[October, 2018] I had a dram during the Cadenhead warehouse tasting at Campbeltown.

When I visited the Strathmill distillery during a guided tour I spotted a small sign behind the stills that said "We want a grassy and floral profile" and exactly this is the usual Strathmill style. A malt that is used as a base malt in many blends which adds substance (oiliness) without pre-determination of the desired flavours profile that later the blender creates using other signature malts on top of the base blend...

...and exactly this is what this Strathmill is all about. A fine but not overly complex malt on mainly grassy, floral and barley sugary sweet flavours with minor drying moments from the wood (tannins). Nothing special or interesting about it...

The colour is pale straw and the nose offers a grassy and autumn floral profile with mashy-sugary notes. Quite simple and not very impressive - exactly what the blenders prefer as a base malt...
    • Taste

The taste is barley sugary sweet with some fine nutty and (white) chocolatey flavours. Actually not too bad, later the grassy and floral flavours join in but some heavier bitter tannins too. It is nicely chewable but again not really impressive because it lacks both the depth and complexity one expects from a 25 years old dram.
    • Finish
      85 85
The dram arrives warming and coating in the mouth with no distracting feelings. The finish is of medium length and more spicy (white peppers) and bitter (tannins) than the taste. It gets a little drying from the woods towards the end. Water turns both the nose and taste more grassy and it releases some more tasty chocolatey flavours. I like this dram best when a little reduced to about 46% abv.

N: This lightly toasted & honeyed > citric barley juice makes for a fine sighter.
T: Mildly-sweet, lemon barley juice to taste.
F: Decent length, clean & true on honeyed lemon - a touch sour - and bitter-sour herbs with water, though the lime-citrus cereal notes continue to move through.
C: A decent natural/distillate-led leveller, albeit a rather austere one.

    Scores a C+
