This is the one I would pick from the Yoichi/Miyagikyo sherry/bourbon wood finish bottlings from 2018. But to be honest, this has been a disappointing series, and definitely overpriced in the secondary market. Watered down, NAS, pricey. No thank you.

Quite a pleasant nose. Flowery. Some stone fruits such apricots, peaches, and plums. Mandarin oranges.

The sherry is more obvious here, but it's the soft gentle type. Very elegant. Ok mouthfeel and viscosity. Typical of Miyagikyo, this is balanced and pleasant. No off-notes. I did not detect any sulfur.

Benign, with lingering sweetness. Moderate length.

Much less well than in my memories of the live unfortunately.
    • Nose
      Slightly sulfurous.
Strawberry, wood, leather. It's pretty simple.
      Very light camphor.
    • Taste
In the mouth we are on the leather, a bit of undergrowth and a big dose of red fruits (strawberries, cherries). We have some rubber following the match of the nose.
A little sweet syrup, caramel. It's greedy.
    • Finish
      Finale on wood, pepper, rubber.

Joa, had expected something more in the voices here and there Miyagikyo is my favorite, still active Japan Distillery, but he is too meek and not enough Miya for me.
    • Nose
Musty, dusty shelves, many nuts, hazelnut, walnut, trail mix, apricot, dark toffee, some dried plum
    • Taste
Peach, cognac-like, raisins, dark toffee, red apple coated with honey, fine oak, cocoa, sweet leather, rum-raisins, gingerbread, already clear modern sherry
    • Finish
Dried peach and plum, musty wood and dust, medium length

When Nikka launched its Yoichi NAS on sherry wood, the same happened with sister distillery Miyagikyo. This whisky received a long finish on sherry casks and has a stunning color.
Dark & sweet, creamy like butterscotch and plums, espresso with milk foam and chocolate shavings, strawberry on steroids and camphor. Some menthol. Mildly burnt caramel. Hazelnuts. A candle on the window sill. Marmalade of forrest fruit. Woodsmoke. Hint of rubber in the background Leather. Complex! I am a fan!
Nicely oily, almost creamy on the palate. Red fruit arrives first (red berries and strawberries), followed by leather, woodsmoke and a good dose of sugar. Leather and moss creep in, but pear drops and cassis keep it nicely sweet. Cloves and saffron, more woodsmoke and licquorice give it depth. This is truly flabbergasting.
The finish reminds me of the better Italian coffee with a good dose of pear drops in it. Strange combination if you read it like this, but trust me – it is very good.
Absolute top dram! Priced around 180 to 200 EUR like its bourbon brother which is actually too much for what you get, but having said that, you do get a real Japanese whisky from the top shelf! And if you are in doubt between the Yoichi and this Miyagikyo, go for the latter. It’s the best of all four.
