    Soft, delicate, delicate.

A very good and respectable PE, but I can't help but think this is an example of where the name imposes a few extra "sympathy" points.  Lacks a certain charisma that some of the best PEs can have.

The same cask 220 as the Old Bothwell botling.Port Ellen 26 yo 1983/2009 (54.9%, Old Bothwell for Thosop bvba, Belgium, Cask #220) Five stars Colour: white wine. Nose: this will be quick, it’s just a typical flinty and slightly lemony ‘natural’ Port Ellen, with a wide range of aromas in the background: almonds and walnuts (and other fresh nuts), kippers, oysters, linseed oil, apple peelings, wet rocks, graphite and just a little custard. Ultra-clean, ultra-classy. Moderate tar. With water: gets more organic and more coastal. More seashells, seaweed, iodine… Just wee hints of ‘new plastic’ (brand new Renault ,-)). Mouth (neat): superb attack, sharp like a blade, lemony, Riesling-esque, mildly smoky but very mineral. Doesn’t quite develop any further but that was already more than enough. With water: very good, old style, kippery, smoky and almondy – as it should be, I’d dare to say. Faint earthiness that brings an extra-dimension. Finish: long and extremely coastal. One to quaff on oysters! Comments: very good selection by Mr Luc Timmermans. SGP:367 - 91 points.

Port Ellen 26y 1983, Old Bothwell by Johan on November 30, 2009: Old Bothwell is a young bottler, founded in 1998 and operating from the town of Bothwell. It bottles all kinds of spirits, including Single Cask whisky, but it differs from other independent bottlers by personalizing their bottles for any occasion. In other words, you want your own head on a label, one address. The Port Ellen from 1983 is one of the Port Ellens from their stock, it seems they still have a decent stock. Well, they are not alone, there is still quite a lot of Port Ellen in all kinds of storage places waiting for bottling, Port Ellen is not Brora. Port Ellen 26y 1983/2009, 54.9%, Old Bothwell, cask 220 - Islay - 91/100 Despite a rising cold I smell the very recognizable Port Ellen nose of salt, iodine and seaweed. A beach walk in the winter. Smoke, charcoal and a light wood touch nicely through it. A smoldering campfire on the beach so actually. Then the fruit is set up: gooseberries (the very underappreciated 'cleavers'), but also apple. Nuts, roasted. Complex! The taste is firm and quite greasy with the same elements from the nose (for the jokers among you: no, no snot), butter and lots of peat. I also have herbs (licorice, ginger). Marzipan. Njummie. The aftertaste is long, very long, on sweet peat, salt and spices. A whisky to enjoy on a cold winter evening, if possible on the pier of Ostend. A very nice Port Ellen so and in my opinion better than the two 1982'ers of Old Bothwell that I drank on Spirits in the Sky. Reviews of these two can be found on WhiskyNotes, but if you want to buy one, let it be the 1983. www.onversneden.com
