Great bottling. Not a sherry bomb, but a savory and sweet sherry complexity which is really palatable. An expensive bottle at € 140 for a 16 year old, but worth the money in my opinion.
    • Nose
      90 90
Full bodied sherry, savory, creamy and very nutty, pecan nuts, peanuts, cashews, dried fruits like fig, date and raisins, leather polish, some eastern spices (cumin, curcumin), overbrewed tea, also a syrupy cherry like sweetness, in the background there is a mild smokiness resembling smoked bacon or ham drenched in salty soy sauce.
    • Taste
      89 89
Sweet, both fruity and savory, butter and eastern spices, quite some black pepper, again dried figs and dates, also some oranges, almonds, pecan nuts and the subtle smokey meatiness from the nose. I would not recommend drinking this neat, but adding a small amount of water tuning down the spicy peppers somewhat.
    • Finish
      90 90
Long and warming: figs, red fruit juice and a mild liquorice with a lingering spicy oak wood pepperiness.

This bottle has been on my shelve for quite a while, oh the good days when Bruichladdichs where under the age *10 price. Bruichladdich never seems to disappoint me and from a sherry cask maturation in a puncheon this got to be good. I remember having this at a tasting when I was still a college student and it was the best whisky I ever had. Well times have changed. Is it still as good?
    • Nose
      91 91
Wow, this kept the Bruichladdich spirit even after such a long time in the sherry cask. With Bruichladdich I always get some breakfast porridge at the start this is then followed by an intense maple syrup note and some pancakes. This is then followed by sour cherries, blackberries, some nuts, black tea, some cinnamon and actually soy sauce with a nice salty note and a slight note of balsamico. If I dig deeper I also find some white chocolate and some kind of sunflower oil. The nose is an absolute pleasure and the 60+% is nowhere to be found. This is incredibly complex.

With water: More balsamico more oak and more sunflower oil and it gets a bit saltier with water.
    • Taste

Fills the mouth immediately with dark berry jam and maple syrup, pancakes raisins figs, apricots, burnt sugar, some wood is there but it is dark bread and a little espresso and dark chocolate there is also some tobacco and leather hidden in here so are roasted almonds. This is absolutely mouthwatering.

Again super sweet but the porridge is now at the forefront. This reminds me of the pancakes my girlfriend makes with maple syrup and sherried cherries, there are some notes of tobacco and leather here as well and these notes are then followed by salted sweetened espresso and even more tobacco. It gives and gives and gives and it just does not stop. Sherries are now there with more dark fruits and caramelized berries there is also a mix of sweet and salty popcorn. Oyster juice comes to the forefront, and some seaweed. And then back again to the dark berries.

    From WF:

    Bruichladdich 16 yo 2002/2018 (61.2%, Claxton’s, sherry puncheon, cask # 1853-651, 372 bottles) Four stars and a half
Colour: deep gold. Nose: some rounded, rather PX-y sherry, not stuffy at this point, rather on those ripe mirabelles that we like so much, and with just a touch of chalk and aspirin. Forgot to mention sultanas. With water: elderberries, chamomile, rosehip oil, patchouli. That’s perfectly unusual in Bruichladdich, and perfectly awesome. Mouth (neat): rich, very honeyed, and with big notes of Sauternes, or rather Monbazillac, with even touches of botrytis (smoky mushroomy ashes or something). And this funny medicinal side again. With water: ah perfect, this time the wine and the spirit would just tango to perfection. Cakes, jams, and yet no stuffiness. Finish: rather long, with the usual greener aftertaste. Green tea, lees… Comments: hard to beat. Ten more years and presto, up there with the very best.

A really nice malt from an active sherry puncheon. Not overloaded with sherry like some modern season cask maturations. In addition, a balanced seasoning and the very well integrated alcohol. Perfect enjoyment.

Raisins, walnuts, stove, dark jam, charcoal, old sails, forest honey. Everything very compact and strongly interwoven.
    • Taste
      89 89
Lively and fruity, red apples, strawberries, grapefruit, ginger, Robby Bubble, dry wood. The force with which this whisky pushes here is impressive.
    • Finish
      88 88
Spices, oak and sawdust, nuts, wild berries.

A very strong whisky with a long finish. No culinary delights with ambitions to everybodys darling. The is very edgy and the aromas are more on the hearty side, on some days it even looks smoky and impetuous. A whisky for special days. Also a matching whisky to experiment with water - 21.06.2019
    • Nose
Very intense Sherrynote, the alcohol is very strong, peanuts, after a while the Sherry drifts towards soy sauce and maggi, balsamico, dried plum, dried tomato, fig, date, caramel, brandy bean

With water, it is fruity and aromatic with ripe banana, raspberry, cherry candy, in the background remains the aromatic-spicy leather note
    • Taste
Sweet, astringent, incredibly strong and fiery, strong pepper, has really steam can not hold long in the mouth, the salivation is intense, on the palate it is increasingly hearty with dried fruit and roasted aromas, roasted almonds, to the end charred wood

With water sweeter and creamier but still powerful and finally a spicy intensity rolls over the flavors, at the end comes again a slight hint of peppermint
    • Finish
      Lang

    Great color, mahogany.

When I opened the sample fresh, still a slight plume of smoke, but that disappeared after some time.
Now smokeless in the glass, with intense sherry notes and woody aromas.
    Sweetish, strong, creamy.

Violent beginning, very strong in the mouth, but nice and warm feelings.
There's the oak, which shifts to the foreground,
followed by an interesting sweetness of sherry: a kind of gummy with vanilla sugar.

Like sucking on a piece of wood that was previously dipped in sherry ...

    Wow!
    That's a grenade!

What an amazing malt.. best of the last Claxton's bottling. Deep sherry notes with wood, not to sweet.. long finish. I felt in love.

Nose: Farmy, sweet sherry, butterscotch, caramel.
    Sweet and bitter on taste
I like the ligther sherry or bourbon style of bruichladdich better.
