Whisky Reviews for Caol Ila 2008 SV

11 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 87.61 points

  1. Kantenmechaniker scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

A typical Caol Ila with a very subtle sherry finish, a touch too wild and impetuous to score big
    • Nose
At the beginning, the sherry smells only as a fruity sweet overtone, otherwise the Caol Ila character comes through well, some lemon, biscuit dough, tart and dry, a bit of glue, unsweetened cocoa, very unripe apple, sour, also almonds in the background, overall a little unripe, so not even from the alcohol, but really the aromas themselves
    • Taste
Oily, strong attack, a lot of bang, dry mouthfeel, bittersweet, lemon, tart, not really sweet, mint, better with the second sip, lots of citrus, but now also chocolate with a slight sweetness, not even that smoky, a pinch of cinnamon, that Finish was quite subtle
    • Finish
Becomes fresher, dry, salty, slightly dark, cocoa, now a hint of sweetness, light smoke

  2. rottendon scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

Great malt, not overly complex but very well balanced and a power man who pushes the right buttons. Absolutely top class, especially in the mouth!

    Notes from a blind tasting.

Strong campfire smoke with barbeque sauce and dark caramel right after pouring. After some standing time, it is clearly more mineral, more coal-fired than campfire, slightly phenolic. Was there anything else? A bit of acid, disinfectant, with still caramel behind it. Warmed up more minerally at first, then the acidity gains momentum, in the end it actually looks very sweet, a lot of dark caramel and malt candy, the smoke gently envelops the aromas.
    • Taste

Very soft and super integrated alcohol, because it is strong (elicits a single tear from my right eye without burning my tongue)! The mouthfeel is super dense and creamy, you can almost cut it. First there is a dark, malty sweetness, burnt caramel, then a strong acidity, somehow without a suitable association, not really fruity. A slightly salty note of bacon is added late. In the second sip, it's a continuous journey of flavors, accompanied by strong alcohol, that's pretty much perfect!
    • Finish
      89 89
For the amount of smoke, the finish is actually rather short (it's already a long time, don't worry!), Briefly but enormously warming the chest, fades away on the sweet side before a nice smoky cornstarch lingers on the tongue.

  3. Rosebank88 scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
Wonderfully aromatic with fresh smoked fish, ham salt and smoldering peat fire. Gradually follow slightly fruity-smoky barbecue sauce, burned meat, seaweed, iodine, wet leather, oak and a hint of laurel.
With water: very salty, beautiful harbor aromas to Tang, algigen ropes, fish, mud and old machines. Smoldering peat smoke behind.
    • Taste
Powerful start with lots of peat, salt, iodine, coated black tea, roasted chestnuts, fine sherry and a smoker of fish.
With water: Smoky and smoldering. With lots of seaweed, salt and dark chocolate.
    • Finish
Very long and beautiful after peat smoke and smoked fish.
