Whisky Reviews for Speyburn 16-year-old

2 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 82.50 points

  1. Bomshanka scored this whisky 85 points Expert Junior

Speyburn has recently upped their game and are putting out whisky at 46% abv, uncoloured and non-chill filtered, and mostly with age statements as well. This new 16 year old is no exception and it comes in a generous 1 liter bottle and can be found at very reasonable prices in certain travel retail outlets.

    Colour warm gold.
Not terribly oily with thin fast legs.

Honey, freshly cut oak wood, yeasty dough, then some fruit appear, citrus, green apples, peach, melon and finally a slight hint of anise. After a bit in the glass floral notes begin to appear.
    • Taste
      85 85
Creamy sweet honey and lemon custard. Bit of bread underneath with some dried banana, apple and apricot. A slight undertone of something anisey, licorishy, but doused in honey and then a bit of pepper and chili with a mineralic component.
    • Finish
      83 83
Sweetly drying towards spices and slight oaky influence. Medium in length.

All in all a well made, pleasant if not very spectacular, every day sipper.

  2. Xaver did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

Personally too dry and bitter. Since the spirits will divorce.
The percent fits great. Otherwise the alcohol would be too powerful.
    • Nose
      Shiny gold

The first thing that comes to mind is honey and dry wood. Then slowly the light-fruited aromas passed through. Apricots, subtle pear, unripe peach and some honeydew melon. A somehow dry, flowery note joins.
With some time in the glass, something comes through that reminds me of lye. The colleague is developing more and more in the dry direction. The alcohol is very back. A subtle spice accompanies the flavors.
    • Taste
Very spicy start. Even some alcohol. I would not have expected that in 43%. Unripe fruit aroma. In the taste then rather mirabelle. Reminds me a bit of sea buckthorn jam. Honey comes through only after the sharpness is gone. Then cereals, herbs and neat bitterness.
    • Finish
Rather long. Seasoning and bitterness before it ends sweetly.
