    For too long, I no longer had the DE of Caol Ila in my glass. The last one will probably have been the 2015er. Very relaxed Islay whisky, already a classic. Extremely good to drink with its 43%.
    • Nose
      Mild smoke, fruity-spicy. At the beginning, the smoke note is little to make out, rather only as a companion to the other flavors. Raisins, grapes, wild berries, marjoram, savory, pepper. Beautiful interwoven contrarian aromas.
    • Taste
      Smooth onset with dry smoke, flavored with grapes, raisins, blackberry leaves. In addition fresh wood shavings, vanilla, malt, milk coffee, milk chocolate. Later, cinnamon and sea salt are added.
    • Finish
      Medium long, dry, spicy. Lovage, grapes, milk chocolate. A little more sweetness, but the smoke is already dominant, much stronger than at the beginning.

    1494) Caol Ila, 2006, Bottled 2018, C-si; 5-478, The Distillers Edition
    Same as 4-477 that released in 2017, also distilled on 2006, but spent another year on ageing.

      N- Hmmm... with reference to the 4-477, did they relocate all casks next to a oyster shells dump site, or accidentally dropped a dozen of oyster shells thru the bung hole to those Moscatel casks selected for this 5-478 and aged it a year more? (Of course they can't do so, don't be silly) This is smelly, fishy and utterly dirty, and i meant this with compliments, and how an Islay-er should be. Hearthy sea smoked with tinge of salty sweet liquorice and plenty of burning wet reeds. (89/22)
    • Taste
      85 85
      P- Flow of sweet ripe exotic fruits, spicy maritime smokes. Bonfire and savoury barbecued umami-ness and spicy fish sauce. (87/21)
    • Finish
      85 85
      F- Medium, creamy finish with plenty of fire left at the back of throat. (86/20)

      B/B- 87/21 My preference on Islay-er should go either to extra clean or extra dirty, that's no point to stay at the middle lane, so this dripping dirty naster fit the bill well.

      Weighted Rate- 84pt

    A really successful Caol Ila - the Moscatel sherry finish is good for him - presumably that's where the intense, aromatic sweetness comes from - but you don't have the "otherwise known sherry flavors"!
    I find him better than the 18 year old !!!
    Price / performance = ok!
    • Nose
      sweet wood smoke, sweetness, fresh citrus, lemon, maritime, salty;
    • Taste
      strong oily appearance, fruity sweetness, fine smoke, malt, lime, lemonade, salt, pepper, also oak, quite complex;
    • Finish
      medium length and sweet (vanilla), peppery dry fading;

    Great whisky for every day. One minus - it quickly fizzles out.

  7. Issie did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

    • Nose
      Also warmer smoke, lemon, honey, a few strawberries, in the background a few grasses, a bit cinnamon, minimal earth
    • Taste
      Honey, cereals, light strawberries, lemon, grapefruit, some pepper, the smoke is surprisingly weak, but goes well with the rest

    Caol Ila Distillers Edition 2018 in direct comparison with the 12er.

    Nose:
    The Distillers Edition is much sweeter in the nose, with a strong impact of apricot, mirabelle and quince. Nevertheless, unmistakably Caol Ila with strong maritime impact, mussels and oysters. Citrus fruits and apples are there, but they hide behind the sweetness.

    Mouth:
    Also in the mouth the Distillers Edition sweet, again yellow fleshy fruits, a little peach. Strong salt notes and ash are the link between both malts.

    Finish:
    In the finish, the two are the most similar, the sweetness of the Distillers Edition is here behind ash and oak spice the second fiddle.

    Conclusion:
    The Distillers Edition rounds out the 12 year olds, which are a little bit more rambunctious, adding beautiful and interesting components without distorting the distilling character too much. Tastes even better than the 2014 Distillers Edition.

    First, the impression of snorting a rail of cold ash. Then iodine, salt, caramel, red fruits and leather as in any self-respecting sherry. Insisting, some white fruits, grapes, candied lemon and mirabelle plum, which undoubtedly come from the finish in Moscatel barrels. The smoke serves as a binder.
    In the mouth, it is suave, woody and mellow, fresh, the peat is barely felt, it is very fruity, vanilla, citrus, orange and grapefruit. The ash returns on the finish, which is very long, carbonaceous, dark chocolate and smoky. We really smell white wine in the retro-olfaction, it's sweet like Sauternes, a little more would be too much. But this is perfect.
