It's a complex one. Nice layers reveal themselves in time. The nose is quite different from the taste. It's quite a nice surprise, this one.
    • Nose
A little sweet like raisins. There's also something earthy, grassy. In the back a bit of menthol and some salt.
    • Taste
At first it's sweet and salty. Wow! Again those raisins. Then the dark chocolate and malt revealed themselves. Later on I tasted some cranberries. And it's oily and meaty.
    • Finish
Dark chocolate is dominant. Again the sweetness and saltiness is there. It's medium.

    Beautiful single cask
The imprint left by the previous resident is obvious
Even if the distillery markers remain intact, the sherry brings a lot of complexity without being overpowering.
The icing on the cake is this slightly perceptible smoke on the nose but very present in a rather consistent finish. Obviously, the whisky having stayed in this cask before welcoming this Ben Nevis was not only peaty but very maritime (Talisker?)
The result is really convincing. Complexity, balance, everything is there
    Simply great

In its own way almost a typical Ben Nevis from the sherry cask. It has some hearty and also dirty notes in it that distinguish it from other malts. So I like it.
    • Nose
Sulfured Raisins. Tart plum jam. Dirty and partly musty notes. Forest and wine cellar come to mind. Also meaty notes. Let me say roast wild boar and cranberries to go with it. Bay leaf. Rotten orange. Aromatic oak, partly reminiscent of smoke. Again and again fresh tones. Something like eucalyptus.
    • Taste
forest honey. Dark caramel. blackberries. Again those meaty notes. Additionally roasted aromas. Plus some nougat. This will now become chocolate with orange chunks. Chewing tobacco. Coffee.
    • Finish
Roasted Nuts. Somewhat salty too. dried meat. Black tea.

    Sample tasting:

Nose: blackberries and a mix of apples and pears, in the background an overripe, almost rotten lemon / lime plus lots of liquorice, cinnamon, dark chocolate and Erdkellermuff. The sherry is very discreet in the background.

On the palate, the oak sets in very early and aggressively without water and makes the whole thing very inharmonious for me. With water, the other aromas from the nose can develop much better.

The blackberry turns into a dark cherry over time.
In the finish, the focus is again on the oak seasoning, which really lasts for a long time.

Very good but also not a wow whisky, for me the fruity and malty aromas that could round off the oak better are simply missing. (Potential 90+)

A great example of a sherried Ben Nevis. Funny how my experience is different from previous
    • Nose
A quite friendly nose that’s not typical for a Nevis in my opinion. Yes there is grapefruit, but no there is not that typical dirty earthy side I often get in a Ben Nevis. There is also a certain freshness inhere which I would describe as mint leaf and an oaky side I would describe as tree bark. With a little hand warmth more sweet sherry influence reveals, gives warm raspberry and fresh yellow sultana’s. With time more leather and cigar tobacco flavors are getting in.
    • Taste
On the palate the body is incredibly thick and creamy! Lovely full and rich flavored. There is again some dry freshness like in mint leafs but also gives a bite. Again I get hints of tree bark. Not often that I get this so I like that a lot! Again there is a bittersweet grapefruit like fruitiness as well. Maybe even more like pomelo. Fresh leather is there after 30 minutes.
    • Finish
The finish is not as long and active as I expected but it is very pleasant. The finish is enormously gentle and well balanced. The wood influence is certainly not dominating at all. The freshness is more like eucalyptus now. The whole ends a little dry. Tobacco leaf is coming through after time.

Take your time with this one and let it breath. It will be rewarded!

Very good if you have it straight up; excellent when you add a few drops of water.
What I really enjoy about this bottling is the cask influence: the oak perfectly supports the heavy yet fruity character of the distillate, complementing but never blanketing it.
    • Nose
Surprisingly fruity! And is that a whiff of peat I'm getting behind the first onrush of peaches, strawberries, and melon? Ah, Ben Nevis, you never cease to surprise us. The sherry influence is pleasingly restrained, coming to the fore mainly as roasted and nutty aromas: ground Arabica beans, cashew and hazelnut, with a dollop of molten dark chocolate. More time in the glass yields additional warm wood notes, with lovely associations of christmas spices, essential oils, woodsap, and resin. At first I thought this smelled younger, more like an 18-year-old, but as time went on, the character shifted, got darker and spicier, and in the end, this 20 y.o. might as well have been a 23-year-old.
    • Taste
Chocolate in the lead, with a whole array of nutty flavors following behind it: hazelnut praline, roasted cashews and almonds, caramelized peanuts... Really good. The oak spice keeps building up alongside those flavors, and peaks in the last third of the development, pretty much at the same moment when the fruits from the nose make a comeback: peach, strawberry, melon. A veritable fruit salad, slathered in chocolate, with a touch of woodsmoke.
    • Finish
Oily, greasy, pleasantly industrial or workshop-like in that typical BN style, with dark chocolate truffles, red berries, and a small but unmistakable amount of peat smoke.
Water unleashes the fruits in the finish and lifts this one above the 90-point-mark.

