    Highland Park at its best! A masterpiece of whisky art. The Highland Park 1989 GM is a personal highlight for me in the Whisky year 2018. Recently I was allowed to try the Highland Park 1991 SV, this one from GM is an interesting counterpart. Although a refill butt, but the two years more in barrel compensate for this without the Brennereicharakter suffers. The HP is a very successful malt that combines sweetness, fruitiness, sherry, oak and spice. An absolute top malt, which gets an absolute buy recommendation from me. Interesting will be a direct comparison to the 1991 SV! 94 points from me for the first tasting.

      After about 15 minutes, I dare for the first time to shred Highland Park. Initially, the alcohol is quite present with its 57% and gives a slightly cooling sensation in the nose, which gives way immediately to a massive wall of oak flavors, sherry, sweetness, heather, honey and blood oranges. The spicy aromas easily prevail here, but overall the nose is very complex and the sweet-fruity aromas provide a wonderful counterpoint to the 29 years of seasoning from the barrel. The alcohol is more and more in the background and is after some Minutes to feel really strong. This also applies to the delicate, HP-typical smoke.

      But the 57% push it right! Powerful and at the same time creamy-oily, the Highland Park is on the tongue. You can directly feel how the salivation is stimulated and stick the sweet flavors of Nosings at the tip of the tongue. The slightly bitter aromas and the heather grow in the back of the mouth and the spicy aromas of the oak become more intense. There are hints of dark dark chocolate and espresso added. Now it becomes clear that this is a really old, mature whisky, which has a lot to tell: thanks to the refill butts, the barrel is not too dominant, so that the Highland Park typical Brennereicharakter is still clearly felt. All in all, there is a mix of sherry, sweetness, oak, blood orange, heather, leather and an old cigar box in the mouth, wonderfully worn by the 57% who are almost forgotten, as well as the almost imperceptible HP smoke. Superb!

      The finish is laaaaaaaaaaaaaang! It is very impressive, the long time the HP is present in the oral cavity. As with all the old sherry whiskys, the focus is on the sweet flavors that slowly give way to the spice and bitterness of the oak. If you stick your tongue along the cheeks, you will get an extra dose of blood oranges and sherry flavors. Slowly the heather and the cigar box as well as the old leather become noticeable again, also the espresso and the cocoa knock again. After a felt half eternity, the feeling in the mouth becomes weaker and requires another sip.

    Lots of time in the glass is recommended here, the Malt develops magnificently and gets better and better!
    An absolutely brilliant whisky !!

      Figs, dates, old balsamic vinegar, raisins, apricot jam, orange juice, a touch of black tea, nutmeg, heather, pipe tobacco, old tobacco box, old bookshelf, wild berries, honey, sour cherries
    • Taste
      Dark chocolate, raisins, dates, tobacco, leather, heather, black coffee, walnuts, creamy, oily, some caramel, also black pepper, oranges, honey
    • Finish
      Laaaaang, walnuts, lots of dark chocolate, coffee, in the finish I find now a hint of smoke that I did not have before, to orange scrub and English orange jam.

    takes a lot of time in the glass - 40min or more - to develop positively, only then the nose shows its full splendor

    It is very bitter on the palate - I still like it - but also drink my coffee black and like sage tea. If you are sensitive to bitter substances, the malt could be problematic - some of that is certainly too much.

    Overall, a very exciting drop, but you do not even need to get out of the bar, if you feel like an easily accessible dram or even little time.

      At first sour and reserved - probably. even a bit disappointing. (freshly uncorked)

      Already after 10 minutes in the glass a strong change. It is sweeter, dried dates and figs, honey, but at the same time an intense slightly biting balsamic acid, which seems to me very intense and lively - not exactly what I would have expected after almost 30 years of maturation - I have a slight alcohol bite again and again in the nose although I consider myself very tolerant.

      After more than 30 minutes he gets even sweeter. Shows sweet tobacco, nutmeg, passed blueberries, blackberries, a touch of raspberries, tendeziell rather sweet berries

      After the first sip he becomes oily, sweet, old wood, old cigar room furniture, very delicious berry cocktail, flowers, cut flowers, black tea, orange

      sweet and fruity, walnut shells, very dark chocolate, blueberries, pomegranate - especially the white cuticle, slightly dry, tannins, tannins, significantly tobacco, leather, it warms slightly and cools significantly - otherwise the alcohol is perfectly integrated on the palate.
      It combines very tart notes with fine fruitiness - reminds me of very dark chocolate (90% + cocoa content) with dried berries in it, espresso, cream, a touch of rose petals, rubbed wood

    Again, such a hype whisky :) how good is he? Can he really what?

    Prof_Dr_John, very good description, I can find myself very well in it.

    Class whisky from a non-dominant refill-butt of sweetness that combines fruit, sherry, oak and spice. Very complex, in the nose oak, sherry, sweetness, herbs and honey, which dominate spicy aromas. The alcohol is very well integrated for 57%. In the mouth again a mix of spicy aromas, oak, fruit and sweetness are now becoming more intense. Very long and present departure! The sweet flavors remain in the foreground, again mixed with seasoning and oak. Conclusion: Definitely one of the best new releases in 2018. If you get the opportunity, you should try it.

