This 19 year old Ledaig matured for 6 years in traditional oak barrels, then transferred to Sherry Oloroso barrels for 13 years in the summer of 2004.

It has a first nose on burnt wood, on an earthy peat. A barbecue smoke is essential thereafter. It is more complex than the Amontillado Finish presented yesterday. I finally perceive some notes of leather and cardboard.

The palate is fat, sublime. On spicy (vanilla, cinnamon) and caramelized notes. I find yogurt cake and nice notes of apple over the tasting. Before swallowing, I pick up some dried fruit.

The finish is of a good length, as magnificent as the mouth, where aromas of wood, dried fruits and coconut follow one another.

This Ledaig with an amber color with golden reflections is another wonderful single malt. I couldn't have asked for a better entry point for this review series.

Earthy peat smoke, old rubber tyres, butter, salted caramel, some toffee, walnuts, almonds, rosemary, a bit of moldiness (not to the extent of decaying vegetation, but more subtle like a moist attic), sultana raisins, plum, oranges, peppery spiciness.
    • Taste
      89 89
A creamy mouthfeel, burnt twigs, mildly ashy, a pleasant sherry sweetness, syrupy, dried apricots, a distant peach note, black liquorice, black pepper
    • Finish
      89 89
Quite long: camp fire smoke, scorched wood, a juicy fruitiness, nutty, salted black liquorice.

In itself a delicious and sedate Ledaig. The Oloroso barrel fits perfectly, only the slightly missing punch and the too bitter finish prevent a higher rating. But it doesn't always have to be cask strength

very nice, especially the palate is rich with fruity flavours, ashes and smoke.. the nose is also nice and typical ledaig-ian, with after-rain earth, peat, smoke and freshly squeezed lemons (peaches, too).. but they are both a bit too thin.. not to mention the missing punch in the finish that takes a bitter turn that puts a damper on a rather bright experience.

Ledaig would really benefit from raising the abv of their ob’s.. i dream of an anual 12CS from the house of Tobermory..

It's smoother than the 18YO (compared to Batch 3), not the sulphur of that one.
    • Nose
      Cranberry, salted caramel, peat, liquorice
    • Taste
Peat, gingerbread, salmiak, pepper and herbs.
    • Finish
Peat, salmiak, salted caramel and blueberry.

Very pleasant Ledaig expression. I have not been able to taste this one h2h with the 18y OB, but I believe this one goes in the same direction in terms if quality, nose and taste.

Of course there are the typical Ledaig flavors which you reckognize from a mile distance. I do think however that the 19y is a bit fresher in both nose and taste. But who cares. This one is briliant as well.
