  1. dRambo scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

looks thinner and less refined than its predecessor on me - both complexity and the depth of the flavors is rather superficial - much more complex than the 12er but the distance to the 18s is also very large
    • Nose
      84 84
slightly dusty musty dried dates, orange oil and orange juice, later rather bitter orange marmalade - sweeter but also more bitter substances, laurel, dried figs, a lot of mint, a little camillan

after the first sip also very clear plums, with a lot of time a fine fruity acid, with caramel, honey
    • Taste
      83 83
Leather, dried dats and figs - which are a bit woody, herbal so come here. Pepper, chili, ginger, very sweet, a hint of plum, clearly orange, some tobacco and a delicate bitterness that reminds me of grape seeds and stalks - it has something "dirty" leathery in itself
    • Finish
      83 83
RumtraubenChocolate, orange, slightly nutty, plum, rather short

Very Aromatic, Sweet dry fruits with some cinnamon-like oaky flavor.
    • Nose
      88 88
The first nose is bourbon-like solutions, then turn into malty sugar cream sugar, banana peel, and mango peel. Give it time, it shows more creamy sweetness, cinnamon bark, and a hint of burnt stew in the background. Very pleasant after the first nose.
    • Taste
      86 86
Thick mouthfeel, Plenty enough power, oily, dates, and figs. Some oxdi-cherry. More dark chocolate shows up in the mid-turn, followed by nuts like peanuts and hazelnuts.
    • Finish
      86 86
Mid-long finish, creamy hazelnuts, some oak with dryness, white pepper,

For my [modestly-enthusiastic-about-whisky] friend, I order the Glendronach 15yo Revival, still a cracker – around the 86-87 mark – and still fairly priced even in these more cynical times.

    Glendronach 15 YO Revival

    Category: Single Malt
Manufacturer and bottler: The Glendronach Distillery (Brown - Forman)
    Region: Highlands
    Fortress: 46%
    Volume: 700 ml
    Bottling date: 06/22/2020
Barrel type: Pedro Ximénez & Oloroso Sherry Casks
    Min. aging: 15 years
    Filtration: none
    Dye: no

Nose. Brown raisins, orange liqueur, dates, mint chocolate, cocktail cherries, dark honey, dried blackberries, plum jam, lingonberry jam, hazelnut cookies, melted butter, lacquered wood, vanilla, ginger. At first closed, not intense and harsh, the fragrance explodes over time with a richness of shades and undertones.

Taste. Concentrated very sweet taste of sugar molasses and fruit syrup made from cherries, plums, lingonberries, blackberries, black gooseberries, dried fruits (dates, raisins and dried apricots), dark chocolate with orange marmalade inside, poured on top with melted butter toffee and sprinkled with cookies and hazelnuts and only with a small mint and ginger refreshing bitterness, which is why it is not perceived as cloying. A powerful complex taste, but at the same time it is not perceived as something transcendent - it is drunk quite easily.

Aftertaste. Continuous. Fresh. The sweetness of dried apricots, the dryness of hazelnuts, mint chill and ginger continue to "play".

Outcome. Cool whisky, a bright “sherry bomb”, the golden mean between softness of drinking and complexity of execution, quite sweet, so in the warm season it may not be perceived as well as in winter, although it will be just right for those with a sweet tooth.

    Rating: 87 out of 100.

    • Taste

Spicy with cinnamon, noodle nut, pepper and ginger.
I also get peach apricot, orange zest and milk chocolate.
    • Finish

The finish is fairly short. I still get oranges, but otherwise this part is a bit too flat.

It starts very well, then it gets a bit less, but certainly not bad.

    incense
It was good because the caramel roasted beans, cocoa, and the scent were quite straight.
This is the only thing I'm used to..? It was the scent I wanted. It reminded me of Dronek.
    I don't like the raisin-like scent.
    taste
    Dry and astringent.. Olorosso Sherry?
I can feel the acidity, but it feels like the oldest aged whisky I've had today.

