[March, 2019] A new batch of the 12-years cask strength is a must try, for sure...

...and it is another fine Traditional Scotch Springbank with an interesting and complex profile that is dangerously quaffable. Springbank truly delivers a consistent quality with its cask strength bottlings - so far just one release was sub-standard according to my taste buds. Best bang for your bucks these days...
    • Nose
      89 89
The colour is amber and the nose offers a delicious Springbanky-profile with notes of machine oils, maritime peat and a wet leather jacket. Beside this there are the usual herbal-spicy, waxy, chalky and very shy fruity aromas - the sherry casks somewhat hide in the background but this is fine as it provides more room for the Springbank malt to enfold.
    • Taste
      90 90
The taste is layered on both vanilla-toffee and sherry-induced flavours with some delicious (minor) peaty impressions. All nicely balanced and without any flaw. The toffee-notes grow stronger upon chewing while additional nutty-marzipan and hot-spicy flavours are released. The wooden notes are perfect to provide a backbone but they never dominate - just the way I like it.
    • Finish
      89 89
The dram arrives warming but not much coating on the palate with a minor drying feeling (ashes) that is not distracting. The finish is medium to long and adds some fine chocolatey flavours and more spices. No distracting bitter or drying moment. Water releases more aromas in the nose and smoothes the taste - actually I like this dram both neat and somewhat reduced.

Springbank 12yo Cask Strength Extravaganza: 2022.11.12.

Now that it’s been more than a year since the last release of the last CS12yo I saw it fit to go into my sample cabinet and dig up all the batches I could find. Here is what it resulted in: a gargantuan tasting of 13 different batches. I had to turn to decimal scores to do justice to this session (this is something I haven’t done before, mind you). In Order of my preference:

    Batch #21 (45% Sherry, 25% Bourbon, 25% Burgundy 5% Port) 56.1%
    https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/168596
    87.2 / 86.4 / 85.6
This one is a bit of a confused batch for me, too much is going on at the same time. It has some nice pine resin notes and lots of wet wine cask character. The cask influence takes over distillery character too much for my taste.
    86.4

    Batch #12 (65% Sherry, 35% Bourbon) 54.1%
    https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/77708
    87.4 / 87.2 / 87.3
This batch drinks quite a bit younger than its age. There is a sulphury quality on the nose and a particular earthy smokiness.

    Batch #22 (50% Sherry, 50% Bourbon) 55.4%

Most definitely, a modern style of SB distillate, the funkiness is elevated, and I even find some of the HB bitterness on the finish, I like this style. The spicy, resinous European oak is rather present on the palate.

    https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/105550
    87.8 / 88.2 / 87.4
This one has a good balance of sherry and bourbon, some roastiness, dried fruits, wood smoke, some nuttiness even. The malt comes through cleanly with lots of vanilla and floral notes, there is just a hint of menthol as well.

A more sherry forward batch with intense spiciness and complex boiled or candied fruit notes. Camphor, dirty distillate - farmyard, drying woodiness on the finish.

This has some very nice honied sweetness as well as floral freshness accompanying the rich maltiness and spiciness of the spirit. Fresh and white-oak-forward.

Intense, rich maltiness, vibrant spices and honey. Minerally distillate, earthy smoke in beautiful balance with the fruity, syrupy cask influence.

Very modern green type of American oak influence. A bit sappy, almost too sweet… but the creamy texture and the floral barley character comes through from the spirit, making it a very clean, juicy expression from the distillery. Most definitely dominated by the first-fill white oak.

    https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/138854
    88.6 / 89.4 / 88.4
Smoky, dirty, resinous. Roasted malt and a bit of waxiness from the distillate. Strong honey note, vanilla, ripe fruits, and a touch of sulphur alongside the SB funk.

Heavy body, creamy, malty, spirit driven. Nice depth and sweetness from the reserved sherry influence. The barley comes through clearly, heavy oily texture, farmy, funky aromas. Almost reminiscent of the recent local barleys.

