Great nose! Palate follows fairly close, but it loses me at the finish. Musty sherry, baking spice laden, caramel and oak.

Delicious complex whisky, with hints of dried apricots and Duchess soda. Not at all like all subsequent GlenAllachie 10 yo batches.
    • Nose
Pear candies, yellow apple, leaves, bark, spices.
    • Taste
Apricot, sour yellow apple, pepper, tannins and Duchess soda.
    • Finish
Medium length, with tones of pear, yellow apple, dried apricots, pepper and oak.

  5. Boletus did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

A very well-made malt, which, however, is not quite round and somewhat bitter due to the not ideally integrated alcohol and the somewhat too strong tannins. Although adding water makes it milder, it also makes it appear paler and more arbitrary. Overall, the whisky is fun, but could be a little better balanced. Perhaps the virgin oak portion was a bit too much of a good thing.
    • Nose
Oranges and juicy grapes, hints of wine gum, the very slightly pungent alcoholic note dissipates quickly, the oak almost bites your nose at the beginning, but also offers partly toasted aromas next to the tannins, some vanilla, ripe red apples, roasted notes Malt and a hint of coffee powder, the smoke residue of a New Year's Eve cracker drifts by in the distance, the barley appears quite playful, fresh and still green walnuts, a subtle herbal note comes into play, tending toward thyme and marjoram
    • Taste
The ripe apples determine the start, honey is added, orange fruit gum, the slight alcoholic spiciness combines with the quite strong tannins to create a somewhat hard ride, the flow of saliva is boosted, as a result the juicy grapes emerge, clean barley, slightly grassy, again the herbal note, hazelnuts, the longer it is in the mouth, the clearer the oak becomes, but rather slightly bitter and only a little toasted
    • Finish
Medium length, amazingly soft and slightly dry, malty, roasted hazelnuts, some dark chocolate with raisins, one or the other walnut with bitter skin creeps in, now the oak is becoming clearer again, black coffee, finally vanilla dares to emerge, a slightly grassy aftertaste remains

    March 2021:
    Glenallachie 15y VS
Glenallachie 10y Cask Strength Batch 2 VS
Glenallachie 10y Cask Strength Batch 3 VS
Glenallachie 10y Cask Strength Batch 4

first of all i must say that i am a bit preoccupied after buying a bottle of the 12 year old, which was my biggest disappointment in 2020. making the bottle empty was a real struggle for me. there is this bitter wood note which annoys me so much. tastes as if 8th fill casks have been used.

especially after it has been hyped quite a bit i was a bit confused how people could enjoy this stuff that much. i asked myself if there was somethin wrong with me? it was almost a whisky identity crisis... eventually the bottle ended as a mixer for highballs, which was quite ok :)

but back to the actual match today. the cask strengths and the 15y old battle of allachies. starting with the 15y it is a massive upgrade to the 12y standard bottling. it shows very elegant and ripe notes for its age. could be at least 3 years older in my opinion. if there wouldnt be this bitter thing in the middle of the palate, this would be a 87-88 whisky for me. now i´m wondering if it is maybe the distillery character and not a virgin oak or overused cask i am talking about here?

cask strength batch 2 was a big disappointment for me today. very grainy and this bitter note i already mentioned before was very dominant. it almost hurts when i taste it. reminds me of the dark times with the 12 year old. i mean, am i the only one getting this?

cask strength batch 3 was my absolute favorite of the evening. everything very rounded. the sherry ifluence is much stronger here, but still leaves some air for the actual spirit to show its character. rather sweet and very rounded. nice stuff.

batch 4, unfortunately, shows more similarities to batch 2 (bad batch) than to batch 3 (good batch). these unrounded grain notes combined with this bitter thingy which i dislike makes the whole experience rather challenging, but not in a good way. the sherry influence helps it a bit. still, not my thing.

all in all a very interesting but rather disappointing experience to be honest. i hope that one day i will try a glenallachie who does not shows me this bitter and dry thing which annoys me so much. batch 3 already goes in a nice direction, but i think (or actually hope) there is more :)
    • Nose
      83 83
bright nose. the high abv does not feel uncomfortable at all. the big gym hall in my school had this smell of these wooden gymnastics equipments. i get a lot of grain notes (not grain alcohol), such as rye and wheat. sweet shery notes, not the nutty ones. milk chocolate.
    • Taste
      78 78
hmm... starts off with a grain punch in your face. not sure what to think about that... then shows some fruit but these disappear very quickly and leavy this virgin oak dryness in your mouth. not my thing unfortunately. astringend and not really enjoyable from my point of view. very oily tecture.
    • Finish
      77 77
the aftertaste remind me of soap and leaves this uncomfortable virgin oak dry bitter mouth feeling. kind of sad.