This whisky already became cloudy inside the bottle. Seems this dram hasn’t seen any or had just very, very light filtration. That’s promising! :) Elixer Distillers was a bit of an underestimated bottler in my book, but lately I’ve had some very good bottlings so they really climbed the stairs here.
    • Nose
Well this is why Ben Nevis goes so well on sherry casks. This one gives a beautiful earthy profile combined with deep sherried hints of dried red fruits, yellow sultana’s, a big amount of spices and dried herbs. Combined with freshness of peppermint and a layer of antique oak furniture this makes a terrific nose!
    • Taste
The palate is smooth, rich and oily. Creamy charcoal like flavors, I didn’t know that was a thing before this. Also some bbq beef flavors join the palate and 4 season peppermix as well. This dram is a great pleasure for the taste buds!
    • Finish
The finish fills the mouth with rich smokey flavors, smoked paprika powder, cigarboxes, tobacco and bbqed veggies. Just beautiful! The flavor that remains is giving wood polish allover the place!

This one presented itself as a mature Glendronach, and switched to something Clynelish alike and Springbank-y within a few minutes. All in all another very characteristic Nevis, which was ever evolving with every sip I took. And that was only 3CL.. Some oaky bitterness keeps me from scoring higher.

    Based on a sample.
    • Nose
Lots of wood, a shy sherry influence, salty marine air and 'dark' fruit. We've got another chameleon here.
Dried apricot, orange zest, fig, cranberry, citrus
sour cream, caramel, licorice, cheap peach yoghurt,
almond, walnut, espresso, cristallized honey, oak tannin,
cheese, chalk and a little smoke.
      Some
    • Taste
No surprises here, although it has more of that creaminess from other 96'ers. Needs some time to open up as it's shy at first. Apricot, apple, fig, plum, blood orange, citrus zest, dark chocolate, salted caramel, sultana, demerara sugar, leather, tobacco, honey, vanilla, pepper, and balsamic vinegar.
    • Finish
Medium to long in length. Creamy malt, salted caramel, apricot and some dry oak.

Very beautiful whisky, fruity, sweet, strong, versatile and balanced. Really a very enjoyable one.
    • Nose
Very fruity, prunes, raisins, honey, citrus, chocolate as well, and even a hint of tobacco. And grassy. Very full 'nose'
    • Taste
Full taste, tingling, strong. Some orange, prunes and raisins, and later on a lot of chocolate
    • Finish
Still a very full body, but less pepper now. Sweety and fruity, berries, a bit candy-like. Still some chocolate. Long finish.

A very nutty-intensive sherry malt without any sulfur, with pleasant spice and fine wood smoke. The nutty Oloroso notes, paired with the oak smoke and the light and dark fruit potpurri, are extremely pleasant. Appear more sweet on the nose than on the palate and on the finish, dominated by the earthy-woody notes. A very a malt.
    • Nose
      92 92
Wood smoke, nut, sherry, some blackberries, some damp forest soil. A few sweeter flavors ("gums"), even slightly light grapes and also slightly grassy. Only very soft alcohol.
    • Taste
      92 92
Sherry, fine nut, again wood smoke. In the course of intense wax. The fruitiness is a little less, the nut dominates. In the last tests were more sweet-bright fruits to taste, as well as some cinnamon. Another nice oak, some pepper; The almost 55% are never disturbing and provide pleasant fresh power. Fine mixture.
    • Finish
      91 91
Medium to long finish. The slightly smoky wood aromas dominate, followed by sweet freshness between light and dark fruit, some wax.

Although the color indicates a "full sherry drone", this Ben Nevis is dominated more by dark and spicy wood notes in my opinion. The expected fruitiness shows almost exclusively in the nose, in taste and in the end dominate spicy and dark wood elements with a dominant smoky note. Spices and fresh mint provide variety, the mouthfeel is incredibly creamy and buttery. An interesting bottling, different than expected, but delicious and very full of character.

    23/22/22/22 (89P)
    • Nose
Dark copper shimmers with an orange sheen in the Premium Snifter while oily "legs" pull their long laps on the glass wall. At the first nosing, the alcohol immediately shows its voluminous and powerful side, after which a dominant spicy note in combination with a fresh fruit note stand out. Mirabelles and oranges play together, fresh peppermint and caramelized sugar combine to create a sweet and refreshing note. Minimal smoky notes dissolve from a touch of milk chocolate, the freshness increases noticeably. Spicy and reminiscent of a brine, the nose gets tart, again minimal smoky notes and a hint of burned wood to advantage. In the background is still this sweet and fresh blend of sugar, yellow fruits, mint, spices and herbs.
    • Taste
Creamy and spicy, the Ben Nevis taps on the tongue. Smoke aromas and spicy wood tones flow through the palate, a pinch of white pepper spreads its pleasant sharpness and makes pearls dance on the tongue. The salivation is massively stimulated while caramelized sugar mixes with yellow fruits, velvety apricots and fresh oranges. Smoke flavors and minimally burned wood tones follow again, the sharpness on the tip of the tongue increases, as does the salivation. Subtle sharpness tingles between the lips, roasted hazelnuts end in old walnut flavor. The mouthfeel becomes noticeably tart and darker, as well as creamier and characterized by roasted nut flavors. Peppermint draws refreshing through the palate, juicy oranges stick to the tongue, abrasion of grapefruit and orange peel ends in creamy and dark wood tones. A touch of meadow herbs and a dried spice mixture stick to the palate, the taste goes creamy with hints of smoke and burnt wood in the finish.
    • Finish
Creamy dark wood tones stick to the palate, zest of orange blend with roasted hazelnuts, a touch of Moroccan mint ends in meadow herbs and creamy wood elements. Butter flakes melt on the tongue, the spicy wood tones blur, slowly, the finish sounds and leaves a creamy mouthfeel with a touch of burnt wood.
