Whisky Reviews for Benrinnes 1997 SV

Since 1997, the Malt Maniacs (an international collective of malt whisky enthusiasts) have been enjoying and discussing the pleasures of (single malt) whisky with like-minded whisky lovers from all over the world. Since 2003, we have organised (non-stop) our very own annual ‘amateur’ whisky competition. We like to think that, over the years, our modest little initiative has evolved into one of the leading (and most independent) whisky competitions in the world. You can find more details about our collective and its history on:

Very nice, especially in the mouth and finish.
    • Nose
Nose sherry bomb a little cooked and dry.
      Walnuts, prune, currants, pineapple.
    • Taste
It's sweet and long. On red fruit, leather, dried fruits and pepper. We have wood, undergrowth and cigar.
    • Finish
The finish is long on fruit and leather.

Mature Benrinnes on sherry, often something very special.

And it indeed is a wonderful pick by LMDW. I have a Glengoyne 25 open at the moment and it has its similarities, so that's a huge accomplishment. Lots of sherry, that has to be to your liking. And it's a yes from me! Very pricey though, which actually turns it into a no from me when it comes to sourcing a bottle. Good stuff though.

    Based on a sample.
    • Nose
Not unique in profile but executed so well. Nutty, meaty and medium sweet sherry, the tone is set. Orange zest, dried apricot, raisin, blueberry, fig, overripe banana, dark chocolate, caramel popcorn, winegum, sultana, honeycomb, muesli, almond, leather, balsamic vinegar and beef broth. Absolutely flawless nose. On par with a Glengoyne 25 for example and maybe even better. I had to urge myself to take a sip..
    • Taste
A good attack, not too spicy. Very sherried again but that's expected. Just look at the colour alone. Apricot, blood orange, pineapple juice, raisin, citrus, dark chocolate, Seville orange marmalade, salted caramel, cinnamon, clove, balsamic vinegar, a little oak and pepper.
A little acidic, although it keeps the sweetness nice in place. Seriously good although I couldn't recognize the Benrinnes DNA in this one.
    • Finish
Wonderfully long on dark chocolate, cookie dough, nutmeg
      and a little salt.