A masterpiece in floral bourbon maturation. Leathery, waxy and dirty, exploding with floral complexity and mineral hay notes. Almost no smoke, but a tiny bit of farminess. Drinks considerably older than 12 years.

Strong, spicy sherry influence, concentrated smoky fruitiness. Earthy vanilla, oily barley and pronounced farmy funk. This is one of the most intense batches and one of the dirtiest. The style of ‘dirty’ sherry casks is reminiscent of the old-school SB-sherry-funk.

Elegant and fruity style of sherry comint through. Classic oloroso aromas, in perfect harmony with the dry and farmyard-y spirit. Spices from the resinous European oak, white pepper nutmeg, vegetal freshness and honied floral notes. Dry maltiness, some plaster, earthy smoke; all enveloped in thick juicy sherry.

Fresh woody and yeasty. Bitter funkiness not unlike HB, and some plaster. Fresh floral honey, some damp hay, dried apples and pears, waxy texture, barley-sweetness. Camphor and sharp spices give more depth.

I liked it a lot, especially the soft and sweet mouthfeel.
    • Nose
Sweet with a hint of smokiness in the background. With a little water it became fruitier, especially apple and grapefruit, plus pastries, honey and leather
    • Taste
menthol, peppermint. Oily, creamy and very soft. Then again grapefruit, raspberries and what really made me happy was an association with chewing gum. But not just any, but "Bazooka" from the 70s, very nice!
    • Finish
Long, warm, mild and ends with a subtle oaky-dry note.

Springbank became victim of a hype. Although they might see that differently themselves. One can one hope they won’t sell their soul to the devil now the big money is calling.
    • Nose
Lovely raw Springbank nose. Compared to other 12 CS batches this one is definitely more into fudgy and buttery flavors. It might be 50-50 but I think the bourbon is more dominant giving loads of yellow sweetness. Yellow fruits, Honey, honey comb, vanilla extract, caramel, licorice. There’s a good whiff of sherried flavors but it’s supporting, not determinative.
    • Taste
Smooth, accessible, tasteful. Some dry notes but not disturbing. It’s good but not out of this world. But that being said, I like the 15yo above these 12 CS anyways. I think this one is a little boring on the palate. Not a lot of surprises here.
    • Finish
Long and mildly peated. Quite some oak as one might expect from Springbank. The craftsmanship. I get smoked veggies and butterscotch.

The 12yo CS is continuously a steady dram but batch after batch I never get that ‘wow factor’. I’ll leave my bottle to the bigger fans in these times of forced rarity ;)

If even Genting 12 is only 85, then the boutique rum is really the next home for spirits lovers.
    • Nose
Sweet, high-alcohol, fatty flavor, similar to rum cocktails. The peat is cold and thin, salty, citrus, yellow fruit, sweet ginger, shells, slightly tar and leather, and there is no longer the complex flavor wheel of the early pure sherry barrels.
    • Taste
Grape, grapefruit and other peels, sea water, bitter shellfish, black chocolate, alcohol is more important than flavor, no peat can be drunk, only a touch of smoke, some of the fat is destroyed by acidity, dust, and nuts.
Good, the fat is fair, slightly sweet, slightly sour, maybe tannins, no astringency, slightly bitter, no spicy, very slightly alcoholic.
    • Finish
Long-lasting, bitter, oak, coconut milk, vanilla, pepper.

    Springbank 12cs 54.8%
Light to moderate smoky sensation, the main note is composed of Jinhua ham, sea salt, tar and other aromas. A little green apple aroma, a little lemon peel, grease, old stained old leather, dirty and individual, mature but unrestrained. 90
The top notes are sweet and sour and delicious, with sea salt, grapefruit pulp, scallion pancakes and some ham meat accentuated, and the wine has a strong sense of fat. The bitterness increases in the middle and late stages, and the dark chocolate flavor begins to become prominent and dominate. The wine has a medium body thickness, a fuller flavor profile, average levels, and weak body stimulation. The tail is too bitter, otherwise it can be considered an excellent wine. 85
It leaves dark chocolate, some woody tannins, and some peppermint irritation. 83
scbp-4462 smells mature and complex, the front part of the taste is rich and comfortable, but it is a pity that the latter part of the flavor collapses under the influence of excessive bitterness.

