Probably the first Octomore that I really like. No youth to make out. It is advisable to give the dram a good sip of water. The whisky tolerates it and thanks it with a distinctly more flavor.
    • Nose
      87 87
Undiluted, he shows himself rather buttoned up and lets you only taste Black Forest ham and smoke.
A small shot of water is already there to lure him out of reserve and bring down from his high 61.3% -Ross. For now he also reveals beautiful spicy notes and smoked pineapple as well as an even more intense greasy note. Acts older than six years.
    • Taste
      88 88
With a splash of water: Still with good power on the tongue. Slightly dry, extremely intense and penetrating smoky note. So fast you can not see how the smoke spreads throughout the mouth. Machine oil, fine-herb, oregano, bay leaves. Espresso beans, dark chocolate. Seaweed.
    • Finish
      88 88
Due to the pervasive smoky note long finish, where you have to honestly say that the roasted pineapple is still to be found. So it may be that it is not just due to the smoke that you can enjoy this whisky for a little while longer.

    S 7
I feel like the peat can stay on palate overnight without issues. It’s complex in the way that diluting the liquid will provide a very different experience. Also, from nose I can’t really recognise the ppm, unlike the previous Octomores.

Good. Happy to have a dram or two but wouldn’t buy a bottle.

    N 26
Touch of damp peat smoke. Juicy fruit covered in ash. It’s way softer on smoke compared to its predecessors. Oak biscuit. A touch of hay. More honey and vanilla did come through after some time.
With drops of water: Citric fruit, more smoke resurfaced but strangely balanced with the elaborated sweetness (barley sugar, fruit). Like the diluted version more.

    P 26
Sweet & spicy & coastal peat. Strong peat and peppery spices kicked in all at once. Then fruit to support. Also, mouthcoating honey.
With water: Way more herbal (oregano and peppermint). Dark roasted coffee beans. Now fruits are diluted on palate.

    F 25
Long, peated finish. Spices are still here but tamed.
With water: Fruit, barley sugar lingering. A whiff of vanilla ice cream

A wonderful Octomore! I love it when the cutie wins the fight against the smoke. 89 points.
    • Nose
Heavy smoke. Phenolic, cold. Mint. Behind it, a sweetness is looming that is becoming more and more dominant. Vanilla. The smoke will dissipate after a while.
    • Taste
The sweetness strikes here now. Bacon with Sweet Chili Sauce. Earthy and cheesy aftertaste. tangerines.
    • Finish
      Very long, fiery and sweet.

  4. SwiftyMcVeigh scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

Impressive octomore that can take some water. You can always explore new nuances. As always, good cask selection, which makes the whisky appear significantly older.
    • Nose
      89 89
Without water only smoked ham and peat smoke.

It opens with a few splashes of water: sweet barbecue smoke. Bright, preserved tropical fruits, sea salt. Lime. malt sweetness and grain. Peat smoke, menthol and sea breeze. coconut oil, vanilla and caramel.
    • Taste
      89 89
With water: Heavy peat smoke and peat lining the mouth. Oily. Barbecue. garden herbs. balsamic vinegar espresso roast aromas. Malt sweetness and coconut oil. Preserved light fruits only in the background.
    • Finish
      88 88
Peat and smoke dominate. In addition, espresso, balsamic vinegar and roasted aromas. Hardly any fruit. Relatively long.

Clear difference to the previous series by Octomore, lack of balance.

  7. Riedel23 scored this whisky 92 points Member Senior

Outstanding and very strong whisky, which one does not believe is capable of this power at first glance. In the food pairing experiment, he was the only one who really went with everything because of his dominance. It is recommended to dilute with a little water.
    • Nose
      90 90
First ham smoke, then some lemon balm. Compared to other Islay heavyweights, he almost seems lighter, fresher.
    • Taste
      94 94
Wow - the first sip immediately dominates the whole mouth, as if it was "burned free". Then of course there is smoke, which appears a bit drier than in the nose. Nutty notes and fresh lemon can be recognized. Now the maritime impression comes through more strongly. With a little water, floral aromas emerge. The sharpness of the first sip is completely gone.
    • Finish
      91 91
Long finish that changes, with the citrus-like fading away first. Then smoke, nut and oak provide an interesting interplay. Towards the end, what remains is something like strong unsweetened espresso.

