  1. HammerHead scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

Tasted side by side with the 2005 Ledaig for Whisky in Leiden.

Quite a mild nose for a Ledaig. Yes, it's clearly peaty and very much vegetal, but lacks the burnt rubber and creosote of younger bottlings. I like this very much. Burning grasses and leaves, forest fire, scorched wood, earthy, a sweetness of baked apple, icing sugar, pancakes and some honey and vanilla. Also slightly meaty with black pepper.
    • Taste
      87 87
Very oily, also sweet and spicy. Dry peat smoke, burning hay, citussy, lemon, vanilla, fried pepper, ginger. Actually milder than expected, doesn't necessarily need water i.m.o.
    • Finish
      86 86
Very long: sweet citrus and vanilla, grassy, drying with charcoal and a tail end of bitter ashiness.

Needs some water to get the score up from 86 tot 88. It's just a bit too much without diluting. After diluting it's very good, you should try it!

elegant and woody on oud wood markers, rubber, nice minty freshness, eucalyptus
    • Taste
      85 85
spicy and linear, we lose the elegance promised by the nose, it's a shame. We would have liked to find this complexity. It lacks diversity in aromas.
    • Finish
      83 83
burnt rubber / tire, a little raw, which brings an unpleasant bitterness in the mouth. It lacks balance, fruitiness.

peaty and lemony humus, then the fruits become more present and I feel the notion of vanilla cream.
spices that attack the taste buds, less frank peat, a side of undifferentiated macerated fruits, woody too, the spices come back and warm the palate or the tongue here, a little bitterness at this time that mixes well with exotic fruits ( pineapple and lemon) and the more moderate peat.
lemony, peaty, a little creamy, which lasts, very pleasant and engaging.

Ledaig is one of the most outspoken whiskies I know. You always reckognize the whisky easily in both nose and taste. Till date it hardly let me down.

If you want to learn about Ledaig, do not start with this beast.

Great typical Ledaig nose. Earthy and spicy notes. A straight in your face smell. This one really requires some water.
    • Taste
      87 87
An explosion of spicy flavours. Even with water (more than a few drops), this is a full blown attack.
    • Finish
      87 87
Long and unbelievably dry. Spices change into bitterness in the final aftertaste.
