- Port Askaig 34 Single Cask 1983. Consumed at a Elixir hosted tasting at Milroy's Soho, Feb 2019. The last dram of the evening. Aroma is bubblegum, vanilla, slight nappy (clean with some talc), big bourbon later, subtle toffee and lemonbalm. Taste is salty, nut skins, oak, salted nuts, very salty and a little boozy, faint esters again suggesting bubblegum, building salt and a raspy booze hit with some waxed citrus. And the reveal - this is a Caol Ila. Well, it seems that Caol Ila still tastes a little young and rough at 34 years old! 3.3/79
- Definitely an interesting sample.
Varnish, noble scents, buckwheat, lime honey, jam, lolipop, candy, confectionery. 92.
but the taste drops to 87, becoming watery.
The aftertaste slightly straightens to 89.
- Aroma 23-24, taste 23, finish 23, balance 23 .. lollipops in cold smoke with pepper, almost portellen)
- Such an impressive and bold palate! Excellent Caol Ila.
Golden fruits (like Port Ellens), grapefruits, passionfruits, mellow, old style peat, smoky and yeasty, a touch of old tools, the nose feels delicate.
Very sour, then becoming dominating sweet and floral, previous herbs, never ending, very huge.
Long, floral, yeast, fermented beancurd, old style peat.
- Port Askaig 34
Is 30+ year Caol Ila ever bad? No really? I’ve never had a bad one. Smoked peaches, tar, ash, marshmallow, lemony, nori sheets, salt, chalk. Powerful. Slightly more astringent finish but amazing again.