Enjoyable. Volatile. Full. Clear sherry notes. Probably closer to Oloroso, but you can also feel the PX influence. A bit perfumy. Pretty sweet. Traces of honey. Fruit. Ripe, red. Maybe a little black. Guilty sweetness. The second time, some chocolate.
    • Taste

Typical sherry cask effect. There is some spice. Even a lot. Pepper. Red fruit. Oloroso sherry aromas. Drier than on the nose. There is also a bit of oak wood. Yeast. Light nut jute.

Classic Glendronach nose: juicy, fruity and nutty with dried apricots and figs, almost exactly between 12 and 18.

Still fruity and slightly acidic in the mouth, not quite as intense and full as the 18 but still with a slight spiciness.

The finish is full and intense, very juicy and tasty. Plus some white pepper and a little more oak than the 12 but without the chocolate flavors of the 18.
    Length: 5/10

Overall, a logical intermediate step in the core range without being able to trigger the enthusiasm of the 18er.

    Note 1-

    Glendronach 15 Revival 46%.

Sample bottled at some time prior to Dec 2018, consumed early 2019.

    Very dark colour.

Aroma is quite spiritous. Softest sherry wood character. Muted and slightly estery. Lots of estery fruity spirit (and smells younger than 15 years) but also very sherry.

Taste is salty and quite sherried. Red fruits are followed up with restrained balanced bitterness and suggestions of smoke.

Quite nice but my expectation level was higher given the reviews I had read. 3.45/82

Now and then you get the feeling that something newfangled sweetness (American white oak / Bourbon casks) has been spruced up with newfangled, fresh sherry casks. But all in all, the whining is at a high level. The whisky is just really delicious. And the good old (European oak) barrels from the good old days that you remember are no longer available in the required number. All in all, it's really delicious whisky either way. More of that!

  35. LordBellamy scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

with water: it becomes significantly fruity, all orange notes are evident, but the oak spice also comes to the fore I would leave out the water

Conclusion: nice thing, even if clearly different from the old revival. You can tell it has the new barrel combination with Olo + PX, which makes it sweeter, but not too sweet. The differences are so great that I can't say which one I like better, because you can't directly compare the two.
    • Nose
A clear mix of Oloroso and PX notes, in addition to the raisin, hazelnut and chocolate notes, the sweet grape notes of the PX also come into their own, caramel, but slightly burnt, deep spice of the oak (nutmeg and clove, also a little cinnamon), very subtle too some sulfur, the alcohol is well integrated
    • Taste
velvety, full start, nice creaminess, sherry, caramel, plum, sweet grape, oak
    • Finish
nice sweetness, but not too sweet, almond aroma, toffee, raisins, grape must and chocolate, then the spice of the oak barrels without getting too bitter

A good whisky for lovers of the distillery. It is neither dry like its predecessor, nor greedy like an old Px, this new version loses one point but remains completely drinkable.
In comparison with the previous version, the addition of the Px barrels makes it lose a little of its identity by bringing it closer to the profile of the 18yo Allardice. In the end, it is therefore more its positioning in the range that questions me than its specific qualities. The value for money remains good at a time when prices are soaring.

EDIT, with one year of ventilation, the influence of the oloroso increases and it becomes more homogeneous.

A full on sherried nose that is on the meaty side which hides the dark fruit to some extent but you know they are there hiding in the background.
The palate is on on the sweet side with stewed plum, blackberry and red apples with a nice touch of spice but a metallic note creeps in which loses it a few marks.
As you go on a decent toffee note emerges and the spice increases so that probably balances things out with the metallic note I mentioned earlier.
It starts behaving like a fat on the palate blends with the sweetness increasing after a few minutes.
This 2018 offering is still a quality malt but not a patch and the early batches.

Pure sherry expressed in an avalanche of fruits, raisins, fig, almonds, light slightly burnt caramel, pears in melted chocolate, woody leather, elastic, cereals, pineapple in syrup, all very nuanced. Good mouthfeel just as fruity, plum and grapes, fresh apple cut into quarters, prune juice, a touch of mint, beefy and long finish, on earth and a stick of liquorice. Cherries amarena in retro-olfaction.

Well, I like it. Once you step over the "Revival" bit in its name and just focus on what's in the bottle it's not bad and doesn't hurt the pocket book too bad either. Good fruit, sugary, cinnamon, PX dominant though Oloroso makes an appearance on the palette with some bitter, slightly nutty notes. It's sort of like the Batch 7, but where that one gets a bit "grapey", the 15 Revival manages to hold it all together in what is a rather good sherried dram.

