Tried this side by side with the older "Sherry & Sweet" 12 year old at 55%. This NAS sherry finish definitely cannot compare to the older bottling, and it's not like the S&S is that great to begin with! :( That's a sad face.

Not the oily, deep, peaty, oaky whisky Yoichi can be known for, but this is certainly pleasant enough. I do unfortunately detect just a bit of sulfur. Not egregious by any means, but it's there. I've never detected sulfur in any other Yoichis. I do wonder if the casks they are using are no longer top notch, even if I realize that this bottling is not meant to be anything more than a gimmick for folks that think they enjoy anything Japanese. Sigh... I'm just reminiscing again. Sorry.

Again, the taste is quite pleasant and sweet. Not complex. Not great. Just nice. Mouthfeel is on the thinner side.

Moderate length, metallic finish, lingering sweetness, and again, quite simple. I quite like this whisky, and if it's $100 bucks, I may give it a shot... Maybe. This isn't as good as a your basic Talisker 10 probably, which cost $60. Actually, I'll probably not pay $100 for it. There!

H2H tasting, favourite to least favourite:
    1) Miyagikyo bourbon wood
    2) Yoichi sherry wood
    3) Miyagikyo sherry wood
    4) Yoichi bourbon wood

Very similar concept between the distilleries concerning cask management: The bourbon wood go in the concentrated fresh fruity direction, while the sherries are in an old-school oily, leathery oloroso stile. Not unlike my memories of the Yamazaki 18yo, not nearly as complex, balanced or intense, however.

  9. Highlander65 scored this whisky 80 points Expert Senior

It is not the classic Yoichi Single Malt, but the sherry-finished version, which I expect richer and rounder.
A great malt, in the sign of the Scottish tradition that had so impressed the good Masataka
    • Nose
As soon as I bring the glass to the nose I perceive a strong and decisive character, with prevailing peat, red fruit, chocolate and custard.
    • Taste
The mouth feels a fresh and light body, the peat is very pronounced, as well as a clear saline note. It is a true island whisky, it also feels a little pepper. I would say an Islay style
    • Finish
The finish is long, with a hint of lemon

  10. YuraLM scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

Light saturated, quiet simple, not developing in glass. Too short maturation
    • Nose
vanilla, toffee, honey notes, sugar powder, cherry wine. At the end smoky plum
    • Taste
Light bitter, light species, cherry wine, light saturated.
    • Finish
Long lasting, species, cherry wine, light woodness.

  11. LiquidThoughts scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

I like it better than I thought, I'm not the Yoichi fan otherwise, it could have been a bit smoother for me.
    • Nose
Cherry, dates, red gummy bears, licorice, oregano, beautiful sherry tones, currants, camphor, dried fruit with honey-based, crisp malt
    • Taste
Flambé orange, cherry, herbs, roiboos, hazelnut, chestnut, beautiful fruity-kräutrig, light charred oak note, less than other Yoichis, tobacco and some plum
    • Finish
Medium to long, dry, herbs, bitter orange, a little teen, pleasant

    Capital G
Nikka is out of mature stocks of its award winning Yoichi and hence took all whisky with age statement of the market. Until they have stocks that have reached a respectable age again, we have to make do with NAS releases. This Yoichi was finished on sherry casks casks.
Very aromatic yet straightforward nose on dark fruit (think plums, raisin and dates) with caramel and honey and some sugared orange peel. Some camphor and saffron. Honeysweet with an oriental edge. I love it already.
Somewhat oily, but again very, very sweet. Pear drops, tobacco, plums and then a fantastic trace of woodsmoke that gives it quite some depth. Yes… this is Good with capital G. Nice touches of oak (I even recognize some mizunara), oriental spices and leather. Grand.
The finish is long, somewhat drying and nicely seasoned. Woodsmoke has the final word.
Boy, oh boy… this is so Good. NAS? Yep. Do we care? Nope. It is priced exactly the same as the bourbon matured version, i.e. 180 to 200 EUR. Too much for what it is, but very good indeed.

It's a bit annoying on the nose, but on the palate it's nice.
    Still very simple.
    • Nose
Nose on camphor, fruit wrapped with sugar
    • Taste
In the mouth it is sweet, light.
      Pretty noble wood with chocolate.
      A little fruit syrup.
      Leather, light under wood.
    • Finish
      Finale on chocolate, fruit. Camphor.
