A very nice bottling, well matured and balanced. Could (and should) be a bit more complex for old age.

With water something more open, beautiful and complex.
The finish is the weak point of the whole.
    • Nose
      89 89
Immediately deliciously fruity: a mixture of pineapple, star fruit, pear and some passion fruit. Vanilla, linoleum.
Looks fresh-fruity and yet ripe. Good depth.
    • Taste
      90 90
Strong, warm, more masculine onset, sparkling, slightly peppery. Neat smoke, yellow and bright fruits and cereal notes. Wired construction.
      Gradually becomes rounder. Concentrated.
    • Finish
      87 87
Not very long, but harmonious and aromatic. A hint of maritime, fine vanilla.

    Tasted blind:
Beautiful, bright color. The scent remains subdued, I don't pick up a lot of pronounced details. Very vaguely a candy cane. Showing glue, little bit of grass. On the middle of the tongue a nice bitterness. A hint of dark chocolate that continues to the aftertaste. Doesn't really open, not even with a drop of water. A dry grain note in the distance when I smell again. Also a fresher bottom layer that makes the whole thing a bit more interesting. I'm thinking of an idle cask that has been aged for a long time. No STR! The aftertaste is reminiscent of standard 10 year old malt whisky from the nineties. Simpler times. Well balanced, good drink, slightly one-sided.

Incredibly intense and at the same time round ex-bourbon whisky. The best of this kind that I have had in my glass so far.
    • Nose
      94 94
Very complex. Honey, vanilla, oak, fruity. It makes your mouth water.
    • Taste
      96 96
Powerful start, fills the whole mouth. Very oily. Great wood aromas with dark chocolate. Then comes the honey sweetness massively. Vanilla is present all the time. Insanely good
    • Finish
      95 95
Long finish. The honey sweetness feels like it lasts forever. Plus great bittersweet chocolate.

    Appearance: golden yellow
Nose: The smoke is extremely beautiful and discreetly integrated into the bouquet. Tobacco, fresh fruits, sweetness, vanilla, subtle oak, some herbs, slightly tangy
Mouthfeel: Very dry, tingling on the tongue, very slight astringency
Taste: tobacco, fruits, herbs, slight sweetness (more dominant in the finish), peat and ash,
Finish: Light sweetness alternating with, some smoke and oak, pineapple, dark chocolate, very nice long finish

orchard fruits, ash, spices, banana, vanilla, herbs, tad bitter, very nice

I really like the nose but on the palate and in the finish it is a tad too bitter to catch up
    • Nose

Lot of vanilla, banana, peach, coconut powder, honeydew, whiffs of smoke, hints of yellow fruits, little apricot, wet hay, pipe tobacco - very good!

Little punchy, subtle sweetness, little fruity, little leafy and herbal, little peaty, honey, vanilla, zesty, lime peel, little grapefruit

What a delicious drop, honey, yellow dried fruit, caramelized apple and pineapple gradually works its way through my nose, which doesn't want to stop sniffing. It's worth giving him the time he deserves
    • Taste
      91 91
It is oily and with a pleasant note of vanilla, you can taste the gentle, very well selected bourbon barrel
    • Finish
      92 92
Incredibly present and long, I chew on old, soft, delicious leather.
Not only from the PLV a winner compared to other 30 year olds

this dram was behind the 24th door in my whisky calender 2020 :) i did not have many 30y plus whiskies in my life, but this one i enjoy. very round - no edges can be found here. the sweetness works well with some sweet oak. if there was any peat here it disappeared over the years. beatiful dram.
    • Nose
      90 90
you definitely smell the age, sweet wood, raisins, brown sugar, leather polish, more oak. tamarin in a cigar box. the nose is a rather closed one. overripe oranges, dried orange zest. musty cork and marcipane. bit cheesy maybe?
    • Taste
      92 92
wow this is someting! almost maritime sweet notes, umami flavors with fresh sweetness. the peat is very gentle if there is any at all. no edges found. very rounded sweetness. sweet oak. very ripe exotic fruits. papaya with some bitter cocoa powder maybe? reminds me a bit of arran with this maritime sweetness.
    • Finish
      88 88
middle long with leaving a nice feeling on the tongue. no ginger or so. very round indeed. hard to find certain flavours because it is so round.

Well-balanced whisky. But without the frills. I enjoyed it, and I think it's good to drink it in the company of friends.
    • Nose

Sweet aromas of yellow apples, lime, vanilla, and warm candied fruit cake. A little smoke.
    • Taste
      88 88
The sweet, floral-apple taste is long and resonant. Soft smoke.
    • Finish

So, the oldest I was allowed to try so far. Mild and round, yet incredibly intense with sweet baked apples, vanilla and honey. Actually exactly what you would expect from a pure ex-Bourbon whisky, only much more mature and intense. Nice experience!
    • Nose
First juicy, sweet baked apple and vanilla. Then some campfire smoke, old wood and a trace of nutmeg. In addition, intense honey and old hay. After the first sip, the apples are joined by passion fruit and pineapple. Very interesting and ripe nose.
    • Taste
Very creamy with vanilla, here too the baked apple is very dominant. In addition, peppery, ripe oak. Very pleasant mouthfeel.
    • Finish
Creamy vanilla, oak spices and applesauce, later also orange.

