After coming home from Mortlach GM, it was important for me to get one here. With Mortlach I have never really gotten warm until about 2 weeks ago I had tried a 22 year old from XOP. He was wonderful! This one, however, goes one better. Although not a first fill Oloroso Butt, but that does not spoil the taste experience. This malt here is not as brutally over-sherried as some 1993 Glendronachs. Rather, I find it a bit "finer", so that the other flavors like the dark chocolate come out better. A great Mortlach, but it has its price. The well over 500 euros are already a house number. Everyone has to decide for themselves if he can afford such a bottle. From me there are 93 points today :)
    • Nose
Sherry Sherry Sherry !! Deep, dark notes! Black cherries, blackberries, raisins, raspberries, cigar boxes, espresso, dark cocoa with at least 70%. Very well balanced. Neither sweetness nor spice dominate. The alcohol is very well integrated with its 51.7% and absolutely not intrusive. I like it very much. Is comparable in some ways to the 1989 Glenfarclas Family Cask 13055 (the best whisky for me so far in 2018)
    • Taste
Very pleasant and creamy is the Mortlach on the tongue. The alcohol is very pleasant and nothing is burning. Immediately, the sweetness spreads in the mouth, followed by the pleasant bittersweetness. Coffee, espresso, cocoa, a very light pepperiness in combination with a hint of nutmeg. The Nosing continues actually very well in the mouth. Only that everything is a bit more intense now. Intense, through-the-nose breathing with a little bit of Mortlach in the mouth adds a hint of mint, which adds another level of complexity. Very nice!
    • Finish
It dominates in the beginning, in any case, the sweetness. It makes a very pleasant mouth feeling wide. The salivation is still present. It runs down the cheeks, so jolt back again are 2cl in the mouth;) Slowly, very slowly joined to sweetness now the slight bitterness of the oak. Not the cigar box, but the 70% chocolate again. The fruitiness gives way slowly and it leaves a wonderful mouthfeel, with which one prefers to sleep without brushing his teeth :)

Expectations are high. A aged sherried Mortlach.
    - A fine well aged nose and a not so well working palate. +500€ I will pass - I would rather spend 200€ on a fine cigar malt from Chieftains..
    • Nose
      90 90
First a lot of oranges. Behind the first blast of orange a gentle fruity sherry. Red berries like raspberries, almost grenedine like. After some time the sherry becomes more intense. Not that complex but a well aged refill sherry nose.
    • Taste
      85 85
Oh what happened here? Overripe oranges, a hint of sulphur and burnt wood. After a rather laidback but engaging nose this came as a surprise. Thankfully it recovers a bit with creaminess, pine-needles, light sherry.
    • Finish
      88 88
Now a more bitter blood orange. A hint of leather and dark chocolate. Medium long - it lingers and is pleasant but nothing that will blow your mind.

    fair puddle

Wow, the expectations were high and I was surprised in a positive sense
a hammer painter, sherry, wood full, hard on the edge he is not over. That surprised me. I thought there was a board but he was gentler
    He does not need water
    • Nose
dark, sherry !!, raisins, sweetness, slightly chemically (so glue), old wood (slightly musty), fat red berry (currant and breadberry), slightly fermented fruit
later Grannysmith, dark cherry, Haribo Coke bottle
      with water: no change
    • Taste
oily and powerful on the palate
fat sherry !!!, oak becomes more, spicy, bitter, coffee / espresso, dark chocolate so 80%
      later more oak
with water: sweeter, fruit red and dark, sand?
    • Finish
      long
Sherry, bitter, musty cellar, old stacks of wood, dry
      with water: this sand note

Having a bottle of this in my basement, I was able to try it as a sample from a dear friend.

It is hella good, but damn, that price point.
"Sadly" I had better Mortlachs (22y, 25 und 27 from Chieftains - not cigar malts, the ones with distillery on it) for a way better price point.

Will we get more Chieftains? No, I don't think we will.
This is a worthy successor for a very unreasonable price.

Nose: sour mortlach notes with quite a lot sherry for a refill but not overwhelmingly much (Secret Speyside 14 anyone?)
Mouth: cant quite make everything out of it, maybe mon cherie with alot of punch and some bitter notes at the end
Finish: medium long, tends to the more dry and bitter end and does not coat your tounge alot with that desired sherry notes.

To the collectors: open a bottle up like this, it's good.
(add 1-2 points to my 90 if you do not care about money)

Little bit shy on the nose but really good on the palate and in the finish - very good
    • Nose
      89 89
Nutty, old wooden cabinet, little dried fruits, dates, tobacco, little earthy, raisins, spices, little herbs, little sherry wood, whiffs of smoke - little reluctant but not bad
    • Taste
      92 92
Very creamy, good sweetness, little liquorice, dried fruits, brown sugar, molasses, more tobacco, raisins, little acacia honey, toffee, cooked oranges, jam, hints of ham and bacon, shery wood, spices - very good
    • Finish
      91 91
Medium long, warm, woody, spicy, still sweet, now hints of fine leathery notes, more punchy

  8. Calmar scored this whisky 93 points Connoisseur

High-quality age-old whisky, a wide palette of derivatives, rich in shades and half tones, deep and complex, a profile slightly different from sherry standards, with bright, refreshing notes, aroma and taste are highly saturated, the finish, on the contrary, in contrast to them, is light and invigorating.
    • Nose
Discreet, moist, slightly burnt berry jam, earthy notes, old furniture, furniture varnish, prunes, dark raisins, dark chocolate, a little rum, Christmas cake, caramel, creamy sweet motifs, fondant, boiled condensed milk, dried mushrooms, pipe tobacco, old leather goods.
    • Taste
Dense, rich, sweet berry, burnt jam, burnt wood, prunes, furniture varnish, pu-erh, burnt caramel, thick dark beer, something like a Belgian quadrupel, sweet creamy caramel shades, ginger, Montpensier candies, raisins, cola.
    • Finish
Light, refreshing, cola, exploding candies, a little varnish and old oak, raisins, kvass.

  9. vlad78 scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

A good sample of sherry whisky.
    • Nose
Warm, the aroma of candied plum jam, soft dark raisins, burnt sugar, dried leaves, cloves.
    • Taste
Bright, burning, sweet, even a little cloying taste of jam from dark berries.
    • Finish
The aftertaste is sweet, plum-like, and long-lasting.

  10. prz22 scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

Really solid sherried dram, maybe without great complexity but still with decent build and nice flavours
    • Nose
      90 90
Good amount of fruits, chocolate and herbs
    • Taste
      90 90
Typical modern fruity woody sherry influence with quite nice sour twist.
    • Finish
      91 91
Long, very nice sweetness and warmth.
