Whisky Reviews for Port Ellen 1982 SV

    Subtle & Flabbergasting

On December 7th I joined a tremendous Signatory 30th Anniversary Tasting. I drove two hours, but who wouldn’t for this kind of tasting? The last whisky in the line-up was this 35 years old Port Ellen. I had been a while since I last tasted a Port Ellen and did not want to miss this opportunity.

Delicious nose on sweet, smoky malt, chalk and jute, fish oil, white fruit and some seaweeds, but subtly upholstered with sweet fruit like apricots and peach. Some flint. Wet rocks, a sea breeze and smoldering wood. I am in seventh heaven already.

Suprisingly subtle but top notch Port Ellen with gravel, citrus, sea shells on the beach, olive oil and a drop of balsamico. Very herbal and mineral. Machine oil, white grapefruit, oak. Wake me up, I must be dreaming.

The finish is very long with a minerality I haven’t experienced in quite a while. Stunning, as they say.

Subtle but flabbergastingly good Port Ellen. Sure, 1900 EUR is a lot of money. No bottle of whisky could ever be worth this, could it? That would mean my glas of 2cl would be about 57 EUR. Well, it’s the best money I spent all year! Ordered me a bottle to put under the Christmas tree. Yolo!

A very nice Intense, complex and peaty Port Ellen, with nice maritime and tarry flavours. The peat is surprisingly intense for such an aged Port Ellen.

N: This is not your archetypal Port Ellen, but it’s certainly an Islay through & through. With it’s natural smoked barley profile & herbal shortbread notes, let’s say it’s rather more [Bruichladdich]< Kilchoman-esque with a splash of Laphroaig. Maybe Kilchoman will become more Port Ellen-esque as the decades roll on? Let’s hope so.
T: This is strong/firm juice with an arrival of many oils and some herbal tinctures. Subsequent chewing leads to a super development on more tinctures & garage oils. I’d never have guessed this was from a sherry butt.
F: There’s some minerality, but we’re mainly talking of a petroleum oil slick with a coastal touch and a pinch of salt, finishing more medicinal at the death.
C: One that didn’t wow me as much as other PE’s have done in the past, but really lovely stuff nevertheless.

    Scores an A-
