This Highland Park is an exellent old style Traditional Scotch that has almost nothing in common with today's engineered younger HP releases that rather go for cheap thrills instead of quality and lasting impressions. This one I will certainly remember even in years from now (given my brain sticks it out) when the Fire's are all extinguished and the Ice's are molten...
The colour is pale straw and the nose offers a delicious and impressive sweet profile on lots of different fruits, summer flowers, heather honey, beeswax, mineral aromas and some fine OBFs. All very balanced and certainly without any off-note, I really like to sniff such a profile!
The taste is layered with the fruits show up first, followed by the honeys and sugars before the spices and herbs kick in to form a counterpart to first sweet impression. Some very tasty wooden notes come late but with pride and all together form a harmonic grande finale. This is a great movie on my palate and it is very, very quaffable...
The whisky arrives warming and nicely coating in the mouth with no distracting moments. The finish is of medium length and without any flaws or distracting feelings either. The spices and some firm but very appropriate wooden notes drive it a little away from its sweet core which is perfect to avoid "high-level boredom". Water is not needed.
