[September, 2015]  This is NOT Laphroaig - at least not Laphroaig as most people know it.  Distilled in the sixties and bottled in the seventies this baby is completely different even to the legendary 1966/7 Signatory vintages.

It has a great balance of simply everything: peat, sherry, fruitiness and sweetness in a close-to-perfection mix.  Surely, this jug improved additionally by the mysterious "bottle aging" over the decades... but bottle aging does improve great spirits only.  A dull whisky stays a dull whisky even after 40 years in the bottle (or jug)!  So this was exceptional good spirit when distilled with all the unrushed careful craft techniques back in the sixties.  And the casks they used for maturation (esp. the sherry butts) were of extraordinate quality too.  I am deeply impressed and yes, this whisky is worth even todays collector's prices for drinking.  Simply irresistible...

But be cautious, there were several different batches of these jugs bottled throughout the seventies and not all of it are that great (but nevertheless very fine drams too).

PS:  These jugs were quite cheap when sold in the seventies.  I bought it for 204 Euro in May, 2004.

Perhaps this decanter was tired, I don't seem to match the high scores
    • Nose

Bright citrus (Lemon), doughy bread, vanilla, grapefruit rind, lemongrass. Slight sour note, charcoal, peaches

Minerals, vanilla, breads and seaweed. Play-doh like, touch of salt and nice peat leading into finish. Saline, waxy

The nose is very muted but then on the palate there is so much complexity tropical fruits, cream, some delicate medicinal peat, the balance is amazing, an exceptional piece of history.

Luck to taste a newly opened bottle, still powerful on the palate.
    • Nose
Dusty, woody, grape skin, almost no peat, rather super old-style. Fresh grapes, violets, dried and crystallized fruits. Very creamy, becoming peatier after one sip.
    • Taste
Very salty, mellow and sweet, quite floral. Balanced and close to perfection, leather, and herbs, orange liquor, dark chocolates, salty and sour, long tea,
    • Finish
Medium, chocolate liquor, apple and cinammon.

Great nose. Gentle at first but quickly vibrant and complex. Palate is lively too with delicious fruity notes and much more.
So different from the modern Laphroaig.
    • Nose
Gentle peat smoke, tar, dust, light coastal and medicinal notes (iodine, camphor). A few minutes of breathing bring candied lemons and apricots, more medicinal notes, old leather, prunes, nuts, resinous notes, a few ashes.
    • Taste
A creamy and fruity palate. Citrus, peaches, apricots. A touch of brine, leather, dark chocolate, hints of spices, herbal notes, light medicinal notes and very light peat.
    • Finish
Medium, fruity, dusty, hints of cloves.

The nose promised very different things to what the palate delivered and for me this is a little underpowered but and it has  superb balance like some of the best blended whisky from the 50;s & 60's.The profile is lovely but hardly any peat on show here jus a lovely sweet whisky.
    • Nose
Quite light with a few medicinal notes, tar, coal dust, peat, brine, seaweed and floral gums?
    • Taste
Very nice and pretty sweet on sweet toffee, fruit cocktail, Turkish delight, fruit gummy bears and just a faint hint of brine and peat mixed with cream but the peat is almost non existent.
    • Finish
Good medium length, getting sweeter with a few bitter orange notes creeping in

[2015]  I had this dram during a private tasting of whisky connoisseurs at Limburg.

    In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 95.  I took no detailed notes as there were simply too many drams...

Every connoisseur brought several bottles from his collection to the tasting where they were lined up by common decision.  Just 1 cl was served as otherwise we probably would not have seen the end of the tasting without medical problems.

As this was a flabbergasting event I list all the line-up and my resp. scores below:
