Bunnahabhain 27 yo (48.4%, The Single Malts Of Scotland ‘Marriage’, 2018)
A rather lovely looking bottling from the folks at Elixir Distillers (TWE), which is a marriage of four casks spanning three different vintages. As we often point out on these pages, the sum of two or three casks together often tends to be better than the individual component parts. Colour: light gold. Nose: fresh fruits and coastal greenery. Very ‘Bunnahabhain’, which is a great asset here. Unfolds with these notes of fragrant sandalwood and wee touches of kelp and green olives. Some sunflower oil as well, very light leather notes and some waxy lemon peel. A few hints of green pepper and freshly sawn wood add a little bite, although they’re rather restrained. Mouth: superb fruitiness, lusciously waxy, salty, slightly mushroomy and earthy, some petrichor, more sandalwood, little resinous touches, spices and things like gorse, soft ointments and salted mead. The nose suggested softness but this is in fact rather punchy and textural on the palate. Really excellent. Finish: long and full of these slightly saline, leathery and wood spice notes. Hints of liquorice, mint tea, citrus peels and a touch of herbal cough medicine. Comments: why the owners wouldn’t issue such bottlings is a bit bewildering really. This simple combination of Bunna in refill casks and time is such a winner. The mix of fruits, freshness, the right amount of bite from the wood and coastal character is pretty irrefutable. Great work by Elixir Distillers.

As only visible traces of Bunnahabhain, this is a delicious malt in which the Bourbon Cask influence predominates. Almost TOO round and beautiful. Still superb.

A juicy, mild impression of sweet mirabelle plums, apricots and clementines with delicate almond tart flavors. A hint of lemon and marzipan lies over everything, as does an almost Clynelish-like coastal character with wet rocks and all the sea salt.
Honey, I like you very much! :)
    • Taste
      90 90
Holla, elderberry syrup, very smooth. Full of the lively fruit tones that were already on the nose, as well as some Moroccan mint and homemade vanilla sugar. At the same time fruity and spicy, slightly dark caramel.

Gentle and long - the wood is noticeable, but very harmonious and, over time, moves more towards unsweetened grapefruit and freshly waxed oak planks.

As it was told to me, this is a vatting of 5 vintage casks consisting of 2x 1989, 2x1990 and 1x 1990 - married together for 6 weeks.

N: We have all the fruits!
T: Wow, this kicks on with a fruity spongey depth and a seasoned saltiness.
    F: A malty >putty >salty chew, a touch dry & winey.
C: It’s been some time coming, but if you persevere with Bunna, you will eventually find a gem or two.

    Scores an A-

strong vanilla and orange blossoms up-front.. honey on fresh toast.. a resinous, oily, woody, smoky uber-combination that is just spectacular.. camphor and eucalyptus to pull it back up..

peach and citrus.. the spirit is clear, clean and crisp.. sweet licorice and ripe banana.. a combination of old Clynelish and young Springbank.. pickled green tomatoes and cinnamon.. it never gets boring!

    In store sample.

Got a chance to try this in store. A couple of very nice reviews from trusted sources had me very excited..

...But, it did not live up to the hype, in my opinion. A shame, but what a blessing to be able to try it first.

The nose is heavily vanilla driven with some sandalwood. Any tropical notes are extremely subdued. Some nice runny honey and floral tones. I spent the time warming it up and the nose simply never opened up for me.

Things get much better here, with a full rich mouthfeel. French vanilla, juicy, nice soft fruits. Peach, subtle kiwi, honeydew, and a fair amount of honey.

A rather brief, but pleasant finish with more vanilla, a drop of honey, fresh cut oak, subtle fruits and mild spice.

    Tasted in the living room.

Very round, delicately hazelnut, finesse, pastry accents.

On the palate, very mellow, thick, little lack of explosivity and aromatic.
Final very sweet. Wise, maybe too much.

    Nose 4/5
    Mouth and finish 3/5

elixir for a 27 year old bunna!
    • Nose
      smoke, malty sweetness,
fruits on slightly cooked citrus fruits
      sweet spices
    • Taste
a nectar, a sweetness in the mouth, the peat is creamy, the smoke back comes off and amplifies the scents with iodine present
the fruits are varied for me, more on the citrus fruit anyway with a scent of jam!
iodine comes back in the back of the mouth, as well as some wet wood
    • Finish
long, on peat, wood, iodine and cooked fruits, it's ... a nectar