  54. Ostap scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

Unlike the old version, this whisky lacks balance. However, the whisky is quite bright and pleasant. I do not divide the solid negativity, this is not a new heel bad, and the old one was a masterpiece.

Well sherried without becoming too dry or tannic. Juicey and supple with more than enough to fall in love with.
    • Nose
Soggy fruitcake, it's a christmas pudding which is a little heavy on the brandy. Some non sherry-like notes of flapjacks and Scottish shortbread coming through
    • Taste
Oranges on arrival, spiced orange with a sweet and sour element. Plenty of nutmeg and ginger root, lively and exciting. Some leather notes with an earthy element not far behind.
Oily palate coating the tongue and mouth.
    • Finish
Quite oaky for 15, older sherry casks bringing tannings and dried spice.

A quick comparison with my open large bottle Allardice (WID: 95950).

In terms of color, the Allardice is already a good deal darker.

In the nose, the new revival is much fresher and lighter than the Allardice. The 18's has a good deal of nut, oak and coffee notes with dark sherry in the nose. The 15er goes there rather in the fruity direction and looks relatively fresh.
In the mouth, the impression continues. The revival is less bulky and lighter than the Allardice. Also, the departure of the 15er does not last as long as the 18er, since the oak is much less present.

All in all a very good whisky, but for me it's more about easy drinking. Almost too pleasing for me.
So I'm not sad that I did not participate in the run for the bottles. Can live quite well even without a big bottle.

    Just disapointing imo

Big sherried influence, but also sharp, somewhat bitter and surprisingly younger tasting. A ways off the old 15yo and one would be much better served spending extra and grabbing the current 18yo.

Very nice sherry malt. Drinks well. Not as charged as the older brothers. I like that a lot.
Much sweet much fruit. Fits ....
    • Nose
      83 83
Lots of sweet, slightly mellow wood, cherries, more cherries / plums compote.
Some oranges and slight bitterness noticeable. Slightly nuttier ...
    • Taste
      85 85
First, the sweetness and moisture of the cherries and plums to honey sweetness. Light spicy, ginger / pepper, chocolaty towards the end
    • Finish
      81 81
Short, honey sweet, some ginger sharpness, oak comes through,
      Rather unspectacular

  62. Totoro scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

A different beast altogether from its earlier incarnation, and one that by all rights should have gone by another name. A revival of the Revival? Not really. A good contemporary sherried whisky with an age statement and a characterful distillate? Certainly.
    • Nose
      87 87
PX and American oak up front, along with a slight sense of heat (or, if you're more positively inclined, warmth) and some rather fresh-seeming wood - and the spices that brings: ginger, nutmeg, some soft cinnamon.
So yeah: raisins, dates, chewy toffee, and all that, but also a real sense of the distillate coming through, perhaps more so than in the older version. Less integrated, obviously younger, more spirit-driven, more shaped by quercus alba. Of course all that was to be expected, and it's a shame that pretty much all of us who taste and discuss this feel they have to point out differences to the "original", simply because the owners apparently believed they had to piggyback on that bottling's stellar reputation. If this had been brought out under a different name, its own merits would've been more apparent. It's pleasant and substantial, after all, with some hefty sherry and meaty, weighty distillate playing in tandem. Also, with some time in the glass, some lovely savory umami notes appear, with some liquorice, and somewhat surprisingly - a floral / citric aspect. Definitely nothing to sneer at, but of course it pales in comparison with its predecessor. Edit: gets better and better after some time in the open bottle; I've upped the score by two points.
    • Taste
      86 86
As with the nose, a lot of PX and youthful American oak at first, with a peppery, gingery bite to it. Then more sweetness and red fruits come in, followed by leather, soy sauce, charcoal, and pretty pronounced wood spices. As Serge would say: very modern. It's good though, and as with the CS versions, I like that we can actually get more of an impression of the distillery character when the (fresh / first-fill) sherry is less pronounced. Nothing to sit and marvel at, but a very good drinker around the 50-60 € mark.
    • Finish
      84 84
Warming for sure, with sweet, pickled ginger, crema di balsamico, and sticky-sweet dried dates. Some residual heat. Pleasant, but no real charm of its own. It's the palate on repeat, pretty much.

