Very fruity and creamy but also clean and sharp in a way - really good

Part of an 6 sample Archives tasting I did with friends. Fun fact, we tasted this blindly. All of us agreed quite soon this was a classic Speyside whisky that went well over 20+ years, close to it’s thirties. And we weren’t wrong :)
    • Nose
This is a very nice nose! It’s rather chalky, mineral-like and has lots of flavor. Certainly not an average nose! It gives quite some sweet & dry sensations. Musty, dusty & chalky. Wet stones even maybe. Very well layered and mature. Balance and harmony. Fruits like tangerine and apricot. Spices like laurel and licorice.
    • Taste
Full and fatty arrival on the palate. It offers ripe tropical fruits like banana and pineapple. Also rather strong but I doubt this will handle water very well. Gets more creamy after a while giving a good amount of honey sugared candy, caramel and cream filled chocolate. Somehow it reminds me of Rolo candies.
    • Finish
Very gentle, and silky softness. Beautiful finish this is! Delicate soaked oak like only long used ex whisky cask staves can smell. Lovely! The finish is, in my opinion the most complex part of this dram. I love the way it behaves.

I just cannot imagine this came from Rothes, like stated by Lakerfield.. It’s a completely different profile in my opinion. If it is, this must have been an off cask. As often is the case nowadays: it’s a highly recommendable whisky but way to expensive when I see what is being asked in the market.

A wonderful sample from the WB Archives.
It's as complex and ballanced as you can expect of a whisky this age.

First thing out of the glass is fresh bright lemon citrus.
      Then some vanilla sweetness.
Faintly floral and some fruits on the tropical side.
      Also some soft fudgy stuff.
Apart from the obvious citrus it is a very evenly knit fabric.
Just a few drops of water eases the citric impression and seems to make it even more ballanced.
    • Taste
      93 93
      This is straight on delicious.
Arrives a little dry, but is countered by a nice fruity sweetness.
Lemon is present, but not at the level of the nose.
At around 51% the spice is noticeable but modest, and this is perfectly fine neat.
Added a few drops of water just out of curiosity, and it stays potent, gets a little sweeter, not quiet as dry and if possible even more tasty.
    • Finish
      92 92
This is long, sweet and fruity.
Neat it is a little drying, with a dab of water not so much.
Dark thick fudge, a soft touch of wood at the very end.

Nice full and fruity, loads of tropical fruit in the likes of mango, oranges and vanilla next to some dusty dry chalk. Oily mouthfeel, lingering finish, quite nice! Doesn't feel like a Rothes as others mention tbh.

  5. Lakerfield scored this whisky 89 points Expert Junior

I was told this came from a certain Glen of Rothes.. ;)

Very clean and fruity. Orange peel, cranberry, fig, apple juice, lemon, apricot. Then cacao dusting, butterscotch, sultana, strawberry yoghurt, some roasted aroma's and buttery pastry. Oily and creamy in the mouth with lots of tropical fruits again, jaffa cake, toffee, Belgian praliné, pistacchio, dunnage funk, a little balsamic vinegar
and mint. Finish is medium. Malty and sweet with a minty note. Just like a peppermint at some point.

Based on a sample, thanks again Tijmen.

    Festival tasting format (05.06.2021):
Typical Spaceside, but balanced, dried apricots, fruit.

The 2nd dram in a line-up of 6 Archives whiskies. This one was a blind sample.
    • Nose

When poured in the glass, I immediately reckoned this could be a Glen Elgin of 20+ years. Maybe I wasn't that far off. To me the nose is more fruity than spicy. Fruity in the sense of apples, oranges and mango. Pretty mature and all flavors well integrated.
    • Taste
      88 88
Full body; slightly sharp and mineral. It has this musty and dusty taste like a whisky of the old times. Again very mature.
    • Finish
      89 89
A great finish. Very long and dry in the far end. A real gentlemen's dram!

This sample I tasted in a session with friend. We tasted this one blind and we were quite happy with the quality.

Be aware you don't add much water, this one will drown quick.
    • Nose
      88 88
Fruity, a little fresh, citrus and some ripe tropical fruits. Quite well layered. On the nose it seems quite old and getting to 30+ years.
    • Taste
      89 89
very fruity. Oily coating mouthfeel. Dried mango and pineapple.
    • Finish
      88 88
Long length. a little dusty in the background, but overall sweet and rounded. Gives a full and oily mouthfeel.