Nose: creamy, beach pebbles and a beach changing room
Palate: high cocoa chocolate and coffee creams
    Finish: vanilla

C: A very large [small] batch of perfectly decent straight ahead essence of barley juice. Decidedly unmoving, however, [almost] regardless of the £160 price tag.

    • Nose
Farmyard funk, potent smoke, a bludgeoning of peat but with this soft underlying sweetness, vanilla, orange, honeycomb and milk chocolate - fantastic and complex nose.
    • Taste
Great mouthfeel - Peat, dark chocolate covered cherries, some maritime brine notes, honey roasted ham and those coca cola bottle gummy candies - it's also a touch medicinal.
    • Finish
Finish is long, well balanced - the peat lingers

I could smell for days. Good as the taste is, that’s the part I liked the least, as the finish was just shy of the nose, the taste just behind that. I’m hard pressed to think of how this could have been made more appealing to me.
    • Nose
      98 98
Dirty peat. Filthy. Smoke. Meat. Perfect.
    • Taste
      92 92
      Dry, smoky, oaky.
    • Finish
      96 96

    • Nose

Very sour and wet, musty smell. Quite salty. A little off-putting. Water takes down some of the musty, wet nose.
    • Taste
      78 78
Strong peat, sea salt. Wood spices and bitternes. Somewhat sour, a hint of sour apples.
    • Finish
      78 78
      Long finish. Warming and spicy.

  25. Thermidor scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

    Tasted blind.

First I thought this could be a young ex-bourbon Caol Ila or Lagavulin, but after tasting it and catching the farminess on the nose and the taste, I realized it's neither. Blind tasting confirmed what I already thought I knew, that Octomore isn't for me. It's too simple and too loud to win me over.
    • Nose
Simple, heavily peated, with lemons, a bit of salt, and smoke. With a bit of time and a few drops of water, vanilla, matches, and farmyard smells.
    • Taste
Oily, coaly, strong, but simple. Tarry and chalky as well. Water brings some hay and horses.
    • Finish
Oily, simple, and strongly peaty, with hay in the tail.

    • Taste
      87 87
Maritime peat smoke, very spicy, strong onset, lemons, strong light wood, sweet and sour candy, distant tart chocolate

    • Nose

Complex smoky fruit notes. Alcohol is hardly noticeable. Malty sweetness combined with maritime spiciness.
    • Taste
      87 87
Strong smoke explosion with sweet notes of a pineapple with hints of vanilla. In addition peppery seasoning with a salty wood note.
    • Finish
      87 87
Long finish. Here the smoke remains very present, but also the spicy fruit note composition. The slight heat develops into a chilli note with dark chocolate. At the end a rubber note remains in the glass.

Sweet citrus fruits, most likely lemon and pineapple, meet aromatic smoke. Great station wagon. There is also a surprising herbal note that reminds me of thyme. Delicious dram, but I would like to have a .3, too. Finish wanted.

Very earthy nose, thunderstorm of peat, cereals, floral, which gives on the juicy apple, rather golden smith but very ripe, white grapes, vanilla in the background, a hint of spices and herbs, something quite tropical too, in monsoon season, banana leaves, mangroves, very thick mud. A little mineral reflection to finish. Very dense palate, varied flavors ranging from marzipan to mineral water, passing through vanilla and a little lemon. White fruits stand out and give fullness to the peat, finally it's the finish, like a tidal wave, iodine, rock, tar. Wow.

    • Nose
Vanilla and marzipan with beach pebbles, crème brûlée and fudge. Somewhat herbal at times (rosemary), and the charred lemon peel is certainly a nice touch. Nice salinity too, but also notes of wood smoke and seaweed.
    • Taste
The salinity translates to the oily palate. There's a good amount of peat, slightly medicinal even. A touch of rubber and bitter lemon peel, although there's an inherent sweetness that balances things a bit. Golden syrup? Yes, golden syrup.
    • Finish
Lingering peat smoke. A bit one note. Long though.
