If you have such a malt in your glass, you get the idea, that some whiskeys with 6-8 years, can not offer much more.
I am a big friend of the first three Spirit releases of Ardnamurchan.

The first impression is much milder than expected, the alcohol is holding back. Sweetness and fruit are dominant. The oak comes through, it smells a bit of polish. The youth shows through subtle metallic adhesive notes.
After a while, add the scent of fresh bread dough and a warm sherry scent.
Above all lies a wonderfully integrated peat. Very fine!

Fine, elegant start. For a year old already very skillful ;-)
It is a bit spiteful on the tongue, and the alcohol is very pleasant here as well. The fruit notes are restrained, but it is quite sweet and a cold smoke lies over it.
      I think it's almost too easy ....
    • Finish

Fine, uncomplicated finish. Not very complex, it has a pleasant sweet smoke ....

My rating reflects the fact that this is a young remarkable (not yet) whisky.

Fruity, cherries, berries, raisins, smoky, caramel. Exciting spirit.

Smoky, raisins, again cherries and berries, lots of sherry influences. Combines well with the smoke
    • Finish
      86 86
Medium finish with a lot of smoke. Not very complex.

    Sweet & Sour Peat Explosion

While the first release – 2016 AD – was only 2500 bottles strong and the second – 2017 AD – even less with 2477 bottles, for the third release Ardnamurchan released almost 5000 bottles. In this case, it’s spirit that matured on first fill sherry casks. I was very impressed with the first two spirits, as I recall. So expectations for this third release, bottled last year at 55.3%, are high.

Sweet and aromatic nose on dark fruit (rum raisins, dates) and nuts (both almonds and hazelnuts), as well as some clear hint of peach and pineapple. A bit of spices, but not overly much. Nutmeg and cinnamon. Some woodsmoke. Candied oranges, blueberries. It becomes a bit waxy, which is to my liking.

On the palate, the sweet fruit is immediately tackled by a big sweet and sour peat explosion. The spices of the wood are much more outspoken. I get sweet, bitter and salty notes. Bacon on the barbecue mixed with plum liqueur. Chili peppers. Very dry from the second sip forward.

In the very long, smoky and sweet-sour-bitter finish, the mouth is dried completely.

Good stuff. Let’s not forget that this is not yet whisky! Having said that, it’s the least of the three so far. The first – 2016 AD – remains my favorite.

A bit hard to rate, it is pleasant enough but it almost doesn't seem like Scotch. I wonder what I would make of it if I had tried it blind - I suspect I would have rated it a bit higher for being somewhat different, not sherry matured but more like a wine barrique finishing of a whisky. But I keep coming back in my mind to when I had the 2016 AD blind and was rather stunned that you could get this kind of profile after one year. In comparison, this just seems a bit undercooked.
    • Nose

quite a vinegary sherry; behind this would seem citric notes but it could be that vinegar again. Don't get me wrong it is not a bad smell just rather sharper than expected for sherry maturation
    • Taste
      83 83
odd, I am trying to think of some reference point like a sherry matured Glen Scotia; red wine notes, very grapy. The alcohol doesn't seem that high, but I have to consider I just had a 68+ whisky so things are bound to seem more dilute
    • Finish
      81 81
short->medium; not as dry as a cognac by a long stretch, but the finish has that back of the mouth and throat grip like a product from France

Rating a spirit on an 'adult' whisky scale feels a bit like grading a toddler on university marks, but this is definitely promising and already well drinkable. I like the fact that it is already hardly 'schnappsy' and that subtle peatiness is a trait that I like a lot.
    • Nose
Stones. Yes, very clearly stones. Goji berry and whiffs of fig and caramel. With water some gooseberry.
    • Taste
Hot, peppery and ashy. Goji berry, caramel. Subtle peat, getting stronger when adding water. It's quite harsh in the mouth without.
    • Finish
Gooseberry, smoke, blackberry, dark chocolate and caramel.