    1556) Springbank, 12YO, Cask Strength, Batch 18 (2018)
Life come and go, as well whisky, the right one will always stay close to your heart.
    • Nose
N- The usual alive and kicking scents from this 12YO batch releases. Willingly getting the punches on the nose because it is that good. This batch has less sherry compare to Batch 14 and 15 in 2017, so naturally more buttery bourbon dances on the nose. The bandage tapes, the sweet rusty notes, spices and coastal nuances. (92/23)
    • Taste
P- Powerful, hot herb-y peat with creamy sweet and spicy nuts. Buttery coastal and charred notes between the layer of lemon thyme with ricola candy sugar. (91/22)
    • Finish
F- Long, juicy elongated Indian white grapes with chewy tart grape skin, sensational numbing fagara pepper, a szechuan hot pot, perfect stress reliever. (94/23)

N : like eating a briny custard in a farm. Delicious, great sweet-salt balance and just enough weirdness to it : touch of smoke and mud. Nuts too.

M : on point too. Leather, salt, pure chocolate. Not so farmy anymore, just smokey. Texture is lightly on the oily side. I'd like if it had more body.

F : saltiest part, with a short green touch. Menthol-like. Powerful, spicy.

Second batch I try, both great. 8/10

Sample tested. I liked the batch 19 a lot, curious about this.

N : ooh nice, many different things happening there. I recently tasted a batch of Benromach Cask Strength which has a close vibe (dirty peat and cream, custard), but this is much more complex. So : custard, dirt, salt, peach, dry herb, malt. Sharp.

M : touch of spices, oily mouthfeel or even dusty. Leather, sour mash. Definitely sharp and not as rich as the nose imho, less cereals and less creamy, more citric and rubbery notes.

F : a great licorice touch ! Even minty, with pepper. Ashy aftertaste.

Quite a nice trip ! With more body (fresher casks ?) it would have been very very good. Pricewise in the 60-ish € the 12 y-o CS is a no-brainer for me. 7/10 for this batch.

Appearance: Pale gold. Not much darker than the 10. More legs though.

Nose: Brighter, more oak, citrus, pineapple, malt sugar, caramel, vanilla. Heather honey, slight campfire smoke. There is definitely a boozy burn from the high abv. Bit of ginger. Light raisin, maybe less sherried than the 10. Salty notes. Touch of banana.

Palate: Oak, honey, vanilla, spice, cookies, caramel, ginger, cinnamon, orange, pineapple. Very hot booze. Campfire. Just a touch of brine. Full body, coats the palate. Slightly nutty, slight banaaa.

Finish: Alcohol burn, peppery, oaky tannins. Vanilla.

With Water: Needs water, obviously. Mellows it, sweetens it. Brings out the malt complexity.

Overall: Quite wonderful and can take a lot of water.
I do get the feeling that the importer is gauging on prices here (~$150), and I am not sure I would pay that. They do not seem so pricy in North America, for instance.

I find this a very well balanced dram with the extra kick that gives it an edge over the 15. Value (£55) : 9/10
    • Nose
Quite bourbon cask forward with sweet vanilla and burnt caramel along with fresh apples and lemon fizz. A quite salty and mineral quality to it. Some sweet iodine-like peat smoke. A touch of sherry with some plum notes and dark chocolate. Wood shavings. Black pepper heat to it along with some thyme and cloves.
    • Taste
Pastry-like quality to this. Baked apples and pears. Honeyed vanilla and green malt. A touch of salt and iodine. Not as peaty on the palate. Some more of the plum with some lemon peels give it an acidity. Loads of spices here with cloves, cinnamon, black pepper and ginger.
    • Finish
More ginger warmth. Dark cocoa and roasted coffee beans. Still some bitter lemon peels. Loads of oak influence. The peat is more ashy here as well and much more pronounced than on the palate.

