[October, 2018] I had the standard four dram Aberlour tasting after the distillery tour and for the first time in my (whisky) life I was disappointed with that. Not just that the drams were no drams at all (according to the most popular Scottish definition: A dram is a measure of an enjoyable size - but this tiny sip was way too small) but the quality of all four whiskies was rather below-average (according to Aberlour standards).

This "a'bunadh" batch is the worst I had so far: It is slightly sulphur-spoiled, the sherry seems not integrated with the whisky at all and the whole dram delivers an immature and unbalanced profile that is not to my liking. The finish is quite drying on tannins and papers. This definitely is not worth buying, I rather go for older a'bunadh releases instead!

After a careful approximation with the nose - a surprise: there is no attack on the mucous membranes but fragrant fully ripe cherries with vanilla cream and other sweet fruit flavors caress them; it is less the usual dried fruit, but juicy and fully ripe fruit.
In the overall picture of the flavors Batch # 63 presents itself as not particularly complex but as thoroughly harmonious and extremely supple and pleasing. The 61% alcohol is present in the nose but well integrated.

But the inauguration in the mouth in undiluted form is quite brutal - fire water in the truest sense of the word. The subtler flavors are swept aside in the heat wave of the alcohol detonation.
With a little water he behaves much tamer, without losing much volume: a persistently sweet impression on the tongue with licorice and herbal liqueur underlaid with oak notes in the direction of dark chocolate. The smell perception widened with water around spicy-tart tones of roasting substances and gravy.

The finish is long, warm, dry and with a reverberation of bitter herbs slowly ebbing.

Nice, but I wouldn't recommend this at anywhere near the current prices. This worth max £40.

      (with approx 5ml water added)
Dry fruits: raisin, fig, date. Christmas pudding.

Slightly phenolic, minty, herbal notes. Strong date/fig note from the sherry casks. Sweet with underlying savoury notes. Slight salinity.

Lingering fruit cake and Oloroso notes. Long, alcohol well integrated with little burn (bearing in mind water added). Not amazingly complex but memorable and warm.

The strong point of this malt is its aroma, soft, friendly, sherry, overripe fruit. But the taste is prickly, harsh ... The aftertaste lasts in the mouth .... As always, I don't give a high score to sherry. Not my type. There were already basic releases, and aged ... and barrel releases and from bottlers, not that ...

It leveled in the forehead, with Dronach KS 8th batch, drones in the aroma are more modest, but the drinkability balance is definitely higher.

Very good in terms of value for money, even though I've had better A’bunadh. Full review (german): https://keinehalbendrinks.de/2020/09/01/mehr-speyside-im-glas/

As usual very good, still affordable. However, I have heard that the price has risen sharply on the upcoming batch, unfortunately.
