Whisky Reviews for Balblair 1990 AD

  1. MaltMartin scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

I have become a real fan of Balblair in the last couple of years. I like the complex fruity and silky character of the whisky.
    • Nose
Soft notes of sweet tropical fruit; melon, pineapple and papaya. Also pear and Granny Smith apples. Fresh cedar wood with some custard-like vanilla. Wet pine needles. Hints of crystalised violet as well.
    • Taste
Full and silky mouth texture. More on cherries and even strawberries now. Barley sugar. Buttery oak. Later followed by lemon pie and orange zest. Dried coconut and milk chocolate.
    • Finish
Medium long. Cinnamon. Ginger. Spearmint at the end. Well balanced.

    Tasting Notes by Adelphi;

1 of only 158 bottles from cask no. 739

Balblair is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland, and has recently been brought into a prominent role by its current owners, Inverhouse. From our records this is only the 2nd time we have bottled the make. A rich, deep golden colour thanks to an active ASB maturation, this is a complex dram. Walnut fudge drying to fruit cake with a lovely set, flowery honey nose. Apples, pears and dried apricots follow, finishing with a delicate hint of Palma violet and kiwi fruit. This perfume continues to the taste, now becoming more spicy with cinnamon and walnuts. Keeping it unreduced, the palate soon sweetens to marshmallow fudge with tinned fruit salad and melted marshmallows on the finish. A truly special pre-dinner whisky.

  4. St. Pauli scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

What was a brilliant nose, changed into a rather spicy and nutty whisky on the palate and finish. It's good whisky, yet this was an unexpected turn.
    • Nose
It's slightly sugared, like toffee, but doesn't have this burnt caramel taste. Further, it's sweet associated, with loads of tropical fruit (melon, mango, papaya), and apple. Vanilla is there too, along with polished oak. A hint of mint concludes the nose.
    • Taste
Not as sweet and expressive as I thought. It's even rather spicy and drying. Too long maturation? Anyway: orange and grapefruit zest, pepper, ginger and clove. It's faintly gassy as well, and a little malty. With water, it stays more elegant. Not overly fruity, slightly nutty (walnut), and still spicy.
    • Finish
Medium, and spicy on ginger, pepper, and clove. Otherwise, there is still the citrus zest and a hint of malt.

Easy drinking water is not needed. Better than many similar aged OB offerings.
    • Nose
A fruity floral nose but not particularly expressive. I mainly get melon and peach with a little pear.
    • Taste
Quite full on the palate on pineapple and cola cube sweets which I like, there is also cream and a little lemon.
    • Finish
Medium length on sherbet fizz with a slightly drying finish
