Great nose that ticks all the boxes, from the mineralic and "industrial" aspects of Ben Nevis to its fruity side. Here the refill cask shows its strengths. The palate is less thrilling, though, partly because of the low strength, and partly because the washed-out cask has added quite a lot of bitter notes, which certainly aren't for everybody. However, if you like your Ben Nevis austere and uncompromising (and mostly free of sherry notes), this may be just about right.

Re-re-re-refill (no ”contemporary" sherry notes to be found here), but there's nothing wrong with that, at least not with a distillate as characterful and funky as Ben Nevis. Really reminds you of Springbank, only this has more fruit: peach, apricot, good ol' grape. In the absence of strong wood notes, the mineralic and greasy aspects of the spirit come to the fore: on the one hand, wet sand and pebbles, gravel, limestone; on the other, machine oil, coal fumes, bicycle chain grease. On the even-more-idiosyncratic side, there's also some wet wool and/or wet dog fur. So yeah, it's different, to say the least, and definitely not boring.

Soft on entry, develops into a buttery/fatty mouthfeel without becoming strictly oily. The typical BN character is there, but the palate suffers from the low strength as well as some overly pronounced bitter oak.
    • Finish
      86 86
Sour/bitter, on grapefruit and aspirin tablets, with some fizziness. Campari-Soda comes to mind – or the kind of bitterness often displayed by very old grain whiskies drawn from leached casks. A bit forbidding, really.

Ordinary Ben Nevis, but I find him not very complex and, despite 44.4%, surprisingly sharp.
The herb notes dominate, fruit notes are almost completely submerged.
The finish is then a bit ... boring.
    • Nose
      87 87
strong, sweet, fresh Ben-Nevis herbal notes, light fruits, pineapple, soap, nutmeg, white pepper, grated lemon zest, blossom honey, cucumber water
    • Taste
      86 86
Herbs, strong spicy, peppery, spicy, tannins, light fruit sweetness, nutty, espresso, slightly bitter
    • Finish
      85 85
medium long, very slightly bitter, tannins, herbs ... goes in the direction of unsweetened peppermint tea

The start is a bit shy but this Ben Nevis gives a very nice development into chocolate and melon like flavours. Many of you would be able to pick this blindly as a Ben Nevis as it carry's all the characteristics of a good 1996 Ben Nevis. Have had better variations though.

Poured myself a second and third dram, so yess it is quite drinkable... ;-)

Sweet, hay like, nutmeg, chocolate, melons, herbal. Some spices and honey.
    • Taste
      87 87
Chocolate, cappuccino, a bit more body would have been better. Fresh light fruits, grapefruit and melons.
    • Finish
      86 86
Mid to long finish, lacking some depth here but low enough on alcohol to quickly try another sip and saturate your taste buds.
