A really successful Ballechin, the Manzanilla goes very well with the dirty smoke. It's all fun.
    • Nose
spicy smoke, campfire, greasy, cinnamon chocolate, whereby the cinnamon is more indicated, dark fruits, a little sour, the smoke in the nose is just great, rarely had a campfire, in addition smoked bacon, a little salt and again and again clearly light chocolate , nice, with a little more time there is also a hint of maggi and for me it is just enough like a Madeira.
    • Taste
oily, nice dirty smoke, sweet, spice, cinnamon, chocolate, nuts, roasted aromas, raisins, but not so intense, rather smooth, alcohol is well integrated, I take that with the not intense after the second sip back, here now also salt on the tip of the tongue, some oak, which brings a slightly drier mouthfeel
    • Finish
relatively nutty at the back, the smoke decreases significantly, rather creamy, light sweetness, Hanuta, roasted aromas, yes, even a little smoke

Yeah, that's something different. Earthy, leathery, dirty, salty, with smoked bacon, salmiak / liquorice, bockwurst, maggi, damp piles of leaves, Petrichor, leather, wet wool, wild boar enclosure, tobacco and iodine tincture. Certainly not for every day, but it's a lot of fun, especially in autumn.
    • Taste
      87 87
Almost frighteningly drinkable at cask strength. The smokehouse of the nose is now complemented by acidity (red berries, balsamic vinegar) and sweetness (honey and ginger lemonade). The leather and the tobacco are very dominant.
    • Finish
      88 88
The Manzanilla has an impact on the back: It becomes nutty and salty, but remains hearty / spicy, with loose cigar tobacco and the bundled charm of a tried and tested smoked cottage.

Another ingenious ballechin from the sherry barrel, which in this case left a sweet and sticky influence. The smoke has diminished slightly over the years, but is definitely still strong. Nice part!
    • Nose

As soon as I pour it, glaringly peaty, smoky clouds are blowing towards me. The closer you get, the fatter and greasy it gets. The whole thing also has a sweetness, like a rib glaze. Definitely not a squeamish fellow! I like it, I could smell it forever.
    • Taste
      87 87
Nice oily start. great mouthfeel. In fact, very sweet at first and, despite the 55.5%, very good to eat straight. The impression of the sweetly glazed ribs hardens. Nice smoke, but also a little linear. One would say when smoking cigars.
    • Finish
      87 87
      Long, smoky, sweet, sticky. Gut!

    • Nose
Smoke not too dominant on the first nose, subtle muff with a herbal touch, red grapes, almost vinous, roasted aromas, burnt smokiness, the smoke comes out more strongly over time
    • Taste
Strong alcohol, fruity with red fruits, cold ashy greasy smoke, becoming drier

Fantastic Body on the Nose Smoked Ham (or rather the hams smoking Chamber), Cold Ash/ Bonfire, Sweeeetnes ( Honey/ Maple Syrup), Pipe tobacco, Weihrauch, Smoked fish, leather, Espresso, maybe Dark and Sour Fruits ( Brombeere, Rasperry,Cherry Like that ..it's not a fruity whisky) - Great. 94

Taste: Sweet, Salty, Sour ,cinnemon, ham, BBQ, Dark and Sour Fruits, Choclate, Nelken, leather/ gives what it promises but looses in intensity compared to the Nose. 90

Development/ Finish dry, ginger, oak, smoke, spices ( slight sweetness and sourness cold ashtray - 89

Well done a dirty, dry and earthy smoker bit more intensity in the taste and finish this would be even higher the nose is wonderful ;) / definitely not for every day...

Unusual and very intense. The saddle leather and the espresso are the clearest for me.
Overlaid for my taste and therefore somewhat one-sided.
The smoke tends to be smoked.
    But definitely a great experience!
    Playing with water is possible.
    • Nose
      87 87
Old leather that actually clearly reminds of a tack room. I've never found anything like this in a whisky. Generally very dry and intense! Chocolate mint candy, herbs, anise.
Smoke is closely interwoven with the dry sherry. A little getting used to.

