Great, fresh and spicy nose, powerful spicy taste, long, sticky sweet woody finish with plum and slight bitterness.
Great blend with good PLV. Unfortunately a bit too sharp. Water does not really help, because it makes it more bitter.

Edit: After the bottle has been open for some time, the bitterness has gone and the addition of water makes it better. With water I would raise to 88 points

Sweet, dark fruit, spicy, nutmeg, hair spray, plum syrup, slightly metallic, herbs, malt, clove, sultanas, flowery, grated lemon zest, green, fresh pine needles. I imagine smelling faint smoke and light sulfur.

[May, 2017]  This review is on the most recent edition of a Glencoe as it was served at the end of a distillery tour today.

The colour is old gold and the texture shows fast thick legs and very late tiny tears.  The nose is quite punchy due to the high abv and offers a modern sherry profile with a nutty spike ... and the usual slight sulphury aromas (not nice, but bearable at least).  It arrives hot but mouth coating, not too bad (as the Aussies would state!).  The taste is again on nutty sherry flavours with stronger (and this time annoying) sulphury aromas.  Same on the finish - so all you lovers of the smell of hell, this one's for you!  I will not go for a second dram simply to nurse my tastebuds...  With water it gets a little better (sweeter, even nuttier and the sulphur is less annoying).

By the way, without the devil's ingredient this dram might have scored some 87 to 88 points...

Pretty solid on caramel with an unexpected note of cognac. Vegetal, bay leaf, sage.

Beautiful intensity, without complexity. Alcohol well integrated.
    • Finish
      Bitter on the coffee.

I meet a guy just doing blends today. Nice focus! I join him in trying the Glencoe 8yo. I muse over how many stands one could visit to try only STR/Jim Swan-legacy whiskies. Quite a few as it turns out!

C: Very similar distillery character to both previous Ben Nevis 10’s. The abv puts this in between the 10 and the 10 CS vintage, those two extra years [and no grain] really paying off for the slightly older single malts. Having said that, this is a very decent malt-forward age-statement blend. All three would make quite a flight/set.

    Colour: amber.
Nose: fruits rottenness, ripe fruits, varnish, dried fruits, apricot, caramelised pears, oak and spices
Mouth: sweet, dried fruits, dryness, furniture varnish, chocolate and pepper.
Finish: long with spices, pepper, chocolate, dried fruits and dryness notes.
Glencoe is a very tasty and good balanced whisky. It’s strong and easy drinkable.

Yup, this is also a new bottle and yes hs305 is correct there is some sulphur in this one, perhaps water will tame it a little.
Water does indeed release a nice sweetness but the sulphur is still there and I am not sensitive to it either.
Don`t worry it is not ruined but the score is pegged because of it, not a patch on the old red label 100 proof.

Despite its high alcohol content, it does not sting, but it benefits from the addition of water and tolerates much of it. After some time in the glass or in the bottle, develop beautiful nutty sherry flavors. Reminiscent of the old bottling of 10-year-old Ben Nevis, but is more impetuous. A great blended malt that can easily compete with older and comparable priced single malts.
    • Nose
      85 85
Organic notes, sulfur, burnt rubber, ripe cheese (towards Gruyère), berries - very intense but not pungent troz 58%
    • Taste
      86 86
fruity "youthful" notes (reminiscent of Newmake), then darker with nutty sherry notes, tart berries - towards blackcurrant, dried fruit, typical Ben Nevis herbal tea notes - with water a little pepper
    • Finish
      86 86
medium to long with nutty sherry, dried fruit, berries and oak notes

There is still a youthfulness to this one, but there is also some solid maturation in it too. It's a bit on the bitter-sweet-floral side, so it may not be to everyone's liking. Of particular note, the finish is remarkably long-lasting. From my experience, water (~1 tsp to 30ml) does take down some of the alcohol burn on the nose and palate, and it makes it easier to pick out the nuances hiding behind it.
    • Nose
Yeasty malt, a touch of sea-salt, wood smoke with a bit of vegetal-herbal peat, oak and wood char, a light honey sweetness mixed with osmanthus blossoms, a touch of acetone, and white fruits (peaches and pears).
    • Taste
Oak and nutmeg mixed with orange peel, floral honey and mixed white fruit schnapps, and dark chocolate and malt
    • Finish
Dark chocolate covered espresso beans, dusty dry grains and dry jasmine green tea, and bitter honey and green oak tannins.

A beautiful barrel-strong Ben Nevis (just not), full of character and depth. I am curious to see what else besides Ben Nevis is in this setting.
