    Rye

About two years ago, I was pleasantly surprised with the 9 Year Old single grain distilled from rye and malt from the Belgian Braeckman Distillers. The release was then lead by whisky shop Dram242 from Belgium. That was single cask 75. In September 2018 Braeckman released sister cask 76 – in honor of their 100th anniversary, for they were founded in 1918 – with a slightly higher ABV of 65.3%. The first fill bourbon cask yielded 239 half liter bottles.

On the nose, this is an identical twin. Brown bread, vanilla, liquorice, praline chocolate, rye and a handful of nuts. Nice rye spiciness. Then evolves towards bourbon notes, but with a soft touch of silver polish. It’s all good.

Quite creamy and surprisingly soft upon arrival, but that quickly changes once it has settled on your palate. Feisty to piquant, even. Nutmeg, chili pepper and liquorice. Not very fruit, but very good nonetheless. Nuts, vanilla, butterscotch and a hint of nougat. All the way in the back I find some popcorn and a hint of wood glue. Good stuff.

The finish last forever and keeps the mouth warm at first, but then completely dry.

Good grain in which the rye plays the lead. Top dram.Rye
