Whisky Reviews for Bunnahabhain 1988 Wy

A beautiful, set, mature and polished Bunna.
A classic "armchair" malt. Nice, quite complex nose, in the mouth not quite on the level, could also use a little more power.
    • Nose
      90 90
Honed, set and matured with dignity.
Sea breeze, tobacco, leather, Danish pastries (custard and light fruits). Peach, banana.
    • Taste
      88 88
Starts round and soft, fine spices, silky.
Delicate sweetness. Concentrated. Malty, kelp. Spicy and polished.
    • Finish
      89 89
Maritime notes, leather, fine spices again, malty.
Good length, very polished and balanced.

not what I expect from a Bunna from the era, I would be blind at a 1990 exBC Bladnoch or the Glen Allachie 25, he does not do anything wrong - but for his price league he can clearly not enough for me, the flavor profile is interchangeable and quite one-sided and does not meet my taste - the very intense citrus note gets on my nerves already after a dram :) that reminds me very much of Allachie 18
    • Nose
      87 87
fresh lemon on yoghurt, delicate waxy notes, very creamy, tree juice and fresh mountain herbs, a bit grassy, vanilla, honey elderflowers - delicate salt notes, no peat, mild and round as far as the alcoholic notes are concerned
    • Taste
      87 87
Lemon, lemon, lemon Lemon, lemon Lemon, .. Lemon cream, citrus zests, cream yoghurt, birch water - at first nicely bound alcohol, a lot of mint, he stays longer in the mouth he is already tickling something on the tongue
    • Finish
      86 86
herbaceous, restrained spicy, vegetable broth with leeks and celery, lemon peel, grapefruit peel, borderline bitterness, as there is hardly any sweetness - pepper, glue, citrus oil, furniture polish in the then quite long finish

Whilst a large focus at the Wemyss stand this year was on their 'just-out’ Kingsbarns single malt whisky, Peter [the distillery manager] allows me to try the Wemyss treasures that lie below. Two well-aged Bunna’s no less.

C: Wowee, I might have to buy a bottle on the nose alone - it’s mad-good! On the palate it’s simply very decent mature whisky. Great price too! [£199 April ’19]
