[July, 2017]  Just a small sample courtesy of a friend but I have great expectations because of "The Bottlers".  This IB does only a few releases a year (and is somehow inactive the last years) but almost all of its bottlings are great with some real stunners among them.  The Brora/Clynelish and Port Ellen are legendary...

The colour is burnished and the texture shows just very late tears that slowly transform into legs.  The nose is quite punchy (no wonder at 58,9% abv) but once you adapted to this it offers a herbal sherry profile.  Usually this is not to my liking but this is nicely balanced with other sherry and malty aromas.  Not too bad but it cries for water.  The initial mouthfeel is hot and peppery and slightly coating (again I am sure water will help).  The taste is on that sherry-induced herbal-spicy profile again as is the long finish.  No bitter or drying moments.  With a fair share of water the nose is still somewhat shy (but not punchy anymore).  The mouthfeel is smoother and the taste gets even more herbal and slightly bitter.  The finish now has some bitter moments too.  More water takes this out again but it flattens the dram too.  If you prefer herbal profiles and you are not sensitive to slightly bitter notes than this is a great dram for sure.  Unfortunately I am different...

PS:  After reading all the other tasting notes I just checked my tastebuds with a dram I know very well and drink regularly - and it says that still my tastebuds are somewhat corrupted (from these strange Macduffs two days ago???).  Unfortunately I had a small sample of this Springbank only and cannot retaste it later - so do not take this review too seriously!

This Springbank has everything you want in a refill sherry cask matured whisky. All the sherry notes are wonderfully balanced. There's just a little hint of oak that goes really well with the other aromas. I could smell for hours. In the mouth it reminds me of the famous 32 y.o. Tobermory OB from 1972 (the "green one"). Bold sherry, some chocolate and nuts and just a beautiful hint of this classic springbank peat.I don't understand why SV gave this one such a low score but honours the 1982 Benrinnes (aka the "match stick from sulphur hell") from the bottlers with 90 Points...

Anyway, tastes are different. Luckily I was able to get one of this Bottle. Highly recommended.

Really not bad but water is recommended as it is very punchy and strong. It is clearly going in the direction of fresh sherry hogshead with the leathery notes. Fortunately the sweetness makes it more enjoyable.
    • Nose
Sweet oak wood, leathery, tropical fruits, ripe bananas, little vanilla
    • Taste
Punchy, oily, sweet, fruity, meaty, again a bit leathery, dark fruits.

With water more fruity notes show up like citrus fruits.
    • Finish
      Long and burning

Impressive sherried Springbank. Very enjoyable. Tnx for the sample Greg!
    • Nose
Wow, the nose starts as sweet as Coca Cola! Later on more on raisins and prunes. Dry oloroso sherry notes. Saltpetre and mushrooms. Balsamico vinegar. Musty leather. Very interesting nose. Not very typical Springbank in my view.
    • Taste
Round and rich. Fattish mocha and dark chocolate. Espresso coffee. Some cherries and oranges at the background. Walnut liqueur. Some roasted almonds. Stewed fruits of figs and dates. I even got beefy (Mortlach) notes at some point.
    • Finish
Quite long. Raspberry jam. Pomegranates. Cloves, Cinnamon. Liquorice.

    WITH WATER

Nose is even better now on caramel and sweet sherry

Palate - smooth on sherried chocolate and coffee with a slight bitterness.

    Finish smooth on coffee.

    An excellent IB Springbank
    • Nose
Really good on first nosing, strong sherry, chocolate and coffee with some caramel.

I hope the palate follows through.
    • Taste
Powerful, tingly but very smooth reminds me of and old cask strength Talisker.

Full bodied on plum sauce, soy sauce smoked dark meat, with ever so slight water chestnut. Not getting many fruity flavours.
    • Finish
Very ling and spicy, maybe ginger mixed with a little orange
