Very expensive Clynelish but it's rare to find an older single cask these days. Exquisitely pure Clynelish waxier than the 1995-1997 bottles. Doubting between 91 and 92 points but I will give the benefit of the doubt for the extra wax :)
    • Nose
Huge wax, paraffin, oil, juicy peaches and a mineral touch. Unmistakably Clynelish
    • Taste
It starts with some citrus (blood orange, grapefruit) before a thick oily waxiness takes over. Then a pinch of salt.
    • Finish
Very long, on waxes, oils and some lemon.

A friend brought back a lineup of samples from the old & rare show London 2020. Amazing to be able to try these drams. These are the results: (keep in mind these are tiny samples, just enough to get an impression)

    1st: 1968 Ardmore 20yr Signatory dumpy (6439) 94pts
    2nd: 1977 Bladnoch 23yr (273) 92pts
    2nd: Dalmore 20yr bottled 1960s (39949) 92pts
    4th: 1992 Clynelish 26yr Hidden Spirits (125978) 90pts
    5th: Ainslie’s 12yr bottled 1960s? (64557) 88pts
    6th: 1974 Ledaig private cask 27yr 87pts
    7th 1974 Caol Ila 21yr Signatory dumpy (38207) 78pts

Serge, god bless him, effectively sent this malt into the abyss with a little WF94... I actually laughed when I tasted it, because it is totally what Serge would love, and not necessarily what everyone else will... the cask may as well have been stainless steel. It is about as pure as you’re likely to find a 26 year old malt. Pure distillate, wort, yeast, crystal clear barley sugars, citrusy to very citrusy. Limes especially, but lemons also. Ideas of green olives. Aloe Vera, transparent smoke, limestone, slate and honeysuckle concentrate, mint oil. On the Clynelish wax scale it’s not a 10/10... I only find it moderately waxy. I say 6/10 waxy. The wax is paraffin. Distillery on display. No, it’s very good, complex and quite interesting, but nerdy. No it’s very nerdy. Any newbie that drops 1K£...I’d love to see their face as they drink it. I like it a lot, but its not necessarily in my flavour wheelhouse.

A current bottling of Clynelish whose reputation went stratospheric due to the review of a certain tall, French blogger with a nice moustache.

Tasted at Old and Rare 2020 in London at Tomislav's booth, which probably was the best booth there in terms of giving drinkers stuff that they want at a price that is reasonable. Thank you.

Very typical waxy, oily Clynelish but the uniqueness here comes from the palate -- wave after wave of vanilla, citrus, and paraffin. Very intense. Yet very concise in its attack. Somewhat fruity, if I remember correctly, though not the tropical kind. Excellent but no way this is worth 1k or more in the marketplace nowadays.

Very good. Beautiful balance and complexity.

With water we are much more mineral in the mouth. On the nose it is more chiseled.
A very good springbank. Pun intended.
    • Nose
      Light peat. Smoke, ash.
      Citrus, lemon.
      Light eucalyptus. Wax, pencil lead.
    • Taste
In the mouth it is very well integrated and balanced.
      Cold ashes always mainly.
      Wax, fruit wrapped in camphor.
      Encaustic strips.
      Light wood and rolled chocolate.
    • Finish
Long and sweet finish on wax, smoke, citrus fruits.

Nice but somewhat restrained nose, great taste, slightly sweetish, powerful, you notice the 50.1%. Alcohol very well integrated. Beautiful long finish that bizzles! Minimal bitter finish. Very good malt, but for € 300 VK no bargain ...
