Tamworth had been such a beautiful girl. Slaughtered, salted, and hung air dried in the backyard olive tree for the last 8 months, she was now presented in wafer thin slices, nestled on a bed of the plumpest moist sultanas. A haphazard stack of buttered digestive biscuits to one side. A nasal delight snuffled greedily for the first half an hour as the afternoon sun gently warmed the plate.

Some fruits were brought out to balance the palate: stewed apple and pear, lightly dusted with cinnamon. Home-made Damson Plum Jam to grace the biscuits. Accompanied by a small intense shot glass of cold pressed sun ripened blackcurrants, reduced almost to the point of syrup.

My hearts desires satiated beyond my wildest expectations, I sat back and cleansed my palate with a light peppermint and green tea, before greedily repeating the gastronomic delight in delirious cycles until the plate lay barren.

That one so young could attain such beauty. Can it ever be repeated I ask myself, whilst looking forward to next years pig.

Inchgower, Cadenhead, 56.5%. One ex-bourbon hogshead for 6yrs finished with 3ys ex-sherry, the other hogshead 8yrs in ex-bourbon followed by 1yr in ex-sherry, coming together for a marriage made in heaven at 9yo. Neither the bourbon or the sherry dominating, a perfect balance with many layered strata. The colour alone indicates some quality casks along the line. I’m not normally one for finishes, but this has made me swallow my pride and given me an itch for the Inchgower.

And so economical, a shining example of Independent mastery over pedestrian Official offerings. Magnificent, thanks Cadenhead.

Many thanks to John Sherlock of Regional Wines not only for bringing it to my attention, but also for being being such an exemplar of flights of fancy. Sláinte.

A nice Inchgower, the profile isn’t exactly my sweetspot but I can recognize it’s quality. The sherry barrel delivered nice forest fruit sweetness and spices to the Inchgower profile. However it’s young and that together with the higher abv is felt.

A nice typical herbal/spiced orientated Inchgower. I like that style quite a lot. It can handle a decent amount of water.
    • Nose
Inchgower is often on the herbal/spicy side, this is no exception. Without water it’s rather closed. Needs more then a few drops to open up. Dried herbs, a wee salty and Antique wooden furtiture at first. When adding water still mild spices. Orange peel shows up as well as a nice sweet layer of grenadine syrup/lemonade. There is also a very delicate dry freshness joining the nose which I would say reminds me of oregano.
    • Taste
Without water it feels quite stiff and led by alcohol. It improves a lot with water (quite a lot). It gets more sophisticated, balanced and outspoken. Mild peppermix and raspberry. I like it!
    • Finish
Rather short without adding water. With water it gets to medium length. Soft and silky. Mild spices, a trace of cherries and again that grenadine syrup/lemonade at the very end.

Had this one again today together with a great cigar! Great combination! The Inchgower acts way more mature then it actually is. This bottling could have been left inside the bourbon cask and after that for a longer period in the sherry hogsheads as well. Some more age would have made this one a real cracker. But despite of the short period of maturation this whisky is a delight!

The initial alcohol burst, but behind there is a clear sherry influenced whisky. A lot of decent red fruit aroma's and a touch of citrus. There is a freshness note on the side, which I cannot completely describe.
With water: Still a bit restless, but in a good way. There is some fudge, some hay and on top of that a clear layer of the sherry cask.
    • Taste
      88 88
Without water, it gives a sweet and sour burst, but the sour ripe citrus notes take over. Some ginger notes too.
With water: A very good balanced sweet and sherried dram. Young, but good! A good balance between spirit and wood influence!
    • Finish
      87 87
Short-medium length. A rather creamy finish. Some fudge and butterscotch with some hints of the sherry cask.
With water: Quite similar although the finish gets a bit longer.

Cadenhead bottlings are normally at their best above let's say 15 years. Bottled at lower age, they are normally only fairly good; not excellent. This Inchgower is an exception; at least for me.
Normally during summer I prefer whisky on bourbon casks, but this is a good alternative for this time's a year.

Very, very nice. The sherry is well integrated. Not dominant at all. Smells at least for me older then 12 years.
    • Taste
      87 87
Again, the sherry is not dominant. Slight taste of pepper; somewhat spicy. Fruits allover the place.
    • Finish
      85 85
The finish is the weakest part. When adding water it goes from short to medium long. Pepper and spices remain till the very end.