Although this new revival is no where near as rich as the original it is still an excellent dram and much better than the review here indicate. If you can get this for $90 or less it is worth it. Not up to the level of the 18 but the 18 is not 50 bucks better either.
Better than glengoyne 18 for me.
    • Nose
      Fruits, plums, raisins, nuts. Excellent.
    • Taste
Caramel, dark fruits. Feels like someone took the old revival and brought it down to 43%
    • Finish
The finish is short compared to the old revival and it lacks that deep sherry punch at the end that the old bottle and parliament have.

  64. asmazda scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

Compared this side-by-side to my 2013 bottling... new version is much lighter, much thinner, much sweeter, and far inferior. Aside from that, the fact that they changed the recipe but kept the name is deceitful of Glendronach's new management.

I'm not a GD expert, but I already strongly remember that I liked the old 15er much better, for me even with the strongest under 20er OA was. This one lacks some grounding, but also depth.
    • Nose
Phew, I do not like the modern sherry, chestnut, nuts, rye bread, oregano, nut chocolate, nutmeg, musty dates, cinnamon, lavender, clove, rather dry and even more bitter, have the old much fruity in memory
    • Taste
Clove, cherry compote with bitter seeds, plums with seeds as well, chestnut, very modern also here, lovage therefore unfortunately also of the lot, pepper black pepper, forest honey, pine nuts, ginger, some tobacco
    • Finish
Still bitter, the nuts come back from the nose, chocolate chips, ginger, short to medium long

Slightly weaker than the old version, yes, but no disappointment.
The typical distilling character is very intense especially in the nose and has positively influenced my application. Between 50 € and 60 € is the PLV in order.
    • Nose

Sour sherry aromas, balsamic vinegar, first red fruits, then figs, milk chocolate, barrel wort, dusty wood chips, later again blackberries, oranges and citrus fruits.
    • Taste
      88 88
Oranges, dark fruity notes, chocolate, with a creamy texture, the malt later frees honey and caramel, it also has a slightly spicy and woody, but also somewhat alcoholic.

Nice sweet and fruity nose on the nose, quickly breaking down, disappointing in the mouth and finish - reminiscent of the newer 12er, only a little sweeter. The malt almost decays when looking into ... nothing.

This Whisky is okay concerning its price-Performance-ratio! (Well, at least if you can get one for roundabout 55 Euro) Seeing so many people chasing this newest expression the Glendronach marketing did a good Job naming this one Revival! For me as a fan of the former Billy Walker Glendronach Style this is a slap in the face! This stuff is just so much worse than the old Revival and the new Style is kinda generic in my book as well!

So, the controversial conclusion… The new Revival certainly has big shoes to fill and as a standalone 15 year-old whisky it is a great product, does it meet the high bar of the older brother – sadly not. This is not necessarily a bad thing; however, nostalgia kicks-in and you can’t help but compare the older, richer discontinued version to the newer, sweeter version.

Honestly, Glendronach should have been smarter and branded the new release differently, rather than rehash the Revival name as it’s a solid core range product in its own right. Sometimes it just makes more sense to have a clean break from the old and make way for the new.

We’re certainly not disappointed with the new 15 Revival as we enjoyed this release for what it is. Colour wise, it’s lighter in appearance and slightly spirity on the nose, less body and richness and less heavy on the sherry. We have to keep in mind that the older Revival was matured solely in Oloroso casks and rumoured to be considerably older than the new, true 15 year-old, vatted Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso release.

    • Nose
Instant sherry, dried fruits such as; raisins, dates and prunes with freshly made butter toffee. Dark chocolate, barley, orange, polish and macadamia nuts. After 10 minutes in the glass there’s a subtle hint of coconut and honey appearing with some salted caramel.
    • Taste
Initially sweet with a velvety texture, a mixture of red and dark fruits with the butter toffee appearing from the nose. Honied bread, slightly salted with hints of cracked black pepper, cinnamon and cloves. More dark chocolate and macadamia nuts, oak and a peppery cedar wood note appearing before the finish.