Room temperature when drinking: 25 ℃

Viewing Eyes: White wine smells Nose: the sweet fragrance of fresh honeydew melon core, melon green to the smell of grass, a little salty minerals, moderate oily feeling, smelling cold. Ten minutes later, a little smoked bacon appeared, a ray of cigarettes, and then tangerine, tribute, milk 10 to 1 espresso, half-ripe cheese, honey cake covered with pine nuts and almond slices.
Taste Palate: low sweetness, cracked melon and minerality. The scent of honey, citrus and juicy melons brought by the flowers, based on its basic Shanghai salt, minerals continue to advance, the refreshing spring water flowing through the gray rocks, the green leaves of bamboo leaves, the cooling of fresh mint and the fragrance of herbs. Sweet milk emerges at the end, and a low-sugar version of half-cooked cheese. Complex layers, smooth connection, three-dimensional skeleton, full coordination.
Finish: long and full-bodied, smoked bacon, honey sauce char siew, extinguished bonfire, honeydew melon, orange body: Medium, full of fat, rich body, no bitter bottom

Tasted two times, in company, on two different occasions, two drams each time, with a gap of two weeks in between. The outcome was identical on both occasions.

Plankish charcoal oak notes with confectionary on the nose, really shy on the fruit notes. With a thin arrival and a little hot body, the taste very much confirms the impressions of the nose, apart from some red chili pepperish notes. It lacks body, depth, sweetness and complexity. The regular Springbank DNA is subdued.
The short finish offers pepper and plankish charcoal oak and is absolutely no joy.

Drinking this actually kind of upset me everytime.
This is by far the worst batch of the 12yo CS ever, probably the worst Springbank I've had yet.
I remember having had a bottle of the 1991 Bourbon Wood Expression years ago which was a disappointment, but at least it had some drinkability factor due to the absence of off-notes and it's sweetness.
I'm glad I got the opportunity to taste this extensively before considering a buy.
THIS one here is completely unworthy for Springbank, almost a disgrace.

A bourbon cask driven Springbank. Not the regular 12 cs recipe and on the palate this goes in a very different direction from the previous batches.

Notes of fresh grass, caramel, vanilla are most prominent. Floral notes also lingers.

A different but still very good batch from Springbank. A better executed blend of casks as compared to the more recent batch 19 (which is sherry dominated).

Edit: Opened up after uncorked for 2 months. Smoky apple goodness!

Very interesting 12yo Cask Strength, even if the sherry influence is not like in previous batches.

Rather closed, with the Springbank peat smoke, and whiff of grassy, fresh cut lawn. Ginger, vinegar, olive oil. Lemon and lime, always pair well on the nose. Some nice chocolate wafer after a sip, and the coastal notes starts to appear. With a drop of water, fresh oyster, and the coastal notes is opening up, loads of mineral too. Yummy!

Big malty arrival, liquorice sweets, loads of ginger, quite peppery, all comes with that thick and oily texture. Excellent stuff.

Medium long, with almond, lemon, orange peel, and very fresh too. Really loads of lemon.

Some really nice malty pastry notes along with a bit of fruit. I prefer this blend over the typical 12 year old cask strength with more sherry. I miss the old Springbank 100's that were all bourbon casks.

A nice fresh bourbon cask is vastly underrated when it comes to the interplay of springbank with a nice bit of smoke to it. The sherry craze is really unfortunate, although with the 15 year old it works quite well. Then again, the 15 has more smoke than the 10 this time around in the latest batches.

All told, I really do like this latest batch of the 12, along with batch 15, both of which downplay the sherry. 15 has some nice leathery notes that 18 doesn't have, but 18 is worth buying. It's a nice change of pace and I applaud the distillery for releasing it.

