Pretty enjoyable MS. Lots of smoke and smoking products. At the same time, the delicate saltiness with the sea breeze beautifully camouflage the alcohol so that it is practically imperceptible. Excellent price-quality ratio. What more do you need? ! I recommend ????

    smoke shit
The most authentic feeling rubber burnt smell
    A little bit chum?

The taste is light but oh it's pretty good for this price?
It has quite a bit of sweetness and that's it.
Good value for money, but the body is very disappointing

A perfectly balanced and presented naked Caol Ila, it has been a looong time since i simply enjoyed sipping a whisky this much. No off-notes, the sweetness is countered by that typical ci smoke and some light herbal, even medicinal notes. Grilled razor clams, a touch of salt. This does not taste like the minimum 5yo it supposedly is, balanced like a 10yo. So a big thanks to my liquor store owner for recommending this. On the off-chance of sounding a tad dramtic: this dram restored my faith in whisky which had been let’s say ‘tested’ quite a bit of late with all the shameless pricing and flipping shenanigans….so great to find something to just drink and enjoy when you’re in the mood for a peated whisky. Reminds me of Finlaggan when it still had the old livery. Hard to describe: both cleanly simple and delightfully complex at the same time, just give this a chance, i reckon you won’t be disappointed.
    • Nose
Precise, clean, beach bonfire, wet pebbles, dried seaweed, intense phenolics a touch of sweetness.
    • Taste
Follows the nose seamlessly, with some added medicinal herbal touches. Balanced, flavoursome.
    • Finish
      Some savoury saltiness, lingering. Refreshing/minty.

  15. MrDvorak scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

Quite peaky, slighly chemical, heavily peated, vegetal
w/ notes of burnt fresh cut grass, gasoline, plastic, green apples and sour cherry.

    RATING: 86pts – |83 – 86 (B) → Good| — Not a “must”, but a nice-to-have.

    Caol Ila on a budget!
    • Nose
Overwhelmingly, yet surprisingly smoothly smoky and peaty. Some citrus and medicinal notes break through next, followed by a light hint of menthol. Quite mellow for only 5 years at 46 ABV.
    • Taste
Heavy smoke, peat and brine. Plenty of seaweed and medicinal notes in here, which is exactly what I'm looking for when it comes to Islay. Citrus and menthol are there too for a refreshing change of notes. Somehow this is all surprisingly smooth for its young age and ABV. Adding a splash of water seems to be the right choice here though, as it makes the dram feel all the more balanced.
    • Finish
Fairly long and just right for a young peated malt like this. Smoke, peat and brine whirl into citrus and menthol right at the end. Brine lingers for a while.

Final thoughts: I really couldn't find a better option to get into Caol Ila on a budget than this whisky. It pretty much ticks all the boxes when it comes to Islay. I just wish this release was more readily available, as it's really not that easy to get hold of. I might have to hold on to my last bottle for a while.

not bad, drinkable, but too dry for me, obviously looking in the direction of graininess ...

The scent of smoke, wood, baked goods and ripe fruits.
Nice, balanced and drinkable. There is a peppery bitterness and a fruity sweetness.
For the money, this whisky leaves a good impression.

  20. Dramming Dutchman scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Very nice whisky and for only five years of age good flavours, sweet, smoky and salty. For the just 30 euro I think it is "bang for your buck" and when back in the shop I will buy myself an other bottle.

This is just so typical islay. Sweet ashes from begin to end. superbly balanced. Not alcoholic despite only 5 years !!

    Price-ratio-rating 95 Points.

Best Value. A straight sweet smoker. Classic caol ila character. Much better as the original 12 imho. This is an everyday peated dram and a bargaign.

This is a real bang for your buck.

It screams Caol Ila in every way and is well balanced for a 5yo.

Young and simple, but very enjoyable
Salty, with a punch of smoke and dome fruits. Definitely worth it for that price. Also would recommend to new guys who is not into that style of whisky but want try it

    Dirt Cheap
Aceo Ltd is the company that took over Murray McDavid from Mark Reynier at the moment the Bruichladdich Distillery was sold off. They now release this 5 Year Old malt that listens to the name Smoky Scot and is very affordable: not even 40 EUR. They are happy to disclose that it’s a Caol Ila that matured on bourbon casks for five years.
The nose offers both sweet and salty notes with some woodsmoke. Baked apples and some oranges. Seaweeds and caramel. Liquorice. Simple, but very good.
That continiues nicely on the palate. Maritime notes with some tar, seaweeds and dark & sweet fruit. Very lively – well, it is quite young – and clean. The smoke becomes cozily grand. In that regard, it lives up to its name.
The finish may be somewhat short, nevertheless if offers up sweet malt and smoke that lingers, while at the death it gets a nice lift from mint.
A very nice and dirt cheap young Caol Ila. Recommended!

Smoky Scot represents our Islay offering, full of the characteristic peat smoke and medicinal notes for which the island’s whiskies are renowned. Distilled at Caol Ila Distillery on the east coast of the whisky island, it offers a great insight into what Islay has to offer to whisky aficionados.

Matured for five years in traditional oak casks that previously held bourbon, it is a youthful and lively representative of the house style. The clear and vibrant flavours of iodine, seaweed, tar and smoke will transport you to the magical island of Islay. Non chill-filtered for maximum flavour, the whisky comes at 46% ABV.

    Product Specifications:
    Age 5 Years
    Bottle 70 cl
    ABV 46%

    Tasting Notes

The initial notes of tar, old wood, brine and smoke gradually give way to a more subtle, flowery and malty bouquet. There is roasted sunflower seeds, generous maltiness and a hint of menthol.