Over time, the sherry notes become more classic. The smoke is clearly greasy. Like smoked meat.
      Herbs and spices still present.
    • Taste
      88 88
An explosion in the mouth without water. The entire mouth is immediately lined. Again the old leather with a strong tingling. A lot of salivation. Espresso clearly. Pipe tobacco or even cigar tobacco?
A little bitterness comes with time.
    • Finish
      88 88
The spice and the coffee remain. Is then gone after a medium time. Coffee notes are back. Very mouth filling! and intense.

I found this Ballechin really extraordinary. I don't think I had anything dirty, ashy, smoky in my glass yet. But you can't drink it too often and I think a whole 0.7 bottle would have been too much.
    • Nose
      87 87
Oily / sooty smoke, honey-smeared ham / bacon, leather
    • Taste

    • Finish
      87 87

schnappsdrossel is totally right: he is crazy and unique! not a malt that will please anybody or that you like to drink every night, but definitely an experience that will take you astray from the mainstream taste. Great part!

Pretty rough colleague. A lot of smoke. Campfire. However, rather smoldering fire. Ashy. From time to time I also think I hear incense. A mixture of light and dark fruits, which are rather sour. In addition, salty notes. A flatterer certainly is not. Somehow too rough. Would have blindly probably also younger estimated.

Smoked bacon, charcoal, burned grilled meat (grilled sausage), agreeably bitter and sour, the starch is correspondingly strong, fruitiness is limited, especially in the smell, but if I hold it in the mouth for a long time, raisins, plum jam, a hint of heavy red wine, dark berries ... on the finish white pepper, peppermint, charcoal - is good!

    Color: Chestnut / Oloroso sherry

What a stinker. Departed and unique enough for: 88P
    • Nose
Eeeek, salt and smoke attack, brine, sour, down-to-date diesel engine from yesteryear, bone-dry sherry, the Small Batch smells like honey sweet, sour oranges, unripe apples, lemon juice. Oh, zero alcohol. With water: saltier, sour-fruity, nutty.
    • Taste
Ashtray-bitter, cigarette butt with lemon juice, here is the alcohol noticeable, mouth-filling. Brazil nut, bunching green branches, yeast. With water: round, almost disgusting ashes. Polished oak wood.
    • Finish
Dry-yeast, Brazil nut, wet ash, smoke billowing from a wet-cleared campfire. Earth, charred tree bark. Long. Old leather.

  25. DerDennis! scored this whisky 83 points Specialist

Interesting and complex smell. Further away, maritime notes, bacon, leather and smoke dominate. If you go close to the glass, it is immediately spicy, harsh sweet and dark fruit.
Unfortunately, he does not reflect this complexity on the palate, the taste is still ok.
Rather disappointing I feel the not very pleasant departure for me, consisting of smoke, wood and a slight bitterness. Water does not help me either, just adds extra sweetness and then it gets more bitter.
    • Nose
      86 86
Smoke, smoked bacon, leather, salt, then a citrus note, spicy, cooling, malt, vanilla, rum raisins, later come harsh forest honey and mint, nutmeg. A constant change of flavors, very complex.
    • Taste
      84 84
Campfire smoke, white pepper, light sweetness, tannins, creamy, dark fruits, tart honey, plum syrup, also orange or mint shortly
    • Finish
      78 78
medium to long, oily, woody, smoke, only very slight fruit sweetness, bitter, ash

  26. LeChiffre scored this whisky 78 points Connoisseur

A fiercely intense smoky single malt with rough edges. Very interesting, but overall a bit too obvious tobacco / leather notes for my taste. The sample is enough for me.
    • Nose
      79 79
Clear smoke (campfire); single notes (the saddle leather comes through); earthy; light sweetness in the background; spicy; with water tobacco notes and aromatic
    • Taste
      78 78
Smoke flavorings; very spicy; intense tobacco notes; leathery; slightly nutty; herb-spicy in the mouth
    • Finish
      78 78
strong; Tobacco; leathery notes; herb-spicy; clearly smoky; a bit nutty