If the casks had more fresh bourbon in the percentage, then I would have raised my score to 90. But alas I detect quite a few refills in here. The nose is not as strong as the palate this time around, but that's okay. I have a very keen nose, but sometimes it's nice to focus on taste and not obsessively sniff one's whisky.

As a former critic with some big websites, I'm enjoying less inhaling of scents these days, at least in the evenings, and a nice tumbler instead of my rather anal retentive glencairns and sherry glasses. I've also retired my dropper in favor of a good ole fashioned teaspoon for adding a bit of l'aqua, as needed.

God gave me an incredibly sensitive nose attached to a big Nordic head, but sometimes I just like to give it a break and revel in the FLAVOR of a whisky, and this one has it!

Little baby sips that roll across the tongue like heaven, and then drip down the hatch: black pepper, clotted cream, croissant, honey comb and wax (in the direction of the old Clynelishes), honey dew melon, dried grass, rain collecting in a BBQ along with the ash, a bit of dried lemon peel, and some minerality along with some sea salt that is subtle yet uniting (perhaps from the water used?).

I would encourage MGMT at Springbank distillery to include a few char barrels in its 12 year old one of these years in the near future. A 12 year-old cask strength with some rechar sherry and fresh bourbon would just frickin KILL. It would be so so good and very satisfying.

this is restrained, not magical but rounded and with enough to play with. More easy drinker than bash over the head. Good value for money.
    • Nose
fruity and light, not at all like Springbank, you might think. The sherry, such as it is, is kept in near abeyance as a slight sweet sweatiness
    • Taste
metallic but with a white wine acidity
    • Finish
medium; hot and somewhat dry with quite a lot of tannins

This gets better with oxidization. Now six weeks opened and half full (I like to stay positive) this is excellent! Amazing something this good can still be purchased for under $100cnd.

Glad I stocked up on these. Better than most $300+ bottles out there on shelves today.

The first few sips were weird for the 12CS. If you let the idea flote away it isn't the sherry Springer as usual... It become good en even better!
It seems to me the peaty/maritime style is bigger in this batch. So I like it!
The new day sherry boys won't like this one as good as the 70/30 preview mix.

    Great, as usual, CS release.
    • Nose

Pleasant sweet and sweet aroma, citrus, farmyard theme (classic for Springbank), mineral, not spittoos, marmalade, apples, chalk, rough / skin, orange, sherry notes, smoked malt, light touch of peat, apricot pepper, honey mixture of oriental spices, black currant. The nuances are even more fragile, it's hard to put them together and describe them.

The 12y Cask Strength bottlings of Springbank distillery have always been a bang-for-your-buck standard espression for me with a solid rating of 88-89 points. Unfortunately, this recent batch doesn’t completely live up to my expectations anymore. I like my Springbank 12y CS with more sherry influence. Don’t change a winning formula...

Light but noticeable smoke (smokier than Batch 17). Fresh. Maritime. Lavender. Fresh, not quite ripe cut prunes. Subtle machine oil. The alcohol stings something.

Despite a modified formula: classic 12 CS DNA. Again something different than its predecessors, again very good and not to miss.
    • Nose
      90 90
Salty, maritime and mineral, with dried apricots and raisins at the beginning. The recipe is slightly different than in the previous batches, 50% sherry / 50% bourbon barrels instead of 70/30. This could be felt in the nose in that the scent that escapes from the glass is "lighter" and more airy than with the larger amount of sherry casks in the ripening process. Applesauce, crushed bananas and vanilla pods. Curry powder, thyme, pepper over time. Marzipan bread and the almonds it contains are pushing forward over time. A fresh, but not smooth nose, because the licking stone, the classic mineral provides a pleasant balance and forms corners and edges.
    • Taste
      89 89
Banana purée and red apple, garnished with coarse sea salt, pepper and a peppermint leaf. Cold coffee, toffee sweets and vanilla ice cream. Clearly mineral and salty, marzipan and nougat. No spices except pepper & salt, not later.

Medium to long, now with salt liquorice, red apples, dried orange peel, marzipan and dark chocolate.
