Whisky Reviews for Tomatin 1989 GM
3 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 89.50 points
- Lovely on the nose and stunning on the palate, but the rather vulgar oak influence subtracts a few pleasure points.
Exotic fruit salad and a carpenter's woodshop up front: plenty of sweet, jammy fruits and dusty oak / wood shavings. Then a creamy, chocolate-y spiciness becomes noticeable in the background, like Mexican mole. Light floral notes (lilies and daisies, perhaps?) and some chalk, which reminds me of Clynelish.
Excellent without water. Thick, full, and highly concentrated, with older, waxy / oily bourbon cask notes appearing first before giving way to an intense, luscious fruitiness (banana, pineapple, melon, lychee...).
At first I had no qualms, but after a while you do notice that this has a tart, mineralic edge to it, and the wood comes across more prominently (and more genuinely "oaky") than on the mid-palate, which docks it a few points.
- Fruit syrup, yellow fruit, sweet, sherry note, bitterness