Strong, spicy and very great fruitiness.
    • Nose
First sweet apples and pears, with vanilla and honey, great spices. In the background sweet plums. With a little water even fruity with peaches.
    • Taste
Full, strong and sweet with honey, creamy vanilla and dark fruits.
    • Finish
Lots of honey, oranges and nice spices. Later light, woody bitterness.

    Appearance: Bright golden orange.

Nose: Waxy, sherry, raisins, cinnamon. Light oak.

Palate: Hot booze, vanilla, raisins, cinnamon, ginger, sherry. Malt biscuits.

Finish: Peppery, spicy, boozy, honey. Bitter.

With Water: Necessary. Still quite waxy, spicy, peppery, hot.

Overall: Very young and boozy. Not near as impressive as their old versions to me. A bit too simple and young.

Room temperature when drinking: 20 ℃

Viewing Eyes: golden smell Nose: waxy texture, oily texture, a little bit of yeast dough, maple sugar toast and honey milk sweetness Yellow fruit, yellow peach, jackfruit. At the same time, there is a dry shell of walnut opal, and the burnt barley taste Palate: bitter at the entrance, roasted barley, the subsequent sourness and astringency increase, and the sense of stimulation is no longer. Dry wood strips, walnut Ooze wine Body: medium to high oiliness

    Nose: 83/100
    Palate: 80/100
    Finish: 83/100
    Body: 83/100
    Overall: 82/100

Overall: nose is still dominated by dried wheat aroma and yellow fruit. The sourness and bitterness at the entrance is almost no friends, and I do n’t understand the idea of bm.

N- Young and lively with upfront vanilla, floral, some porridge with sharp citrus on a thin caramel crisp biscotti, quite colourful and well build by the strength and remains solid. Fine classic speyside-r with various quality tropical fruits drifting around to keep the nose entertained. Some starfruits, apricot etc. (87/21)

P- Fresh. Peach, apricot and maraschino kind of stone fruits. Creamy sweet with toasted nuance of honey and vanilla. Mixed spices dryness. (88/22)

F- Medium long, minty, echoing spices with sweet honey. Good weight and warming. (87/21)

B/B- 89/22 Neither anything unusually good nor bad. Like the solidness of this without being overly oak-y and strike a good balance with the various type of oaks.

Bright fruit bomb with a great malt taste and a long finish. The oak is to taste and the sherry finish rounds off the filling a bit, but is very in the background. A wonderful and wonderfully strong malt.

    Delicious

Again, a very fruity, just like GlenAllachie 12yo, but this time it is more about fruit in an immature form. However, the end of the body - after the slight bitterness subsides - reaches the liqueur sweetness.

Adding water tends to hurt rather than help - making acidity and bitterness stronger.
    • Nose
A lot of pineapple. Furthermore, dried banana, vanilla, fresh sweet fennel (tuber), honey, light musty and ethanol.

After adding water: Gently polish the furniture. Boiled potatoes, dough and pistachio ice cream.
    • Taste
Initially relatively bland, pungent and bitter. Gradually to creamy in consistency on the palate. Slightly pepper and dry ash. Vanilla pudding, green tones and black without.

After adding water: Acid milk, unripe gooseberry, pistachio, unripe plum and fresh ginger.
    • Finish
Finishing is bitter and woody. Lemon peel, grapefruit pulp, cinnamon bark and banana peel.

When water is added: it gets even bitter. Unripe peach, apricot pips, lemon pulp, grapefruit peel, unripe banana and green tea.

Oh, that's interesting. The nose is very different from Batch 1 and brings a note that I can not define right away. Something musty, like wet wood or even a wet rope. Again there is a sweet hint of vanilla and honey with herbs. I also find red apple, toffee, sugared grapefruit, banana. For a while I think of a piece of hand soap. With water, the Batch 2 opens and becomes chocolatier and darker overall.
    • Taste
      86 86
Sweet, oily, malty. There are chocolate covered raisins, honey, a piece of apple and almond cake, rosemary, lots of wood, a little mint and slightly bitter pear peel.

Medium with honey, ginger and clear wood.
