Scent: vanilla walnut, sea water, citrus and lots of smoke. The smokiness of it was very surprising, I didn't feel any smoky even at islay maltok of a similar age.

Taste: citrus, sea water and lots of smoke. Full of life. Not too complicated, but very lively. With a few drops of water, there is even more citrus, opening up. There's so much smoke after so many years, it's incredible.
Smoky, sea-like citrus flavors. That's all that, but it's master.

25 year old peat from Cadenhead!
    a little bomb.
    • Nose
      peat quite fat, pregnant,
      rather strong, peppery spices
      slightly cooked lemon
      liquorice and caramelized sensation
    • Taste
Important woody and sticky peat, all at the same time
fruits on citrus, cooked, sweetened almost
      a little lavender
a grassy side, seaweed, sea, caramel, licorice are there to give sugar
      Intense smoke with saline return
    • Finish
spices, salt, peat always present, more subtle, the sweet and salty side that remains long!

Very good, and very strong. The balance is there. It's simple, but the pleasure is there.
    • Nose
      Lemon, rhubarb, mirabelle.
Cold ash, medicinal peat, rather oily.
Olive oil. White chocolate. Thyme. Egg white.
      Camphor, eucalyptus.
    • Taste
In the mouth we have above all the peat always present with cold ash.
      It's pretty sturdy.
Citrus fruits, encaustic, white grapes, mirabelle.
The smoke is very present. Black pepper.
    • Finish
Finale on peat, cold ashes, dried apricots, mint.

A sour / lactic / peaty / herbal profile with some unusual associations: cheese Doritos, mixed pickles, smoked bell peppers, old waxed jackets, hemp rope, vapor rubs, camphor, mothballs... The main driving force here is much-reduced peat smoke that has been transubstantiated by time into something indistinctly leathery, farmy, and vaguely... fishy?
Don't get me wrong, it's an absolute blast to nose and I'd probably believe this was even older were I to have it blind, but it's definitely an edgy and complicated malt rather than a crowdpleaser. Almost reminds me of Glen Scotia in some regards.

Oh man. If you ever wondered what happens to the Ten after an additional 15 years of maturation, this is it. Amazingly close and yet so far removed. The DNA is still perfectly palpable, but the depth and mellowness are something else entirely. You wouldn't call this fruity by a long shot, but it's really impressive in its single-minded concentration on the cornerstones of the construct we know as "Ardbeg".
Simultaneously narrow and deep, if that makes sense.
    • Finish

      Majestically deep and layered peatiness.

Not much to say here; better to just grunt approvingly.

Not bad whisky, but quite disappointing for an Ardbeg@25yo.
