Whisky Reviews for Blair Athol 2000 Arc

14 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 86.37 points

    Sample courtesy of WB.
A shy nose that doesn't reveal much of the very tasty body.
Cask influence is minimal for an 18YO, leaving a lot to be carried by the destillate.
A few drops of water doesn't hurt this one.

I feel there's a lot of the distillery profile coming through here.
Also quite light in colour, so I suspect this has not been a first fill cask.
      Fruity, grassy, citric.
      Melon, grapes, unripe peach.
Oaky tannins and a little prickly alc fume.
A little water makes the alc fume more acceptable.
Sweeter, less citric, more grassy and the fruit turns more yellow plum/pear.

A lot more going on here than on the nose.
Oily with a rapid build up of peppery wood spice.
Still some fruity sweetness manageing to push through.
A little water reduces the spice considerably.
Wood notes seem to turn into leather.

      Fatty nuts. Walnuts?
Drying, with a good amount of peppery spice lingering.
Still fairly long with a few drops of water. Not as dry and spice is reduced. I think it gets a very nice sweet liqorice note.

This was a sample courtesy of WB. I agree with Peatbogger, that this doesn't feel like a first fill.

This is different, it smells like a flower I know but not sure what it is, Lilly maybe. Apricots, vanilla extract, white carnation flower, that's it. It's a light delicate nose with some light fruit cocktail. Quite pleasant. With a few drops of water the nose was weaker.
    • Taste
      82 82
First sip neat and the alcohol burn is just to overpowering so I'm going to add a few drops of water. Four to be precise and it is now very palatable. There are no really strong flavours, it's just light and fruity with a punch if that makes any sense.
    • Finish
      75 75
The burn does return slightly on the finish even with water and there is some dryness there as well. Not a great finish, short to middle.

This whisky clearly needs some time to open up. Then its gets more and more powerful in nose and taste. A lot of sweet and fruity notes, very pleasant.

Fruity, citrus, apples. Surprisingly litte alcohol bite. Only later on it opens itself, malty. Some clear floral notes now as well.
    • Taste
      88 88
Pretty strong, pickering. Fruity and sweet. Orange, malty. Full taste, honey. Gets stronger in time, with peach as well then.
    • Finish
      88 88
Still pretty strong, pickering. Sweet notes, honey, some peach, long finish. Again some peach too, drying mouthfeel.

Pretty restrained start. For an 18-year-old drop, the subtlety and structure is a bit simplistic ...

  9. z-imaging scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Nose is quite fresh even youngish - lemony/citric, fresh cut green apples, fresh oak. Taste is more pleasant and feels more mature but water & breathing are mandatory. Medium to long finish, spicy & peppery, light oak & sweetness.

  10. dram-drinker scored this whisky 81 points Moderator

Tastes young and pretty unmature - not far away from a new spirit which is a pity given the 18 years
    • Nose
      82 82
Intense, white grapes, white wineish notes, honeydew, little citric
    • Taste
      81 81
Very punchy, oily, little fruity, subtle sweetness, almonds, grapes again, oak wood, pepper, ginger
    • Finish
      80 80
      Long, burning, grapefruits, water recommended
