Tasted with friends in a session including three Kilkerran 08 year old Cask Strength.

1.- 56.2% bottled 2017. Quite clean and compact. Some smoke. Nice solid dram. 85

    2. - 55.7% bottled 2017. Smoke and dirtiness are more present, providing a more complex and rounded sensation. 87

    3. - 56.5% bottled 2018. Very smooth. Smoked mixed with sweet nuts and whipped cream. Richer than the others. The winner of the session. 88

It seems the longer Kilkerran works, the better quality we will get. Hope they continue like this.

    (Tasted blind)
    APPEARANCE: Medium deep golden colour.
NOSE: Waxy, oily, old leather armchair, dried yellow fruits, whole black cardamom pods, old tobacco. Lovely. Smells of age. (89-90p).
TASTE: The arrival is rich, a bit "fat". On the mid palate there's quite the old fashioned spice bazaar going on, with lots of old tobacco, whole black cardamom pods, leather, laurels and black pepper. But at the back end of the bazaar, a whole lemon shop is hiding, with fresh lemons, lemon peel, cured lemons, salty lemon brine etc (you get the picture). How intriguing. I think this holds well above 50% ABV, perhaps in the high 50s. (89-90p).
EXIT: Fat, a bit oily, then quite some black pepper/wood tannin. Long (88p).
OVERALL: Everything about this whisky smells and tastes of prolonged barrel ageing. Still my gut tells me this may not be that old but may have aged in (a) very active cask(s) or in a warmer climate. TOTAL SCORE 89 points.

One of the best 8-year ex-bourbon bottlings for the price (between 45 and 50 euros 2019). Pure or with water, depending on your mood.
    • Nose
      88 88
Subtle, dry peat smoke. Slightly maritime: salt, seaweed, sea breeze, mineral, shell limestone. Citrus, mint and vanilla, malt, bread dough, boiled fruits.
    • Taste
      88 88
Sweet and light peat smoke. Malt, vanilla, light fruits, citrus, salt, mint, white pepper. Round and easy to drink
    • Finish
      89 89
Remains for a long time. Is slowly becoming drier, but the smoke is never present too much.

N- Coastal ashes with burn barks and leaf, carbon with tinge of sweet rum syrup. Liquorice with smoked fruits comes along with exotic sweet pipe tobacco, generous doses of minerals opened up for sweet toasted citrus peel to emerged. Eucalyptus, sprightly and nose warming. Dash of new paints and diluted chlorine underlay. (92/23)

P- spicy bitter peat, sounds horrid but some how it balanced well with the sweet peaches. Crushed mints, white liquorice, sweet juicy spirits with hefty fume arousing the nose. (89/22)

F- Medium long, perfectly dry mouthfeel with lovely crispness. Peppery, sweet mints with refine burning sensation on the palate. Sweetness overdrive a little that may have masked some of the alluring coastal notes. (88/22)

B/B- 89/22 My note for Batch 2017 says it would be perfect to pair this with pipping hot black coffee, my sentiments exactly now.

Very close to the 12 year old bottling from 2017, to my taste. Slightly more rough, maybe feinty notes. Aside from that, I again get that clover honey sensation; floral notes on the notes, glucose sweetness on the palate (which reminds me of clover / linden tree honey). There's more to it, of course, especially in the long finish. But I am not too good at describing, so I rather leave it to that.
Nice mouthfeel, natural colour, cask strength - quality-wise there is not a single issue, in my opinion, for an eight year old.

    Appearance: Straw gold. Viscous.

Nose: Ginger, cinnamon, vanilla, malt sugar, apple, smells young indeed. Maybe a bit salty but not really smoky, oh, just a touch of campfire is coming out now. grilled pineapple. Something herbal too.

Palate: Sweet, barley sugar, oak, light smoke, cinnamon, pineapple, apple, sweet orange and marmalade. Alcohol is strong. Young, fruity, sweet. Needs water.

Finish: Sweet barley sugar, alcohol burn, light tannic wood and some spices.

With Water: Sweeter, spices emerge more, fruity. Absolutely necessary at cask strength. More smoke comes out too, but not huge at all. Less than Springbank. Sherry comes out a bit too. Raisins.

Overall: Young but rather big and full-bodied.

Room temperature when drinking: 15 ℃

    Viewing Eyes: Gold

Smell Nose: At first it was smoked bacon, charcoal, cooking smoke. Green apples, vanilla, nectar, and fragrant pears slowly appeared. At the same time, there are European buns and white toast. Then turn to oak barrels, lemon peel. At the end, citrus jam, orange-flavored lollipop, and green arrow original chewing gum appeared. A little alcohol.

Taste Palate: sweet and sour lemon juice, a flash of smoked bacon, a campfire, a drop of ash and dirt, a little bit of ginger spicy, back to the sweet, oak barrel, peach mousse, vanilla, Cream cake, the cream of figs and wood together, a bit like bushmills 16, dry

Finishing: Medium and short, orange syrup, sweet orange, light figs, residual bitter bottom, earth, bacon

    Body: lighter and smoother

    Nose: 83.5 / 100

    Palate: 83.5 / 100

    Finish: 84/100

    Body: 84/100

    Overall: 84/100

Overall: Smell is more restrained and clear. The smoky feeling is very weak, and it is fleeting when drinking.

Although the 2019 Sherry made the crowd go wild, this humble bourbon version of Kilkerran 8 is in no way inferior. Being sold at retail several months later only sweetens the deal. From nose to finish it is just pure Campbeltown goodness. Pastries, custard, tart fruit and minerals, supported by a beautiful peat that never tries to steal the show. Elegant yet powerful, complex yet not complicated, high strength but never hot. Can't really ask for more and a steal at €50.
