A hogshead with, what I think, a decent amount of ex-sherry staves or maybe even a complete 2nd fill sherry HH? Anyhow this is a recommendable dram. Taste it if you get the chance!
    • Nose
Somewhat closed. Needs water to open up. Sweet apples, fudge, raisins, red fruits, honey and butterscotch. Full and sweet nose. This is a (very) good nose. Also quite some spices and nuttiness. On one hand this could have been a 2nd fill sherry HH, (quite some red fruit but not like 1st fill in your face loads, quite some spices but not the amount of refill casks). it’s somewhere in between. On the other there is also quite some typical bourbon influences involved but this could be the responsibility of the American oak.
    • Taste
Nicely rounded. Alcohol quite present but not to much. Rather thick and oily. Sweet and sour. Nuttiness and sweet red fruits like in strawberry. Also I get apricot and quite some spices.
    • Finish
Long and friendly. Sweet and a tad dry. Somewhere in the middle there is a creamy layer. after that the grand finale with dry oak tannines, sweet red fruit and a shipload of honey.

    900th Cask

In the run up to the 1000th (!) casks bottled by this Dutch bottler, van Wees seeks out special casks to release in nice wooden chests. This is their 900th cask: a Glen Grant from 1997 at cask strength.

On the one hand the nose is candy-like on oranges and other citrus fruit with a truckload of honey and some vanilla, but on the other shows some nice earthy notes with soft spices that give it depth and make this nose an absolute pleasure. Wine-gums and gummi bears are alternated with wood shavings and grilled pineapple.

On the palate it all starts very sweet (honey, vanilla, wine-gums), but soon a lovely bitterness emerges. Both grapefruit and grape pith and some tannins. The spices give it a warm character. Think liquorice, quinine and cardamom. While the nose promised a soft Speysider, it offers a sturdy fellow on the palate. Midpalate some yellow and white fruit emerge to make it absolutely clear that this is a little fruit bomb.

The finish is tremendously long, spicy warm and fruity sweet.

Now this is a single cask with which you can impress. Which van Wees did. Recommended. Thanks, Benny.

Ever had a bad Glen Grant? Neither is this! Good one and a good representative for the 900th cask!

What a good nose this is! Vanilla, honey and some citrus. Very well matured! This is one that needs to be savoured. Fresh grass and some smell of summer rain in the background.

Sweet, oily and thick mouthfeel. Very rounded whisky. loads of sweetness, honey, fruit, little hint of lemon.

Long length. Leaves a nice oily coating in the mouth. First a little bitter, but quickly over to the sweetness, some oak influence and a burst of vanilla.

Very solid Glen Grant. A fresh, tropical fruitbom with pineapple, oranges and citrusses paired with honey and wine-gummy sweetness. It also has a nice woody and spicey side that really puts it in balance. Highly recommended.

In their race to the 1000th Ultimate bottling, I have been able to hold my FOMO. I did not buy any of their anniversary bottlings, although this Glen Grant is a pretty good one. I wonder how many of them will actually be opened. But there is much good whisky out there, and you can't buy them all.
