Bunnahabhain 28 yo 1989/2018 (42.1%, King's Court Whisky Society, 1st fill sherry butt, cask #23003) Five stars.

This by good guys in Harlem, in the flatlands. Colour: light amber. Nose: lovely tobacco and old walnuts, soy sauce, hardwoods, humidor, touch of hoisin sauce (fermented plum), then a dry spice mix, with cloves cinnamon, nutmeg and caraway. The notes of old leathery tobacco pouch in an antique shop are just superb. Mouth: indeed, some lovely nutty and tobacco-y notes singing in unison, while the choir would gather roasted chestnuts, coffee dregs, bitter oranges and just old oloroso. Notes of hoisin and miso in the background, that just always works. Finish: rather more on chocolate this time, as well as the usual walnuts and a few sour herbs. Oregano and tarragon? Comments: only the wee lack of power will prevent me from going over…

    SGP:462 - 90 points.

    Nose
Perfumed sherry nose - sweetish-tart, with wet wood, leather, tobacco and cinnamon. Curry spice and umami. Sticky-sweet and yet spicy-tart, a hint of honey-glazed spear ribs? hearty.
Caramel (with salt), toffee, raisins. Spicy dark forest honey. The tart notes are noticeably stronger than the sweet ones, and there's something slightly dirty. Old slightly dusty books in a library with leather interior.
The alcohol is well integrated, which should be the case with only 42%, but the dram still has a lot of power and volume. Here you can see that the many years in the barrel have done a great job. It almost looks like a concentrate of aromas. Oak is included, but not too much.

    taste
Soft, supple, extremely complex - this is where age shows its full effect. Still no alcohol to be felt. Furthermore, the spicy-tart sherry aromas - leather, tobacco, cinnamon and some oak and some wet wood. The spear ribs and the hint of smoke are now gone, the taste of the dram is absolutely smoke-free. The spicy forest honey comes out strongly, and the aromas of a spice shop of all kinds - all spices mixed. Some clove, laurel? Coffee, dark chocolate (but only slightly bitter). Wonderful complexity and still like a concentrate - so intense and sticky. Liquorice/liquorice is added towards the finish.

    departure
A slightly bitter layer remains on the tongue for a long time, lots of oak, lots of liquorice and lots of mixed spices. Slightly nutty maybe, walnut? Here again strong aromas of cinnamon and some caramel.

    Conclusion
A great, old-school sherry dram that has made the most of its long maturation period. That's the way it has to be, complexity, power, balance - everything is right here. You have to like the slight bitterness towards the end (liquorice/liquorice), but it is not dominant.
    Great sample - great malt!

    • Nose
Sherry, tobacco, cigar leaves and cigar boxes. Dried fruit, cloves, white pepper, nutmeg, cinnamon, leather, old books and a little bit of custard
    • Taste
Old sherry flavor, greasy, walnuts, cinnamon, pepper, cigar boxes, old wood, and orange peel. Maybe even a small tangerine peel. Furthermore, the smells from the nose are certainly recognizable here.
    • Finish
Spicy, old-fashioned sherry, walnuts and old books. The aftertaste is just too short to last a long time.

Very nice and fruity on the nose, the body is still very strong, fruity, some nice sour edge on it.
The finish is a little short and not as tastful as nos and body.
After all a very nice whisky.