30 year old original bottling in cask strength and as vintage 1987.
    Natural in all areas.
What more do you want ...
    Very clear recommendation.
Very balanced and balanced complex mix of rather lighter fruits, oak spices, spices and herbs. Plus vanilla and toffee from the bourbon casks.
Even some tropical fruits like pineapple, coconut and light melons.
On top of that, light, very reserved and pleasant, rather warm smoke.
    A total work of art.

A gentleman. Very set, slightly spicy, slightly smoky, slightly sweet. A little bit of everything, too much of nothing. There are juicy apple flavors, but this whisky still looks pleasantly old and ripe. Ardmore 1996 (20yo OA, WID: 102030), for example, looks fresh compared to a 12-year-old. Due to the "glowing" character I feel distant from my favorite standard that Talisker 18 reminds me of. Great whisky, but the current issue price (around € 250 at the end of May 2020) is beyond my pain threshold. It is not particularly good for the money.
    • Nose
      89 89
Thick, creamy vanilla, with solid oak, some nutmeg. Light smoke. Later, homemade, freshly grated apple sauce is added, which alternates with spicy aromas from the old oak.
    • Taste
      88 88
Very set, creamy vanilla here too. "Smoldering" is quite good here: delicate smoke in a harmonious interplay with set, pleasantly spicy, slightly peppery oak aromas. A little saw shavings.
    • Finish
      87 87
In the finish it subsides a little. The same aromas as in the nose and mouth, but significantly weaker: creamy vanilla, spicy oak, slightly sweet, slightly smoky. Here the oak shows a little bitterness. Quite quickly gone.

Mild and yet so intense and full of character. This Ardmore impresses with its mature age and the wonderfully coordinated aromas. Old, solid and tasty!

    22/23/22/22 (89P)
    • Nose
Intense toffee shines in the Premium Snifter, light earthy smoke blows from a distance, sugar beets and fried bacon exude their delicious, but also peculiar aroma with yellow fruits and honey. Raisins, slightly fermented yellow fruits, hints of leather and trophic fruits paired with neat peat and ashy smoke. The bacon left out in butter comes into its own in a creamy way, a hint of caramel and milk chocolate, the earthy notes gradually fade away and sweet fruit remains.
    • Taste
Mild and spicy. The first impression is wonderfully round and creamy, apricots and raisins play with each other before cold smoke is powerfully distributed with earthy peat and pleasant sharpness. A pinch of black pepper sticks between the lips with spicy wood tones, subtle mineral smoke and earth tones permeate the palate with cozy warmth, leather is minimal. Menthol and chili dissolve from fly ash and charred pieces of wood, subtle sharpness warms the entire mouth area and massively stimulates saliva at the moment.
    • Finish
Hazelnuts and smoked oak rest on the palate, sweetness plays dark fruit, creamy wood blends with subtle spiciness, a pinch of salt and menthol freshness. Slightly smoky notes stick between tongue and palate, peaty announces the end of the aftertaste. Shortly thereafter, the aftertaste gains volume again, a hint of menthol blends with creamy caramel and earth tones.

Really good malt. I like it. This is set again compared to the 20yo (WID: 102030). But has a lot of punch, especially in the mouth, which is not unpleasant. The smoke is expected to be more restrained than the 20yo.
I like the 20s very much and he is also PLV-moderately recommended. The 30s lays it still a shovel on it. But that also has to be paid well.
    • Nose
Nice, comparatively fine nose. Sugar beets. Herbal honey. Rather yellow fruits. Cloudberry jam. Apricots. From time to time also a penchant for the exotic. Maybe something like dragon fruit. Slightly smoked meat. Campfire. After a while, spices like nutmeg come. And generally oak. The longer and more often you smell, the less the fruits become. But it is spicier, oakier and also a certain freshness comes through.
    • Taste
A mixture of beautiful, creamy sweetness and spice. Honey again. Toffee. Marzipan. In addition ginger candy. Chilli oil. Then comes the oak. The sweetness subsides and the sharpness combines with the spice of the oak. It is getting drier.
The smoke is very discreet here.
    • Finish
Nuts. Some herbs. Still a little prickle. Now the smoke is stronger again but still rather restrained. Tree bark.

Different from Ardmore Vintage 1996 20yo, but no less great. Beautifully complex in taste. However, the price is excessive, especially when compared to 20yo. (Based on Sample - Whisky Festival 2019.)
    • Nose
At first rather subtle. Old lacquered furniture, smoked cheese, burning wood - bonfire, boiled potatoes, spice mix, worcestry sauce.

After adding a few drops of water: Vegetable broth, cinnamon.
    • Taste
Almost smoke-free. Slightly prickly at first. Sweet to honey, chili peppers, peppers, cappuccino chocolate. Very long body.

After adding a few drops of water: Softened. Kohlrabi, leek, young spring onion, cappuccino.
    • Finish
Hellly long and intense. Herbs, slightly woody, mint, menthol, boiled vegetables, salinity, soy sauce, balsamic vinegar.

After adding a few drops of water: White pepper, radish, overripe and hard peas.

  38. Achany scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

sweet honey peat, some dried yellow fruits, dried apples, leathery, full bodied, quite a lot of peat for this age, cold ashes, very very gentle wet and moldy hay. Oaky and spicy as well but not in the spotlight. the finish is long, starts rather sweet and gets smokier and peatier the longer it lasts.
Compared to the 20yo this has more complexity and is more like an old and dignified Islay. What a fine dram this on is!
