[October, 2018] After a very disappointing tasting at Aberlour I went for Aberfeldy to sooth my (whisky) pain but here the distillery exclusive "fill your own" bottle was even worse! Again for the first time, they offered great quality in the past (at least the few times I have been there so far)…

The only thoughts that came to my mind after tasting this dram were: Are they crazy and think customers will buy any whisky anyhow these days? Or are they that cheeky to offer a bad quality at a very high price and hope the visitors will never open the bottles? Or maybe is my taste that far away from the mainstream whisky drinkers taste, nowadays? I think the whisky bubble is about to burst very soon...
    • Nose
      83 83
The nose is quite shy first and offers some floral, fruity and barley sugary aromas that leave no lasting impression. After some breathing time and a little water added nice old-style toffee and honey notes pop up but still this nose is rather unimpressive...
    • Taste
      76 76
The taste is unpleasantly bitter with a touch of aspirin besides the bitter tannins and herbs. This profile is very simple and with a disgusting astringent feeling (plastics). Later some shy spices and sugars pop up. Water turns the palate a little better but still there is no motivation to swallow this stuff.
    • Finish
      77 77
The initial mouthfeel is hot, bitter-astringent and not a little bit coating at all - this is pretty bad! The finish repeats the unpleasant flavours of liquid aspirin and plastics until its end. Sorry, this dram is disgusting according to my taste buds...

Tasted and bought this Aberfeldy after a Tour of the Distillery. It was my opinion with big distance the best Whisky at the Distillery together with the sample straight from the cask in the former warehouse (which was a sherry hogsheads from 1999). The nose is very pleasant an complex mix of almonds, herbs and wood. The palate is malty with lots of vanilla. I liked it, because it seems to be a pure bourbon cask expression amongst the mostly sherry cask bottled single cask Aberfeldy.