    Sherry! Really fat sherry rises directly into the nose. The alcohol is extremely well integrated for 57%. Cane sugar, sweetened oranges, raisins, honey, a certain saltiness is just imagination, because I know what I have in the glass, berryberry with a strong pointed lemon, blackberries and blueberries, now finally comes the oak after clear sherry whisky flavors , Milk chocolate, vanilla cream, gaaaaaanz delicate roasted aromas, all flavors are interspersed from the beginning / of heather aromas (yes, I know, HP = there must be heather in it, for me it is always a flowery note after detergent or freshly washed laundry, which I can later assign to the heather), in the second nose as expected, clearer vanilla, the nose is relatively unimpressed by the addition of water and remains at a high level quite unchanged

    sweet first and then with strong thumping, full in the mouth, here next to the baskets full of wild berries, the oak stands much clearer than in the nose as a counterpoint, powerfully pushes them with a bawdy bitterness and coffee aromas in the foreground and dominates afterwards, in the second Do not swallow so intensely with more sherry and sweetness, the malt would certainly tolerate water and reward this with more sweetness, sweetness, creaminess and balance.

    I rarely had a half-board with such a clear heather note, which also has to prevail here through the intense sherry and in the mouth against the strong barrel wort. The nice thing about it is that it adds complexity to the malt. It is less well-balanced, but has an interesting twist from sweet sherry to distinct barrel flavor and persistent heather. The flavors do not alternate but dominate each in their field. This changes with the addition of water, which brings significantly more flavor balance here without injecting too much intensity. Clear recommendation of water addition!

    What remains? A really successful but also intensive old HP. He is not solid and mild, as it is known from some ancient Malts, but very powerful. Therefore, no less exciting and varied. Almost 93 base points? That comes as always on the comparison and I would not want to verify because of the one-time testing.

    For a higher rating I still miss the balance, which is sacrificed here the intensity.

    • Nose
      Tough and oily streaks stick to the glass wall of my Premium Snifters, bright copper can already optically expect a pleasure experience. Creamy hazelnuts are in the air, toasted flavors gently dried fruit flavors, heather and dark meadow herbs dissolve from dark vanilla and caramelized sugar. Raisins combine with oranges, nut chocolate plays with a touch of espresso, hints of tobacco and leather end in roasted aromas, dark tangerines are refreshed by a pinch of peppermint, and above all lies the heather note typical of Highland Park. Cumbersome cling dark, dried and fruity sherry aromas with a wonderful wooden impact in the nose. Gorgeous, I want to finally feel the HP on the tongue!
    • Taste
      Creamy and mild, the Highland Park flows over the tongue, wooden sharpness and voluminous alcohol suddenly unfold on the tongue. A pinch of black pepper spreads on the palate, salt grains trickle on the tongue, creamy wood tones caress the cheeks inside. Spices and herbs show again, hints of hazelnuts and minimal resinous pine needles end in a pinch of leather and wet tobacco. Black, cold espresso dripping from the tip of the tongue, hints of grapefruit, menthol and mint refresh the palate and provide a harmonious counterpart to the dark fruit with your spicy log. Creamy blurring of taste and aftertaste.
    • Finish
      Powerfully warms the voluminous alcohol content of the throat and the palate. Dark berries follow with nuts and espresso, slowly the dominant "forest feeling" with resin, pine-rich and spicy wood comes back. The full-bodied spice and herbal note
      is also reflected in the aftertaste again. The mouthfeel becomes noticeably creamier and oily, the menthol-mint-note, which is initially in the background, becomes more dominant towards the end, balsamico rests on the tongue.

    A sensational drop, for me the best of 2018. In comparison with the Highland Park tasted 25 years 48.1% and with the Highland Park 27 SV 30th anniversary. For me of these 3 the best in smell (96 points), taste (94 points) and finish (94 points). Unfortunately the Singnatory drops a little bit because of its noticeable Schwelfelige note. The 25-year-old is great but unfortunately behind the other two.
    This one I can only recommend, super nose which after a long smell still reveals something ... which needs a lot of air to breathe and very good drinkable with wonderful long finish of both fruity, herbal and sweet as well as creamy and tobacco - oak elements Has. Perfect.

    A success of a Highland Park, that really combines the best of wood maturation with the excellent Highland Park spirit.
    • Nose
      Mature, rich and well-integrated, with hints of pipe tobacco, cinnamon, damp old wood, and decaying leafs. There's a clear layer of fruits, such as cranberries and blackcurrants. Slightly floral, with just a touch of milk chocolate and soy sauce.
    • Taste
      Yes, rather enticing. On the bitter side, with notes of espresso and cappuccino, accompanied by concentrated wood smoke. There's room for walnut skins too, leather and cured meat, with hints of rose petals and cherries.
    • Finish
      Dark chocolate, coffee and whispers of smoke. Long.

    The nose is awesome, on the palate he adds a punch. It follows a grand finish. The Malt is absolute class, the bitterness would not be out the back, I could also add one or maybe even two points. And yet: I am excited!
