One of the best 8-year ex-bourbon bottlings for the price (between 45 and 50 euros 2019). Pure or with water, depending on your mood.
    • Nose
      88 88
Subtle, dry peat smoke. Slightly maritime: salt, seaweed, sea breeze, mineral, shell limestone. Citrus, mint and vanilla, malt, bread dough, boiled fruits.
    • Taste
      88 88
Sweet and light peat smoke. Malt, vanilla, light fruits, citrus, salt, mint, white pepper. Round and easy to drink
    • Finish
      89 89
Remains for a long time. Is slowly becoming drier, but the smoke is never present too much.

With half a t-spoon of water: On the nose sweet and soft peat and vanilla. Palate - the same but more expressive. Dense and oily. A touch of farmhouse. Medium length. Good!

I know that its recharred Oloroso-aged sibling got the lion’s share of the attention back in (oh god) 2019, but I always had a soft spot for the very raw and rustic bourbon caskers in Kilkerran’s 8 year CS series. Well put together with surprising depth. I find myself sometimes getting bored with full bottles of younger whiskies since they don’t always have the same capacity to morph over time as older bottles do, but that’s not the case here. There’s plenty going on. It has a solid backbone of that musty Springbank-esque funk but I find Kilkerran to be drier, sootier, and just a bit more rough and austere. Good representative of undisguised distillery character! I’ll do a review of the sherry cask 8, but I certainly hope KK does another bourbon cask release in the near future.
    • Nose
Toffee, vanilla, dulce de leche that’s verging on burnt and sickly sweet. Funky overripe pineapple, damp basement. Wet dog, unwashed wool, lanolin (maybe just my sweater, hmm). Some fleeting cereals, dusty grist, dark bread. With water the sticky sweet notes settle a bit and things kind of close up, but those sweaty, farmy, musty notes are still a big part of the character.
    • Taste
Sweet and sour citrus upfront, like a fresh grapefruit — really bright and tart — then goes straight to pith, rind, bitter citrus flavors. Mouth watering saltiness. Soot, smoke, minerals. Musty, dirty and very rustic. It’s punchy but in my opinion there is no need for dilution, water does amplify the salty citrus in a big way however.
    • Finish
Spicy, white pepper, growing bitterness. Medicinal, bandaids (but not in an Islay way), ointment, camphor. Ashy, resinous, a little bit tannic, those toasted sugar notes from the nose coming back. Medium length, the pepper stays the longest.

I've had this bottle open for over two years, and it kept getting better, especially in the very end. Started out as an 87/86 whisky, but the last dram earned 89 points in my book.

Classic bourbon style. A little bit island due to the rather high percentage of alcohol. 21-22-22-22

  20. OJK scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

On the nose slightly more industrial and honey-led than batch 2, with saline chalk and seaweed. Oily and creamy on the palate with added almonds, vanilla and banana, and a soft undercurrent of mineral bitterness giving it an enjoyable complexity and balance. Herbal spice on the finish with soft coastal smoke and bitter dark chocolate with salt. Again so much character and complexity at such a young age.

Although the 2019 Sherry made the crowd go wild, this humble bourbon version of Kilkerran 8 is in no way inferior. Being sold at retail several months later only sweetens the deal. From nose to finish it is just pure Campbeltown goodness. Pastries, custard, tart fruit and minerals, supported by a beautiful peat that never tries to steal the show. Elegant yet powerful, complex yet not complicated, high strength but never hot. Can't really ask for more and a steal at €50.

    (Tasted blind)
    APPEARANCE: Medium deep golden colour.
NOSE: Waxy, oily, old leather armchair, dried yellow fruits, whole black cardamom pods, old tobacco. Lovely. Smells of age. (89-90p).
TASTE: The arrival is rich, a bit "fat". On the mid palate there's quite the old fashioned spice bazaar going on, with lots of old tobacco, whole black cardamom pods, leather, laurels and black pepper. But at the back end of the bazaar, a whole lemon shop is hiding, with fresh lemons, lemon peel, cured lemons, salty lemon brine etc (you get the picture). How intriguing. I think this holds well above 50% ABV, perhaps in the high 50s. (89-90p).
EXIT: Fat, a bit oily, then quite some black pepper/wood tannin. Long (88p).
OVERALL: Everything about this whisky smells and tastes of prolonged barrel ageing. Still my gut tells me this may not be that old but may have aged in (a) very active cask(s) or in a warmer climate. TOTAL SCORE 89 points.

