    Part of a Japanese lineup

Sad state of affairs these days in Japan. It’s like the whole country is Macallan. By this i mean demand and speculation is so outrageous, that pricing well exceeds quality. It’s young, refined and without any major flaw, but without character.

Edit: Was given blind and Gave it an 85. I do feel if you take the bias and hype away, Japan does know what they are doing. So my first review shows that it’s easy to be jaded and score a malt poorly based on bias alone. It’s not their fault about prices etc. It’s a nice and balanced malt, that while young, is without any flaw. At the right price it’s a good pickup. I’ll up my score to the blind review because it’s important to take away the bias and score it as it is.

    700ml bottle for ¥4100 @ Liquor Mt.

Appearance: Pale, straw gold, maybe a bit darker than that, but not much.

Nose: Caramel, honey, light smoke, vanilla, more smoke, touch of iodine, oak, touch of bacon, bit of apple and even less of Asian pear.

Palate: Smoke bursts out at first, not huge but in the forefront, then honey, caramel, vanilla, lemon, apple. Peat is very low in iodine and more like a rauchbier.

Finish: Ashy smoke, honey, vanilla. Smooth and mild.

With Water: Nose becomes a bit boring, mild, like a fire put out by water. Flavor is sweeter, smoother, more honey and toffee,

Overall: At first, I didn’t like this, but now I do. Yes, it is pricy for an NAS, but it still is quite lovely. The peat blends so nicely with the honey and caramel and vanilla flavors. Seems like Scotch to me, more than “Japanese” per se, but extremely well balanced, and with very little burn. Smoke is more like a German rauchbier than a Laphroig.

Fruity aromas permeate space around the glass. Peaches, tangerines, apples, very ripe kiwi, then some nice flowery notes on the edges, honey, clean crisp fruity flavor follows, nice sharp citrus with just enough oiliness to coat and linger. Very sippable enjoyable whisky.
