I wish I knew what this cask was, it produced a very good whisky. It feels like it’s not just ex-Bourbon due to the fruit, but it could really be any kind of finish. I don’t think it has a strong enough influence to have spent it’s whole life in a wine/Sherry cask even though Ardbeg rarely does finishes. Depending on when the cask was bought, it could have been managed differently than the distillery does. This dram feels like a meal.
    • Nose
Smoke and fruit. Astringent. Vaguely sweet.
    • Taste
      Intensely smoky, savory flavor, heat.
    • Finish
Malt, pepper, peat. Medium-long, but residually long.

Mental Image: Sharing Sambuca with Nero
    • Nose
      88 88
Citrus and subtle malt come through with lemon molasses bundt cake and a rich coffee dark chocolate tiramisu. Notes of orange rind, shiso leaf, and dark espresso give the impression of a sambuca digestif. Chocolate notes turn toward chimney soot, tar, and saltwater in the background, though they never quite dent the overall sweetness on the nose.
    • Taste
      84 84
Medium-bodied with a nice oiliness and a bit of dryness on the end. Saltwater washes in driftwood, green peppercorns, and an herbal smoke. Citrus, licorice and star anise bring the palate around for another sambuca. On the back end sits roasted candied espresso beans and charred lemon peel.
    • Finish
      83 83
Lingering licorice, faint ash, and medicinal undertones.

On the nose, tropical fruits and peat are the most present. With water, vanilla, iodine and medicinal notes come out. Dried fruits and raisins are also ever-present.

On the palate, dirty sherry with rounded peat smoke. After water, notes of coconut and mango are emphasized. Iodine and medicinal quality are also brought, making the experience quite similar to Laphroaig 10 CS (difference being that the sherry influence in this is stronger). By giving this dram a while to breath, the smoke becomes more rounded and gentle.

The finish is long, dry with vanilla extract and medicinal notes.

I didn’t really want to start smoking so early, but sometimes you have to catch them when you can.

C: Excellent whisky, though arguably no better than the brilliant standard 10. Price-wise however, you’re looking at 10 times the cost.

    Scores a B+
