    Sweet Butter
Along with the Yoichi Bourbon Wood Finish, Nikka also launched this Miyakikyo, which matured on bourbon casks as well.
Soft, sweet and ‘green’ on the nose. Think young twigs and buttercups. Some red fruit underneath. Pistacio. Quince. Lots of sweet butter. Hint of eucalyptus. Hardly any spices, bar some curcuma. But you have to work for it. This nose is fairly closed, but hand warmth helps.
Oh, on the palate, this is much better. Much more outspoken. Red fruit and woodsmoke come first, followed by mint, lime juice, pepper, licquorice and a touch of oak. Some oriental spices. Very nice!
    The finish is medium long.
Just a tad better than the bourbon matured Yoichi (but I do not score with half point), but unfortunately equally expensive. Around 180 to 200 EUR. That’s over the top. But what a lovely Japanese whisky.

All in all, this is not bad. However, I can't help but feel very disappointed that Yoichi and Miyagikyo are coming out with duds nowadays. These are pretty poor comparisons to what made them rather endearing a number of whisky fans. Yea, I know... no point reminiscing about the good old days.

A gentle fruitiness, again very subdued. I am trying this side by side with the Yoichi bourbon which was unimpressive.
    • Taste
      88 88
Fruity, sweet, vanilla-laden. Good mouthfeel, quite thick for 46%. I usually like Yoichi better than Miyagikyo but I think this time the latter is more delicious, at least as far as their bourbon finish 2018 are concerned. If I close my eyes, this can be a pretty good and balanced Irish.
    • Finish
      87 87
No off flavors. Not bad. Benign.

The bitterness is disturbing to the nose, much less in the mouth. It's drinking well, and it's greedy.
    • Nose
Green wood at first nose. Slight bitterness.
Light white flowers. A tiny bit of eucalyptus.
Light gooseberry. It does not speak much.
    • Taste
In the mouth it's much more fun.
Balanced successful between wood, red fruits and some licorice.
      Controlled acidity.
    • Finish
Finale on wood, pepper and strawberry.