Very close to the 12 year old bottling from 2017, to my taste. Slightly more rough, maybe feinty notes. Aside from that, I again get that clover honey sensation; floral notes on the notes, glucose sweetness on the palate (which reminds me of clover / linden tree honey). There's more to it, of course, especially in the long finish. But I am not too good at describing, so I rather leave it to that.
Nice mouthfeel, natural colour, cask strength - quality-wise there is not a single issue, in my opinion, for an eight year old.

Very clean, precise. Influence of cereals.
      Pleasant without being complex.

      Obvious family resemblance with Springbank.

After 5-6 minutes, overripe fruit (banana), oil, traces of algae. Interesting.

    Appearance: Straw gold. Viscous.

Nose: Ginger, cinnamon, vanilla, malt sugar, apple, smells young indeed. Maybe a bit salty but not really smoky, oh, just a touch of campfire is coming out now. grilled pineapple. Something herbal too.

Palate: Sweet, barley sugar, oak, light smoke, cinnamon, pineapple, apple, sweet orange and marmalade. Alcohol is strong. Young, fruity, sweet. Needs water.

Finish: Sweet barley sugar, alcohol burn, light tannic wood and some spices.

With Water: Sweeter, spices emerge more, fruity. Absolutely necessary at cask strength. More smoke comes out too, but not huge at all. Less than Springbank. Sherry comes out a bit too. Raisins.

Overall: Young but rather big and full-bodied.

I like at least a couple teaspoons of water with this. Can't go wrong with these, I prefer the 12 but I like to have this around too. earmarked one to bottle age for a few decades, and this is such a character than it'll no doubt bring me right back to now.

    • Taste
youthful and zesty arrival. more sponge, crackers, part baked baguette, putty, raspberry vinegar, aniseed balls (my favourite, after salt liquorice). smoke comes in in the finish, hot coals, ashy twigs and smoked putty (ok, that's not a thing)

Tasted with friends in a session including three Kilkerran 08 year old Cask Strength.

1.- 56.2% bottled 2017. Quite clean and compact. Some smoke. Nice solid dram. 85

    2. - 55.7% bottled 2017. Smoke and dirtiness are more present, providing a more complex and rounded sensation. 87

    3. - 56.5% bottled 2018. Very smooth. Smoked mixed with sweet nuts and whipped cream. Richer than the others. The winner of the session. 88

It seems the longer Kilkerran works, the better quality we will get. Hope they continue like this.

This expression is gradually becoming more subtle per batch. The raw, oily Campbeltown profile from the first batch had deminished quite a bit in the next and has almost disappeared in this third one. I have a slight preference for the previous one, but also this one is definitely a bang-for-your-buck whisky that I warmly recommend. Even more so than the standard 12YO in fact.

What can I say? I am not a friend of young whiskys, There are only a few that make my taste. The alcohol is usually too much and makes it difficult to enjoy.

This cask strength can not really be enjoyed without a few drops of water. Too agitated, too severe.

I do not think that I have found a new friend. But it could also have been up to me. I'll invest the € 50.00 somewhere else next time.

This whisky reminds me of a young Linkwood, who is also not one of my favorites.

But I love the big brother. Maybe I have to be patient and wait a few years.

I do not want to ban Glengyle after all.

Vanilla, hay, peat, citrus scents, smoke, the alcohol makes more fragrance detection more difficult.

Vanilla dominates, plus citrus fruits, but only if you add a few drops of water. Themselves to blame. I did not have to buy an 8-year-old.

Means short. Maximum. Disappointing for the price. At least the vanilla prevails.
