  1. gallfux did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

Catoctin Creek has many rye notes. The rye notes of the whiskey are intense. By nature, these are so that the bread is still fresh, warm and steaming with dark bark.
The Catoctin Creek has intense and dark rye notes with spices. Pretty round and also relatively set thing. Nothing stands out in the foreground.

First impression / color / viscosity:
A coppery color and a rich oiliness characterize the 100% Rye Whiskey (Catoctin writes the whiskey even without the "e" in front of the "y").

    Aroma / Nose feeling:
Very gentle but with at the same time clearly spicy aromas through the rye and the barrel. A pleasant vanilla fragrance with wonderfully ripe, juicy blood orange flows out of the glass. Accompanied by lime and the typical menthol flavor.
The "gentle" I have to revise something - smell the second, third time then but the slightly higher alcohol strength. It tingles something in the nose, but not unpleasant.
The barrel is very present. You can imagine the individual wood fibers absolutely in his mind's eye. Virgin Oak.
Inevitably, I have to think of ink and ink extinguishers. As well as the cork wall, which from earlier times is still in our cellar.
From the empty glass, the rye is very clear after a while.

    Taste / mouthfeel:
A bite in the wooden stave. At the same time sweet vanilla sauce with caramel and a freshly squeezed orange juice, with some orange peel on the edge of the glass. There is also a very, very intense espresso with ground, dark chocolate.
The seasoning on tap is a perfect opponent to form together a very interesting Rye.
The intense notes of the wood and the tart, spicy aromas of rye combined with the 58% Vol make a whiskey that I would not recommend to beginners. I like that very much.
Some water does not change much in the overall picture. Sure, the whiskey will be a little quieter but in relation to each other, the flavors and the impressions are the same.

    Finish / aftertaste / Length:
A really pleasant, very suitable bitterness takes over the supremacy in the mouth. Bitter lemon with vanilla pod and some ground pepper. Fits for me to the overall picture.
Here in the dessert I would guess that the Rye was not too long in the barrel. But there are no false notes or annoying "youth".
Unfortunately, the finish is not the longest.

An interestingly coordinated Rye, which is lively and therefore not boring. In addition to the typical flavors such as. Vanilla scores this Rye also with certain corners and edges, which positively influence the overall impression.
Nice that this Rye was not so ironed. The perfect counterpart to the Pikesville Rye (51% rye), which is next door to the shelf.
