Whisky Reviews for Old Pulteney 1989 LMDW

  1. Dede scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

A beautiful whisky with extreme profile. A Highland? Clynelish? Humph, too violent for a Clynelish. I even thought of a PE for this beautiful mineral / iodine combination, but there is really a lot of iodine and not enough peat (and then my wife told me that I would wallow in miserably ...) Here, I know I have an Old Pulteney in my bar ... And this whisky is excellent. Only its slightly weak finish prevents it from exceeding 90.
    • Nose
The first thing that strikes here is iodine. This whisky is very marine and gives the sensation of putting your nose over a oyster net, to breathe the spray along the Atlantic coast. Some fruity notes timidly manage to make their way through the storm (yellow fruits, lemon), accompanied by pepper. Ah, the minerality too, a beautiful limestone. With water: it becomes softer, the fruit barely less to express itself. Nice notes of fresh apricot, very sweet clementine appear, as well as more green, vegetal perfumes. Smoked malt is also felt. But the dominant iodine / minerality remain ahead.
    • Taste
First remark: there are watts! The palate is nervous and develops on pepper, green fruits and citrus fruits. Iodine is still very present, but much less dominant than the nose. A little water should do him good. A little more water ... Yes, it works well. Its power once mastered, this whisky becomes very pleasant, mineral, lemony, iodized and slightly peppered.
    • Finish
Medium length, it lacks intensity. We are on the green fruits, with notes of iodine (oysters) very marked, and a black olive scent appearing on the end.
