    ~Sancho~.

User Sophofo and I decided to have a small, yet complete, Poisonous Frog Series from The Daily Dram including the Christmas Ben Nevis. While doing so, we decided to give all frogs a fitting name.

    Orkney 2004 (WB119908) – Erwin the Frog
    Glenrothes 1997 (WB119905) - ~Sancho~

variety of chocolate, leather shoes, plums, tobacco, oranges, not bitter at all despite the colour, coffee, almond scrapings, grapes, red fruit, well marinated succulent meat.

in line with the nose, but with more cherries, tobacco, old leather, thick and sticky mouth feeling, more menthol too, cooling the taste.
    • Finish
      88 88
still menthol cherries, old wood, not bitter but intense coffee, dark chocolate

A fantastic example of a sherrybomb done right. I'm not saying spirit and cask are in perfect harmony, would be great, but the cask left an amazing impression and gets all my praise. Dried fruit, very heavy on chocolate, subtle spices and not too dry. This is almost at 'Glendronach glory days' level. If I really had to nitpick.. Yes, it could be a little more punchy but that's all. If you find one of these, buy it!

This has been an unusually good sherry cask. Chock-full of dried fruit, leather, tobacco and coffee. Not so much Glenrothes character though which is good in my case. I don't really like the abundance of spice in especially refill sherry Glenrothes. Let's write the details down, starting with the fruits: Orange, apricot, raisin, cherry and blueberry. Then we have dark chocolate, treacle, apple pie, cinnamon bun and toffee. Further on menthol, coffee, leather, tobacco, walnut, balsamic vinegar and some briny olives. Fantastic, oldskool nose encapsulating almost everything I want to see in a sherry dominated whisky. I'm in for a treat that's all I have to say.
    • Taste
It arrives a bit tart and with spice, although velvety soft in terms of alcohol burn. Could well be 40%. Anyways. There's orange, cherry, passion fruit, pineapple juice and raisin. Followed by dark chocolate brownie, toffee, nougat, manuka honey and cookie dough. Then there's coffee, leather, tobacco, cinnamon, oak and toothpaste/mint. It literally drinks as if there's no alcohol involved. Near perfect integration but I do miss a bit of punch though.
    • Finish
Unfortunately a lot shorter than I've hoped for (but still long). Blueberry, dark chocolate, mint, cappuccino, burnt sugar, sultana and old honey.

Really impressive dram. Tasted it, bought it the same minute.

The darkest chocolate I tasted in whisky in a long time. Hint of tobacco, spicy, sweet espresso. Very nice oily mouthfeel. All kinds of flavours keep showing up. Lovely.

A sherry bomb done to perfection. Most impressively, this never becomes drying and it retains enough complexity to stay interesting.
    • Nose
Soft and attractive, with a good chunk of dark chocolate, as well as rose petals, sweet oranges and cherry syrup. Heavily sherried—duh!—but not overpowering, which is an impressive balancing act. Subtle notes of shoe polish, leather and varnish.
    • Taste
The subtle spices (cinnamon, cloves) combine well the cocoa and notes of tobacco leaves. Syrupy and rich, with maraschino cherries and dried figs, as well as a hint of cappuccino.
    • Finish
      Lingering spices and dark chocolate.

Sherry bomb, but a bit different. It's not right in your face, but keeps building up and up. Superb dram.

Astonishing whisky. Very reach flavour and deep complexity. The best of the last daily dram series. A remarkeble glenrothes.
